I have wanted to see Big Sur and drive Highway 1 for a long time now. When Jason and I were in San Francisco, I knew that was going to be my chance!

Big Sur was about a 3 hour drive south on Highway 1, but it was SO worth it. The highway would twist and turn through gorgeous panoramic mountain views, through heavily wooded Redwood trees, through farmland and the Pacific Coast. I think I wanted to pull over about every five minutes so I could get out and take pictures.

The picture above and the few below are a good example of how gorgeous it was that day!

I will upload more later from the trip. For now, I have a photo shoot at a gun range. :P

I should have a self portrait to add from there for today's post...I hope! I have never even TOUCHED a gun before, so this should be interesting.

BIBLICAL CONTEXT: Romans 9:14-29 NIV

(from biblegateway.com)

14 What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! 15 For he says to Moses,

“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,

and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”

16 It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. 17 For Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18 Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.

19 One of you will say to me: “Then why does God still blame us? For who is able to resist his will?” 20 But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’” 21 Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?

22 What if God, although choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath—prepared for destruction? 23 What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory— 24 even us, whom he also called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles? 25 As he says in Hosea:

“I will call them ‘my people’ who are not my people;

and I will call her ‘my loved one’ who is not my loved one,”

26 and,

“In the very place where it was said to them,

‘You are not my people,’

there they will be called ‘children of the living God.’”

27 Isaiah cries out concerning Israel:

“Though the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea,

only the remnant will be saved.

28 For the Lord will carry out

his sentence on earth with speed and finality.”

29 It is just as Isaiah said previously:

“Unless the Lord Almighty

had left us descendants,

we would have become like Sodom,

we would have been like Gomorrah.”

5 MORE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:

1. Like it or not, we are ALL sinners: As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous—not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.” (Romans 3:10-12 NLT)

2. The punishment for sin is death: When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. (Romans 5:12 NLT)

3. Jesus is our only hope: But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. (Romans 5:8 NLT) For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23 NLT)

4. SALVATION is by GRACE through FAITH in JESUS: God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (Ephesians 2:8-10 NLT)

5. Accept Jesus and receive eternal life: If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9 NLT) But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:12 NLT) And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life. (1 John 5:11-12 NLT)

Kristen is dead center of the comp....She screamed the ENTIRE time of this kiddie ride! She has been on scarier rides which makes this really funny....She is fearless! (Until the recent lighthouse trip). That's her dad in the car in front of her...asking her why she's screaming...?

I love the other expressions too...the kid in front - looks scared. The adult in the back holding tightly with 2 hands while the kid is free and happy!

Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. For,

“Whoever would love life

and see good days

must keep their tongue from evil

and their lips from deceitful speech.

They must turn from evil and do good;

they must seek peace and pursue it.

For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous

and his ears are attentive to their prayer,

but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats[b]; do not be frightened.” But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

A kittiwake takes care of her young while trying to hid them from lens and eyes. Near St.John's, NL.

One of the least visited national parks in the US because you can only get there by boat or seaplane. The fort was built in the civil war but only used to house criminals/ prisoners If I recall correctly, this is where John Wilkes Booth was sent after he shot Lincoln. A doctor there named Mudd saved many prisoners in a malaria outbreak including Booth and that's how the phrase, "Your name is Mudd" came about.

We wanted very badly to go to the Tortugas while we were in key West but all the National Parks were closed because the federal government was in a deadlock over the budget. Finally, on our last day there, they made an exception and allowed us and one other couple to go over to the Tortugas. We went there by seaplane, which was quite exciting. The flight was very close to the ocean and we could see manta rays and sea turtles - the windows on the plane were open.

Sadly, three weeks after we did this and were back home, we read in the newspaper that one of the seaplanes from this company crashed into the ocean and the pilot and a family were killed. I think about this to this day and feel very sad.

I had a really cool day yesterday (Jan 27, 2007) with my wife (pictured). We went on a long snowshoe hike up the West Side road, through the Longmire entrance of Mt. Rainier.

We went up to Dry Creek, which is where you normally park if you're hiking out of the WSR trailhead. We shared a freeze fried meal and a cup of tea, then headed back.

The park is closed due to damage from ferocious wind and rain storms. On Sundays, they let people hike in at 10am. It's better than nothing!

The news reported last week that the park likely won't be open until April, and that a complete circuit of the Wonderland Trail probably won't be possible.

As a side note: I felt there were beautiful tones for black and white; I took lots of photos. Making an interesting composition out of snow and trees proved to be incredibly difficult!

Along the Alapaha Trail inside the Wild Adventures theme park near Valdosta, Georgia. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, the park was fairly empty.
