Barred Owl, Dinner Island Ranch WMA, Clewiston, FL

It's almost impossible to go to Dinner Island an not shoot the local owls. The light was terrible and as everyone knows I don't use flash, so most of my shots didn't turn out too well. But I quite like this one and hope you like it too. :-)

Happy Hump Day!

This is a picture of an owl found in Hocking Hills, Ohio. His eyes seem to pierce right through me. I wish I could say that I hiked all night through the woods, sat patiently in this spot and once the bird flew up I got this image, but the truth is he lives in an animal preserve. I am glad their are people who are dedicated to saving these beautiful birds.

Biography: Ozeline Pearson Wise was the first Black woman to be employed in the banking department of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She grew up in Michigan and Massachusetts, graduating from high school in Cambridge, Mass. With the death of her father before she began college, she sought employment in the postal service. Despite a high score on the civil service examination, she was not hired and began to work at various clerical jobs. During World War II, she worked for the U.S. Navy in both ship fittings and personnel. She was then employed for 20 years by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In 1963, after the death of her husband, John Wise, she went to live in Cambridge with her sister, Satyra Bennett. Very active in St. Paul A.M.E. Church, which her father, the Rev. William B. Pearson, had pastored, she was trustee, Sunday School teacher, and chair of the building fund. Cofounder with her sister, and a charter member of the Citizens' Charitable Health Association, she also worked with Mrs. Bennett in other community organizations. Her contributions to her church were recognized in 1969 and again in 1978.

"And oh when I'm old and wise

BItter words mean little to me

Autumn winds will blow right through me

And someday in the mist of time

When they asked me if I knew you

I'd smile and say you were a friend of mine

And the sadness would be lifted from my eyes

Oh when I'm old and wise"

(EXPLORE) Back to the Parrot Refuge in Coombs, B.C. for today's post......this older fellow was one of the first to greet me and had loads of personality. You can see he's looking a little worn around the edges but you barely noticed that with his sunny disposition.

I hope the response from Black Day Sunday opened some eyes and ears at flickr.....I think many of the old & wise members voiced their concerns very well. This site should not cater to just the new and young "followers", this is a community for all ages.

#2 “Living Our Dream”

these were unfortunately not taken in the wild – iv still had absolutely no luck with owls!

these are taken at the yorkshire animal park and what really surprised me about watching them with their handlers was how much of their personalities shone through, this cheeky little fella kept stopping off in the crowd, and the and when they flew the hobby he buggered off and came back when the crowds had gone!

hope everyone is staying safe!

The Big Hoot has brought businesses, artists, schools and the local community together to create a public art trail of stunning owl sculptures on display across Birmingham from 20 July until 27 September.

All the giant owls have been sponsored by companies and organisations and at the end of the trail, they will be auctioned to raise money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

This owl looks like he has the wisdom of centuries. He was actually a bit outraged that we were close - he kept showing us his tongue! He was gracious enough to pose for this shot though.

Wise Old Owls.

A wise old owl lived in an oak

The more he saw the less he spoke

The less he spoke the more he heard.

Why can't we all be like that wise old bird?

English Language Nursery Rhyme

Owls are birds from the order Strigiformes, which includes about 200 species of mostly solitary and nocturnal birds of prey typified by an upright stance, a large, broad head, binocular vision, binaural hearing and feathers adapted for silent flight. Exceptions include the diurnal northern hawk-owl and the gregarious burrowing owl.

If you meet a nice young lady always have a bunch of red carnations with you....and put your pants on.

There are 100 of these cast iron men dotted along the beach. some have banacles clinging to them. Some have shiny appendages from regular fondling. Thankfully a daily wash from the tide stops them getting sticky.

The sculptor, Antony Gormley, says he modelled them on himself. Yeah , right.

The sand started to drift and created a nice effect......

So much for brining the peanut bar in at night... Boonie is now showing up at sunset. He almost makes me feel bad - okay, I DO feel bad - that he has to stand on tip toes to make his raid. :)

charming wise guy .

looks at the bleu sky

This was the first time I've ever seen a owl close up. It kept turning his head and the handler explained how they do that to see around them. He helped by turning his arm quickly so I could get both eyes in the shot.

Sorry for the lack of photos on my stream. The new year has kept me busy. Seems I have had little time for myself and even less for my camera. Hopefully this will soon change...

Much better on black. Push the button...you know you want to. :)
