Architekt: Eugen Schmohl

1925–1927

Burrowing Owl

The Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) is a small, long-legged owl found throughout open landscapes of North and South America. Burrowing owls can be found in grasslands, rangelands, agricultural areas, deserts, or any other open dry area with low vegetation. They nest and roost in burrows, such as those excavated by prairie dogs. Unlike most owls, burrowing owls are often active during the day, although they tend to avoid the midday heat. Like many other kinds of owls, though, burrowing owls do most of their hunting from dusk until dawn, when they can use their night vision and hearing to their advantage. Living in open grasslands as opposed to forests, the burrowing owl has developed longer legs that enable it to sprint, as well as fly, when hunting.

Burrowing owls have bright eyes; their beaks can be dark yellow or gray depending on the subspecies. They lack ear tufts and have a flattened facial disc. The owls have prominent white eyebrows and a white "chin" patch which they expand and display during certain behaviors, such as a bobbing of the head when agitated.

Mai als World Bee Day ausgerufen.

Daucus carota, whose common names include wild carrot, bird's nest, bishop's lace, and Queen Anne's lace (North America), is a white, flowering plant in the family Apiaceae, native to temperate regions of Europe and southwest Asia, and naturalized to North America and Australia.

D. carota was introduced and naturalized in North America, where it is often known as Queen Anne's lace. Both Anne, Queen of Great Britain, and her great grandmother, Anne of Denmark, are taken to be the Queen Anne for whom the plant is named. It is so called because the flower resembles lace, prominent in fine clothing of the day; the red flower in the center is thought to represent a blood droplet where Queen Anne pricked herself with a needle when she was making the lace.

Itter (Austria) '24

Schloss Itter

First mentioned 1241, rebuilt 1878

Schloss Itter is one of the more unique locations in Austria. This castle was where the Nazis stuffed the imprisoned leaders of France (both those from the Republic and the military dictatorship that overthrew them, which must have made for fun relations) during the final years of the war, the region being isolated from any possible Allied invasion route. By May 1945 Hitler is dead and all of Germany (apart from a narrow strip in Kiel) is under Allied occupation and the Americans were pushing deep into Austria. The Nazis (being Nazis) refused to accept defeat even when nothing else was possible and instead focused on murdering as many people as possible to demonstrate their fanatical commitment as an example for future generations. This posed pretty obvious dangers to the French prisoners as they no longer had any use as hostages and were obvious targets for vengeance squads.

When the SS commander at Itter shot himself the SS abandoned the castle and the prisoners were somewhat awkwardly liberated but decidedly not safe. One of them was able to reach the Americans while another made contact with the Austrian resistance, now flush with German deserters. This was the start of one of the most interesting battles in the war. The American armored units weren't authorized for a rescue, yet clearly needed to take some action amidst the confusion. So they teamed up with surrendering Wehrmacht soldiers(!) to lead a quick relief mission to protect the prisoners. The tank positioned itself at the front gate to protect them from SS counterattack, while the Germans and Americans (plus, perhaps unwisely, the VIPs themselves at their own insistence) successfully repelled repeated SS attempts to storm the castle. This is one of two battles during the war where German and American soldiers fought side to side. It's really weird and quite cool.

The castle itself is privately owned and, while some limited tours are permitted on occasion, it is generally not accessible to the public. The area surrounding the castle is filled with trees now, which makes even spotting the castle difficult except by air. Fortunately, I had a drone, so these are some of the few photos you will find of the castle.

The Queen Mary Hospital is the largest district general hospital located in Pok Fu Lam on Hong Kong Island of Hong Kong. It is part of the teaching hospital of the Faculty of Dentistry and Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong. It has 1,706 beds. It provides general medical and surgical services to the residents of Western and Southern districts and is a tertiary referral centre for the whole territory of Hong Kong and beyond.

