We all know the wind. These last lines of Gregory O’Brien’s poem will capture it for some:
And our rubbish tin which disappeared southwards five days ago
Returns, clattering, rolling in from the north-east*
Most of us just get used to it. A few never do. Back in 1840 a young army officer, Ensign William Best, wrote in his journal that "if it ever blew a gale & a half it is doing so at the present moment". The "violent squalls", he later complained, come "out of the gullies like a smith’s bellows." He was glad to leave "for the gales never cease".
Perhaps it was worse in old Wellington. Before sealed roads swirling dust clouds were a constant complaint, and early public transport could be rather exposed. After the big storm of 1904, for example, the Evening Post enjoyed reporting that seventeen hats were counted in a Beramphore paddock, blown off the open-topped morning trams.
The photograph is from one of those days in 1959, as a northerly blasts up Taranaki Street. This woman was probably waiting for the burly policeman on the other side of the road. Another photograph shows him struggling across the intersection with a windswept Wellingtonian hanging off each arm.

Windmolenpark "Amalia" op de Noordzee (uit de kust bij IJmuiden). Het was schitterend weer toen we uitvoeren op de DFDS ferry naar Newcastle, Engeland.
Ik ben absoluut geen fan van boten, maar dit was een prima overtocht en het eten aan boord was meer dan goed!

Wind turbines near Tehachapi. There has become so many of them that I have heard area residents complain about the vast number there.
This small wind turbine was recently added to the roof of the historic Frauenthal Theatre. Of course it only produces enough power for a fraction of the theaters needs but it was bought by the Community Foundation to promote a green downtown. There is supposed to be a display inside the building showing in real time how much electricity the turbine is producing.
I hope we see more of these appearing on downtown roofs.

The former location of the Wind Gap Hotel in Wind Gap, PA. Sadly it was torn down despite being a historic structure in the town. Hotel was run at one point by my ancestors.
