A quiet winter forest covered in fresh snow.

Fog softens the distance and creates layers of depth between the trees.

A peaceful, cinematic atmosphere captured during a cold and silent morning.

Two stylized foxes are depicted wandering through a forest of tall, slender birch trees. The composition uses a vibrant colour palette, featuring orange and red tones contrasted against a dark background.

“Noted authors, similarly, have responded to the artistic potential of photography:

...it does seem to me that Capa has proved beyond all doubt that the camera need not be a cold mechanical device. Like the pen, it is as good as the man who uses it. It can be the extension of mind and heart...”

Story about this Landscape Winter Photography

...in the forest...

Germany, NRW, Sauerland

Sika-Deer does in the misty highland forest at the end of November - Yatsugatake Highlands, Nagano

Two foxes stand nose-to-nose on a snowy landscape, surrounded by a forest of tall, bare trees. Snowflakes gently fall from a clear, blue sky, creating a peaceful winter scene.

A small white house sits enveloped in a snowy forest, with tall dark trees casting shadows over the scene. Rays of moonlight peek through, adding a surreal and dreamlike touch.

Using the Novar triplet lens with the aperture rather wide open (within the range f/3.5 to f/5.6) results in a distinct softening, which adds to the softening from the limited depth of field. Also, the Ilford HP5 film helps, because this film is less contrasty than for example its counterpart Kodak Tri-X.

Although I enjoy the fine detail of the stopped down Novars or Tessars, distinct sharpness is not essential for many photos and therefore is not a must for me. Lower sharpness and contrast make photos more pictorial or painterly. In this case the softness underlines the dim and low contrast winter light.

I always loved this scene with its mysterious light, great sense of depth and beauty. I captured it on film on a mountain trip between Christmas and New Years Eve in 1997 (with the Nikon FE-2). I have already posted a BW version earlier and I think I like that version even better. But, I figured this color version could be a nice end of the year "post card" photo for 2010. The photo itself is not so spectacular but the scene is of course very special with the light breaking through the fog behind the snowed down trees.

It has been a very busy year for me and I have not posted many photos on Flickr. I hope to improve this in 2011. Most of my time at Flick I devote as one of the admins of the group PPro - thoughtful meeting place to share images, get honest critique, and build a knowledge. Another reason for the lack of photos in 2010 has also been that my key projects in 2010 have been of a very personal nature. I have turned to photographing people (trying to lift the family photo to a higher level). It has been a very rewarding experience and I have been shooting most of my stuff with the 50mm f/1.4 and the 35mm f/1.8. Lately I have been enjoying the superb ISO performance of the new D7000 body and shooting people and places in very low light conditions. I have also been working on and completed two family book projects.

I thank you all for your interest in my photography. In spite of my 2010 absence as an active Flickr poster and commenter I hope we can stay in touch also in 2011. I wish you all happy holidays, Merry Christmas and a really happy New Year!

..winter forest - first snow on branches, very noticeable on the skinny spruce

Winter Woods Blacktop Path - Canon AE-1, Canon FD 7.5mm f/5.6 Fisheye lens, Ilford HP5 Plus.

I took this photo on a wintry and cold late afternoon. The low sun bathed the winter forest and the many branches in a soft and warm light, while the stream quietly rippled along. A moment that inspired me, and one I’d love to share with you.

What a difference snow makes!

Better Large- Pennyrile Forest runs from the Lakes of Kentucky, southwest to northeast heading across the state to Indiana.Traveling this road many times we would never expect the winter beauty we witnessed with the diamond trees and reflective ocean of frozen snow on the open fields. It would've taken days to stop and photograph the varieties of wonder. 0008

Remember This (James Watkins)

Remember this-

cold December's morning-

(beauty- without warming-)

cold reflective stream.

Remember this-

violent red waiting,

day-glow by the window,

silent-

evergreen.

The sun steps up to

start its daily song,

As quietness inside says,

take one step-

alone.

Build your golden dreams-

on visions,

tarried long-

wronged by waiting hours-

long-lived, doubt delayed.

Join the journey homeward,

turn back to yesterday.

Take one step- face tomorrow-

look it in the eye-

take it on.

Forever waits at daybreak,

shines suddenly like the dawn.

Memories rise from roads never taken.

Faces from forgotten pasts,

dare to dream the dream

and not be shaken,

dare to touch the fire at last.

Heart speaks to heart,

spirit to spirit,

stand strong faced

to meet the day-

we will walk,

in paths less taken-

secret signs

to guide the way.

Hope hung highways,

misted mountains-

running dry,

bereft of snow.

We will fly

in unknown places,

we will burn

and not grow cold.

Golden sunrise,

brazen morning,

dancing darkness,

falling free-

singing high

with hidden voices-

waking worlds

where shadows flee.

Lengthening light,

long remember,

one who comes

will rule by day!

Come fallen fliers-

torn asunder-

come and rest,

from restless waves.

Sleep your peaceful sleep

you souls arrested,

bright blue morning-

birds ablaze-

strike out new,

to touch the heavens-

stand strong now,

you heavy hearts-

amazed.

At a crossroads, the world opens up. One path leads to the left, one path leads to the right. The options seem clear, but the choice is rarely easy. Left - perhaps the familiar? Right - perhaps the expected? I could go neither left nor right, but straight through, over the tree trunks and through the thicket that is not accessible by any path. Or I could stop, linger and simply let the paths be paths. The decision not to go is just as much a choice as any other. And there are even more options.

A cozy house with a lit window stands amid a snowy landscape, surrounded by tall birch trees. Snowflakes gently fall from the dark, star-speckled sky, and a winding path leads to the house.

Strings of fairy lights in vibrant colours contrast against a monochromatic forest. Silhouetted birds fly across the scene, adding a dynamic element.
