Where seen? This large hairy beast is quite common in our wilder places but rarely seen as they are shy. It is more active in the early morning and late evening. Several may gather under fruiting trees to forage for fallen fruits.
It is the largest resident land mammal in Singapore and found in forest, scrubland and mangroves. According to Baker, it was believed to be extinct in Singapore, and current populations were probably started by individuals swimming in from Malaysia across the Johor Straits. They are found on Pulau Ubin, Pulau Tekong and the Western Catchment Area and also recorded in Changi, Lim Chu Kang and the Central Catchment Area. Globally, these wild boar are found from Europe, north Africa and most of Asia.
Features: Head and body 1.5-2m, up to 200kg. Typical pig-shaped covered with bristly hairs with a mane on the neck and back that bristles upright when the animal is threatened. Adults have long canine teeth (tusks) and are generally dark greyish brown. Wild boar males are generally solitary, but females and their young live in groups. They are shy and generally avoid humans. But they can be aggressive when cornered. Mothers can be particularly dangerous when protecting their young. Wild boar can run fast. They can swim too!
Boar babies: The female gives birth to a litter of up to 8 babies. She builds a nest of branches, leaves and grass to shelter her young. Infants are brown with white stripes along the body, resembling watermelons.
What does it eat? It eats mainly tubers, roots and fruits. It also snacks on small animals. It may dig for roots and worms, using its strong, flexible snout.

I was watching a Red-tailed Hawk finishing off the lower torso of a Round-tailed Ground Squirrel on top of a utility pole, when suddenly the male of the pair dropped in for a special visit. I was VERY close but both seemed oblivious to my presence. Quite a thrill!

While most of the African Wild Dogs where resting as my Safari vehicle passed by, this guy decided to sit up. The pack is made up of all brothers so his siblings just ignored him.

Travellers are sometimes surprised to find wild tulips in the Himalayas. Tulips are generally associated with
Holland and most people think that they originated there. Actually, it was only in the sixteenth century that bulbs
were taken from Turkey to Holland, where the flowers were adapted for the garden.
Tulips originated in the highlands of central Asia extending all the way down to the Himalayas. We have only one
wild variety that grows from Kashmir to Uttar Pradesh at a height of 1500-3300 m.
This beautiful flower is white with a broad pinkish stripe on the outer side of the elliptic petals. Each flower is
solitary on a hollow stem of 15-40 cm. At first the flowers are bell-shaped but later the petals open out. The leaves
are linear, about 15-20 cm long and of a grey-green colour.
Tulips grow in April and May in fields of young wheat. Whole hillsides are carpeted by them. Another form of the
same variety with yellow and red flowers grows at greater heights. The word tulip comes from the Persian,
‘tuliban’, or turban referring to the shape of the flowers.

Members of the Wild Titans rugby team at the Hong Kong Rugby Tens, 2011. Hong Kong Football Club, Happy Valley, Hong Kong. After snapping pictures of the games, I kept getting a lot of sort of generic action shots, so i started taking pictures of the players, who seemed more interesting. I figured I'd leave the action shots to the many sports photographers on duty that day.

A Kazakh nomad lasso's a wild mare in Western Mongolia
On one day each July, Kazakh nomads capture around a dozen wild mare's from the wild. They are broken the same day and then live with the nomad's throughout the brutal winter of the Altai Mountains. Each helping the other survive through to the spring in one of the worlds most remote locations.
Wild, wet & windy out at Damflask on my way home around 07.15 this morning.. Home safe now, had to dodge wheelie bins, flying branches, swirling leaves and the odd blown about cyclist too!!

I was really privileged to find these wild horses and, clearly, they didn't mind sharing their lives with me this fine afternoon. I'm not clear what the onlooker's motive was - moral support, learning experience or jealousy?? But I can tell you, this happened in almost a blink of an eye, less than 30 seconds from the time the stallion made clear his intentions to the grand finish.
It is said that the freight train to which between Higashi-Yokohama Station and Yokohama-Koh is connected was running to this Kisha-muchi(train way means).
If you walk on a track or an iron bridge, the feeling of little playing with toy trains can be experienced. Moreover, since a flower can also be seen in some grassy places, it is the optimal promenade for a walk.

この汽車道には、東横浜駅と横浜港駅の間を結ぶ貨物列車が走っていたそうです。線路や鉄橋の上を歩くと、ちょっとした電車ごっこの気分を味わえます。 また、いくつかの草地では花を見ることもできるので、散歩には最適な遊歩道です。
