After getting many perch shots, she did a series of slow up and down wing flaps. This reminded me of when young birds of prey try their wings out. Luckily I had my zoom on to pull back for the entire wings to fit in the frame. More poses to come later :) Click image for larger view.
France; Coulonges (86) 19/10/21. After watching over several days it was still difficult to nail the male/female when not copulating.
This Burrowing Owl stuck out a wing and lifted it with his foot with an interesting look on his face. I believe she was showing the owlets her wings as if to tell them how to fly. I’ll post an image of the owlet’s response.

The adult male bird was sleeping whilst standing on one leg, and was suddenly awoken by the arrival of one of its juvenile birds!
Two pairs of these amazing leggy birds have successfully been breeding at RSPB Frampton Marsh { Lincolnshire, UK} during 2023 {where this photograph was taken}.
Teals are normally very skittish, but this one posed nicely before following her mate into the reeds.

A short wander through Royal Park today yielded some nice birds.
I have been looking for the Goshawks in the Park for some time. Another lifer ticked off.
Happy Wing Wednesday!
We were very interested in seeing a Rufous-winged Sparrow during our recent visit to Arizona. The southeast portion of the state is the only part of the US where this species occurs and thankfully, they are fairly common in that part of their range. This photo was taken just after sunset and I probably wouldn’t have even bothered to attempt a photo at such low light levels but the perch was just so nice I just had to make an attempt and I’m glad I did.

We haven't seen many of these so far this winter. I have been reading of more sightings recently. It would be great if we get a late winter irruption.

Reminds me of a joke from my youth: Mommy, mommy what's for dinner?
Mother: Shit and Potatoes
Youth: Aw no, not potatoes again!
A rare visitor to our area, Broad-winged Hawks winter in tropical forests of central America, then migrate to eastern North America, from the Gulf coast up to the boreal forest into central Canada. We were graced by this migrant's presence on a covid walk. Although Broad-winged hawks often travel in large groups during migration, this one was practicing social distancing. These hawks can travel up to 70 miles per day during migration.
"Well, she's walking through the clouds
With a circus mind that's running wild
Butterflies and Zebras
And Moonbeams and fairy tales
That's all she ever thinks about
Riding with the wind
When I'm sad, she comes to me
With a thousand smiles she gives to me free
It's alright, she says it's alright
Take anything you want from me
Anything
Fly on little wing"
