Oltre la Barriera è il termine generico col quale si indicano le terre situate nell’estremo Nord del Continente Occidentale, ovvero la sterminata area che si estende al di là della Barriera e che è patria del Popolo Libero.
I territori oltre la Barriera sono in gran parte inesplorati e, dunque, incontaminati e selvaggi.
Il clima della zona è gelido e pungente, specialmente nel punto più a nord delle Terre dell'Eterno Inverno.
In prossimità della Barriera, ha inizio l’area che comprende la Foresta Stregata, una vasta taiga che si estende dal confine coi Sette Regni sino alla regione che prende il nome di Thenn.
Non vi sono strade oltre la Barriera, ma solo numerosi sentieri e guadi che costituiscono le cosiddette "strade del ranger", impiegate sia dai Guardiani della Notte nelle loro escursioni che dal Popolo Libero.
La Foresta Stregata ricopre tutta la costa orientale, interrompendosi ad ovest nel punto in cui sorge la catena montuosa degli Artigli del Gelo. Le montagne, assai inospitali, si estendono indefinitamente verso nord.
Degni di nota sono la Scala del Gigante e il Passo Skirling.
Il Fiumelatte, l’ampio fiume che scorre al di là della Barriera, nasce dagli Artigli del Gelo.
Si dice che la parte più settentrionale degli Artigli del Gelo presenti valli nascoste occupate da vulcani.
Si tratterebbe dell’area più ospitale oltre il confine della Barriera, quella abitata dal Popolo Libero.
A sud-est degli Artigli del Gelo, tra le montagne e la Baia di Ghiaccio, si allunga una stretta striscia di terra conosciuta come Costa Congelata. Essa è attraversata, nella parte orientale, dal Fiume dei Cervi, un corso d’acqua che si getta nel Mare dei Brividi. La regione collocata nel punto più a est è una penisola ricoperta di foreste, il Promontorio di Storrold. Qui, si trovano le rovine dell’unica città eretta dal Popolo Libero: Aspra Dimora.
Oltre le suddette località, nel cuore dell’estremo Nord, si trovano le Terre dell'Eterno Inverno, una sconfinata regione polare tuttora inesplorata che si estende a partire dal limitare della Foresta Stregata.
Si racconta che gli Estranei provengano proprio da questi luoghi desolati.

Forgot about these photos - taken this past Fall while home - for a change. Amazing frost that covered everything, killing most of the flowers and vegetables in the garden. Sad but beautiful!
The sunset reflects in the outlet of Yellowstone Lake on a beautiful October evening in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. This photo was taken looking south toward the lake from the Fishing Bridge at the western terminus of the East Entrance Road.
I'm a Summer person myself but bare trees do pique my interest and make great photos.

Almost overnight it seems we've shifted into Winter ... with cold temperatures, driving rain and strong winds. The good news is that maybe we will finally get enough rain to end this darn drought - but I was hoping for a little bit of Autumn first!! (And I had intended/hoped to post a lovely Autumn foliage image for this theme ... but lockdown put an end to that due to the travel required to capture such an image.)
Stay well, stay safe, stay home and stay sane everyone.
Frost on the tree branches, especially birch, is so nice. The branches are covered in white icy needles.

I made two different images for the "Skaði contest" and had a very hard time choosing which one to participate with, because I thought you were only allowed to compete with one picture.
The contest is closed, but I want to show the second picture anyway. This is Öndurdís (also known as Skaði) - a jötunn and norse goddess associated with bowhunting, skiing, winter, and mountains. She always carries her bow even when she is resting.
