Birds hanging around in my yard.

Birds hanging around in my yard.

Anais Nin

Anais was born in 1909, so it must have been difficult being as filled with passion and sensuality as she was in a time when there was such repression of such things..

But it's a good reminder that there is great passion in the hearts of ordinary people, and that it always has been so. Sadly, much of that is beaten out of us through the years, as we are taught to "behave" or to "act our age"... But your sweet little old grandma was once young, and probably - hopefully - still is, in her heart.

That housewife trudging through the grocery store with kids in tow? Her thoughts may also be filled with amorous adventures and passionate trysts.. In fact, I suspect that the greater the demands on her as a mother, the more she wishes to be lost in passionate abandon now and then..

But no. She is "all too rarely allowed to use her wings" - though she be a winged creature. Born to fly so high...

Here are a few more butterflies from Magic Wings in South Deerfield, Massachusetts.

On a recent trip to London I visited Kensal Green Cemetery, one of London's 'Magnificent Seven' suburban Victorian cemteries. It is indeed magnificent, and perhaps my favourtite so far (I've already visited Hampstead and Highgate... I guess I'll just have to visits the other 4 to complete the set now!)

All of these photographs were shot on a Fujifilm XE-1 with a variety of classic Olympus Pen F lenses (but mostly the 40mm f/1.4).

7/100x Walking with my Fuji X100V in 2022 We encountered this beautiful Great Blue Heron (or at least that is what I am told it was) perched between two frozen lakes as we walked through Homeland. It was motionless and I stealthily made my way in for the shot, using a fixed lens 35m camera. Then a pesky White Bichon Frise in a pink sweater stumbled into the scene and the Great Blue Heron sprang to life, and made a great escape.

#116 of 122 Pictures in 2022: "Winged Creatures"

For Bonnie the Duck Lover

After taking 350 photos of mute swans, this was the best shot of the day! Oh well, there's always another day.

Here are a few more butterflies from Magic Wings in South Deerfield, Massachusetts.

Not sure of the species, but this bird allowed me to get fairly close before going into a nearby tree.

This photo was taken on Kodak Portra 160 film (my favourite film!) using a Pentax *ist, fitted with a Pentax DA XS 40mm f2.8 lens. Now this is a Pentax DA lens, which means it is optimised for digital cameras with an APS-C sensor (specifically the Pentax K-01).

And in a purely technical sense it doesn't work that well on a full frame film body: there is some light vingetting, especially wide open, and the sharpness in the corners is pretty dreadful in the corners... but I really like the character this lens gives on a full frame film body... I'm guess that it would work nicely on the Pentax K-1 too.

Because it has no aperture ring it really needs to be used on a body that allow aperture to be controlled from the camera, and the *ist falls into this classification. Together they make a really tiny (almost pocketable!) combination with a really nice focal length.

A 40mm f2.8 lens might not scream 'bokeh!!', but on full frame you can actually get some lovely bokeh effects with this lens.

This is the Monastery of the Holy Transfiguration of God, near Veliko Turnovo in Bulgaria. It is no longer a working building, but the Bulgarians are working hard to restore and conserve this very beautiful complex of buildings.

The chapel, with it's amazing painted decorations both inside and out is of particular note.

This remarkable building is Kinneil House in Bo'ness, the ancient seat of the Dukes of Hammilton. The house itself is not normally open to the public, though the extensive grounds are. But several times each year a limited number of rooms in the 'palace wing' are openned so visitors can appreciate the remarkable renaissance wall painting.

Eurocentric and Pacific mythological creatures at the Ellerslie International Flower Show, Christchurch March 8, 2013 NZ.

The 2013 show – running from 6-10 March at Christchurch’s North Hagley Park – has attracted high-quality, world-class gardens from a selection of top international exhibitors along with New Zealand’s best gardeners and designers.

The international award-winning garden by design duo Kamo and Ellis has been adapted and will provide the stunning setting for Johnny Fraser-Allen’s The Gloaming exhibition, curated and presented by Sir Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger from Weta Workshop.

Fraser-Allen, a senior sculptor and conceptual designer at Weta Workshop, created the sculptures for the popular exhibition that ran in Wellington late last year. The sculptural portraits are based on Eurocentric and Pacific mythological creatures and will be located within the native bush garden.

“It’s exciting to be part of Ellerslie and quite a change for me. I already knew quite a lot about the show though as my mother and grandmother live in Christchurch and go along every year to check it out,” Fraser-Allen says.

one of the endpapers, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. The paper is pale green and I can't capture it properly.

Was lucky to have managed a shot like this - thats a fish that it's thrown up in the air and ready to swallow.

For those who are wondering what the diagonal green bands are - that's a coconut frond that was obstructing my view!

I named this little gal Orange Blossom. She is made of scrap book paper (glued onto a cereal box stock), painted with acrylic paints, glitter, and an adhesive butterfly stamp. While the arms and legs are movable, her wings have an added dimension with double stick mounting tape so her limbs can move freely. Although she looks great here, in real life she has a nice iridescent glitter making her more fabulous!

Chapel of the Souls in Purgatory in the Church of Saint-Sulpice, Paris, France - The Pièta is by Jean-Baptiste Auguste Clésinger from 1868, the frescos on each side are by François Joseph Heim from 1845 and the stained glass is by Lucien Léopold Lobin from 1869.

THE SECRET OF CASPAK

“The jungle valley of the lost continent of Caprona is a savage nest of giant reptiles, fierce cave-tigers, and subhuman ape-men – but at its heart lurks a species of monster so truly horrible that it can only be likened to Death itself.

“Into this fearful Jungle walks Bradley, with a troop of fellow-adventurers, intent on finding the lost aviator, Tom Billings. What they discover there is adventure almost beyond belief, as they find the secret of what truly comes.” [From the back cover]

“This is one of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ most exciting adventure novels . . . In CASPAK, the strange land where Time stood still, Burroughs made one of his most imaginative creations and wrote an unforgettable story of thrilling adventure.” – Lin Carter

10.06.2007: South Door, Abbey of Moissac: Christ on his throne surrounded by the eschatological creatures and the twenty-four elders of Revelation 4: 1-8:

At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian. A rainbow, resembling an emerald, encircled the throne. Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads... In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come."

June 21, 2019 - My wife and I went for a walk this evening. Soon after we left our apartment, this dragonfly was perched on a crepe myrtle. I believe this to be a great blue skimmer.

A new group of Vultures has taken over for the Turkey Vultures this week. These are a bit more aggressive, so I have to more careful with the dog.

West Point Pepperell's logo was a stylized mytholigical griffin, which had the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion. It's one of my favorite emblems.

When he was still young enough to be called 'young', Brook became really good at origami. A number of his items adorned the top of my computer monitors for many years.

However, handling, time, heat and light has seen them gradually fall apart... so, before this specimen becomes oral tradition, I thought I would commit it to camera.
