OK maybe tiny dragon buttons are probably not so terrifying .

As you know, I often photograph sunsets or interesting clouds from my balcony. This strange-looking mid-August cloud simply had to be photographed, don't you agree? It reminded me of a huge winged creature like a Phoenix or a dragon (or even Fawkes from Harry Potter).

But since Berlin is densely (over-)populated by city pigeons, it most likely was a "dragon pigeon", German: Drachentaube, Italian: Colomba dragonata. A dragon pigeon is a mythical, heraldic chimaera. Its head and body are that of a dove (depicted in white), while its legs, wings, and tail are that of a dragon (depicted in red). There also is a real-life pigeon breed called "Dragoon" which is the offspring of the once-extinct Horseman Pouter (which got revived). According to a German dove club website, Dragoons are of "bold appearance due to upright posture of body, neck, face, and beak, with a bright eye colour." Well, that describes this cloud phenomenon very well, doesn't it?

Happy Sliders Sunday, Everyone, and have a nice autumn or spring week ahead!

There’s something quite delightful when a butcherbird comes to serenade you at breakfast time! This is a young one.

Where do angels

fly in the firmament,

and how many can dance

on the head of a pin?

Well, I don't care

about that pin dance,

what I know is that

they rest, sometimes,

in the tops of the trees

and you can see them,

or almost see them,

or, anyway, think: what a

wonderful idea.

I have lost as you and

others have possibly lost a

beloved one,

and wonder, where are they now?

The trees, anyway, are

miraculous, full of

angels (ideas);even

empty they are a

good place to look, to put

the heart at rest--all those

leaves breathing the air, so

peaceful and diligent, and certainly

ready to be

the resting place of

strange, winged creatures

that we, in this world, have loved

I passed a man eating chips from a bag and immediately saw that a gull had also noticed him. Within seconds a crowd of seagulls were circling above the lamp post he stopped to stand under as he read details from a public map. He was totally oblivious to the hopefulness above him, but wasn't careless enough to drop any. These Norfolk gulls are obviously a lot politer than the ones on the south coast who would not wait for any to drop but would help themselves straight out of the bag.

The Walled Garden at the Untermyer Garden is a spectacular fantasy blending items from various ancient cultures. The 2 winged sphinxes on top of the cipolino marble columns are by the sculptor Paul Manship. His most famous work is the Prometheus at the Rockefeller Center Skating Rink.

Surprised me to see another Blue Jay that is balding. It might be that it's got mites. The one beside looks like it's starting to lose its feathers too.

Wet-Folded by a 25 x 25 cm square of Elefantenhaut and lightly brushed with white acrylic color.

Folded and designed by me.

I saw 3 females today...they were small and the wind made it a bit difficult to get a good shot. Hope they will return

It may be Movie Night, but Stormtrooper Bruce has been assigned a last-minute duty that may severely delay his plans. His only hope is the guys will understand and pitch in to help.

TK-432: Dude! I look forward to Movie Night all week long. There are times when it's the only thing that gets me through! So explain again why we are on the creepiest deck of this ship. And why am I holding this creepy bag of eyes?

STB: Guys! I'm sorry. Palpatine told me just a few hours ago to get the DSPZ ready for it's grand re-opening. The new critters will arrive next week, and he wants "an epic display" to welcome them!

TK-432: I just don't see it!

STB: The P said to set the stage that will get the rumors started, create curiosity, and peak everyone's interest.

TK-1110: But everyone is terrified of his petting zoo. What does he expect?

STB: His vision is Jurassic Park with a touch of carnage. He said to have fun with it! He even supplied some of the decorations.

TK-432: I still don't see it!

TK-1110: And what's this bottle of ketchup for?

STB: Blood splatter.

TK-1110: Dude! You're gonna need a bigger bottle. And, what part of petting does the P not understand? Carnage!? Really!?

STB; Don't know. Don't care! But the sooner we create an epic scene of carnage, and get rid of the graffiti, the sooner we can get back to my quarters and get our Movie Night started!

