Damage caused by hurricane Irene in Brooklyn, New York

It is with great sadness that I write this as I have idea what the fate of the landmark Garden Cleaners neon sign will be...............Several 50mph wind gust's around midnite twsited this classic Flashtric Sign Company sign off its post and it came crashing down to the ground.

Mother called me this morning with the bad news and I rushed right over.

I spoke with somebody there who didn't know why the sign fell, but told them about the previous nights wind.

His insurance company was supposed to come and look at the sign. I asked him if he thought about having the sign fixed or restored and he wasn't sure.

I told the man the sign date's back close to 60 years. I pointed out many of the salvagable piece' s off the sign and told him of it being porcelain enamal finish.

Update: 3:30 pm The sign has been hauled away...

Power outages are the result of the wind coupled with stressed trees that still have their leaves. In stiff and gusty winds, that means trees can topple more easily and damage power equipment, and branches can take flight and hit power lines.

Yesterday's ferocious 50mph winds ruined our hike, knocked down our backyard canopy, tore shingles off our roof, and in general ruined the afternoon.

I get really irrationally upset when a shingle comes off the roof. It's one of the few things that really upsets me. I looked all over the yard but couldn't find it. We'll need a new roof in the next year or two I think. Another crazy season of springtime wind, and this one will be done.

Everyone likes disaster porn, right? Well, um...

Sorry, this is as close as we got. And it ain't even ours - it's our neighbor's.

Three trees fell around two homes, missing them all & taking out a few boards in a fence. Our personal damage: three sticks fell in our yard.

Anyone else with some good disaster pics?

Time to say goodbye to an old friend, the tree that graced our front yard and provided a home for squirrels.

78% of all toilet failures are caused by faulty supply lines, toilet flanges, fill valve assemblies or toilets that have backed up and overflowed. To be more precise, faulty supply lines, fill valves and toilet flanges (wax seals) accounted for a combined 45% of all toilet failures resulting in a claim. Keeping an eye on your toilet, dishwasher, washing machine and other items can help save you thousands if water damage occurs.

The high winds today knocked down the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse, in Washington, DC. The remnants were promptly fed into the wood chipper. It was a 42' tall Colorado blue spruce, and had been there since 1978.