TK-432: Oh, I finally see what you're talking about.

STB: Helllooo! We got your lame joke the first time! Now get busy with that bag of eyes so we can finish up here. Otherwise, you'll see yourself on cleanup duty tonight.

Made a new friend today. A pretty little moth that I have no idea what it's called. It didn't take too much to ease him off the brick. It wasn't active at all, so I'm wondering if he's nocturnal. He didn't even mind the fill flash. What a moth! And Brooke (reluctantly) petted him. I'm trying not to teach her my phobias (although I'm ok with most critters).

Caught this stunning Black Redstart perched on a rooftop in Nazaré, Portugal. These little birds are a joy to watch with their distinctive red tails and melodious chirps. They are known to be common in rocky areas and coastal regions, making Nazaré the perfect spot to spot them in their natural habitat. #BlackRedstart #NazaréBirdwatching #PortugalBirds #BirdPhotography

This is a broad-tail hummingbird, at Cherry Creek State Park, Colorado. He's flashing his gorget as he takes off over a currant blossom.

I normally shoot hummingbirds at 1/3200-sec. or higher shutter speed, but I lowered the speed to shoot a blackbird, which is not near as fast. Suddenly, I saw this hummer land and grabbed this shot right as he took off. The slower shutter speed blurs his wings, while keeping his eye and body in focus. It's a nice effect, occasionally.

I intended to shoot at f/8 to get decent depth of field and accidentally landed on f/10, with no harm done.

[Dec. 2007] This past Wednesday, December 5th, we experienced some very strange fog in patches throughout the Bay Area. It wasn't the kind of fog we often have here -- i.e., the kind that clings to and creeps over the hills, pushing gusts of snarling wind...well, not in its wake, but in the opposite of its wake...(what *is* the opposite of wake...? fore...? pushing gusts of snarling wind in its fore...? hmmm).

Anyway. This was a very different kind of fog -- very still and quiet, without any real physical properties. It wasn't cold or wet, or even damp, and it wasn't accompanied by any wind/gusting sounds; it was a perfectly soundless fog. And, in some spots, a near-total whiteout. Horizon lines virtually disappeared; the distinctions between heaven and earth or water and air nearly vanished.

The effects were particularly mesmerizing on this little lagoon near Brisbane, where all kinds of water birds stop to rest or fish or do whatever it is that water birds do. In this shot is a heron (a great blue heron?), in flight, and a black & white duck with its head in the water...

look Mummy, there's a yellow thing up in the sky...

This is a male Say's Phoebe bringing a blue darter dragonfly to one of his lucky brood. This nest is on top of a column, at the entrance of a medical facility in Parker, Colorado. The male and female are constantly catching bugs on the fly and bringing them to the brood every one to three minutes.

During my time watching, a Cooper's hawk flew nearby, and no bird was in sight for five or six minutes after I lost sight of the hawk. Both the chicks and the adults are at risk. A few years back, I witnessed a Cooper's rob a robin chick from its nest.

ODC-Winged Creatures

Sweet birds but they aren't too bright. It was sitting right out in the sun like a sitting target for a Hawk. I took it's photo outside then chased it up into the Maple tree.

Wren's are very small, yet very loud with their songs. This one is preparing to nest in our hanging birdhouse, which is just outside our dining room window. I had to keep the blinds closed and poke the lens through them in order to capture this bird.

I looooooove religious art from all religions. I was in the garden of a Catholic church when I saw this cute statue of two cherubs/cherubim reading. It immediately reminded me of the cherubs that sit at the feet of the Virgin Mary in Rosso Fiorentino's 1518 painting "Madonna Enthroned with Four Saints."

When my wife and I were on vacation we stopped in at Magic Wings in South Deerfield, Massachusetts. There are hundreds of butterflies floating around, but they move so fast that it's hard to get some good shots. These are a couple of keepers.