Queen Mary Hospital had its foundation stone laid on 10 May 1935 by the governor of Hong Kong, William Peel, and was officially opened on 13 April 1937 by Andrew Caldecott, the then governor of Hong Kong. The hospital was named for Mary of Teck, the widowed queen consort of King George V of the United Kingdom. It then replaced the Government Civil Hospital as the main accident and emergency hospital for Hong Kong Island. The hospital was greatly expanded over the years, with two major expansion projects completed in 1955 and 1983, the second being designed by London-based hospital architects, Llewelyn Davies.

Queen Mary Hospital's main ward tower, Block K, is one of the tallest hospital buildings in Asia at 137 metres (449 ft) (28 storeys).

The Main Block (Wing A to E) is listed as a Grade III historic building. The Nurses Quarters is listed as a Grade II historic building.

As of 31 March 2019, the hospital has 1,711 beds.

I've been tagged, so I'm planning to scan a baby photo of me tomorrow.

Just wanted to tell you a little more about me :)

My name is Jennie Anna Jeanique. I was born at the 20th of May in 1985.

I live in Alkmaar (the Netherlands) with my love Emiel, in our beautiful pallace we bought a year ago. We've been together since August 2007. I finished an education for audio visual design (moving pictures ;)) in 2007, after that I got accepted for a study to become a Drama therapist, but after a few months I had to quit because I had a mental breakdown. After a year of doing nothing but sleeping and sleeping and feeling really shitty I started with my 365 days project. I always wanted to be a photographer, but because I had some discouragement I quited. My other passion is singing and musical. I played ever since I was a kid and did about 12 musicals. I quited last year because I needed something different and because of personal circumstances. I started taking singing lessons 2 times a month, and I love it! When I was a kid I always wanted to be baby-nurse, after that I wanted to be a musical actress for a long time (still do secretly).

I love animals, I feel really comfortable arround them. My dream is to once have a farm with a Hanging belly pig, pigs are one of my favorite animals. My favorite color is green. My favorite english word is 'Fragile'. On my funeral I want loads of color, balloons. And the songs Bird Gurhl by Antony And The Johnsons and the live version of I remember by Damien Rice. My dreams in life are being happy (with Emiel ofcourse), becoming a mother (of Emiels baby DOH!), and maybe having an exhibition of my photos. My biggest fear is to lose someone I love. Pets included. I can't live without my love and my two cats Aunty Sterre and Mister Koika

and doggy Baby Benthe.

My motto is:

"Who wants to live forever"

And my biggest lesson in life is not to look back too much and to love myself.

Thirsty male Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata) at canal (Serangoon River) beside Hougang Ave 7.

12 June 2021 - A while ago, a pet, a critically endangered male Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata) escaped from its owner. It stayed in a canal (Serangoon River) beside Hougang Ave 7 during its short span of freedom. Widely regarded as the world’s most beautiful duck, the male Mandarin Duck is known for its eye-catching plumage. When rumors got to us about this rare and enchanting escapee, we rushed to the spot. The place was very crowded cos this Mandarin Duck had already achieved quite a lot of fame due to many reports and news about its beauty. We noticed that some kind soul has put a huge package of cooked rice into the canal, perhaps for the survival of the Ducky Celebrity. Fortunately we managed to secured a nice place and shot numerous pics of this gorgeous duck.

Update: 1st July 2021 - Heard that the escapee Mandarin Duck was caught by relevant authorities and returned to its owner. Its brief adventure sadly over. However, after its first try at freedom, it managed to escaped many more times and back to captivity, again and again.

Note: The Mandarin Duck is not a resident of Singapore. It is the native of Northern East Asia, eg: Japan, Korea, China and East Russia. And the Mandarin Duck is an endangered species.

Visit: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schooner

A schooner (/ˈskuːnər/) is a type of sailing vessel defined by its rig: fore-and-aft rigged on all of two or more masts and, in the case of a two-masted schooner, the foremast generally being shorter than the mainmast. A common variant, the topsail schooner also has a square topsail on the foremast, to which may be added a topgallant. Differing definitions leave uncertain whether the addition of a fore course would make such a vessel a brigantine. Many schooners are gaff-rigged, but other examples include Bermuda rig and the staysail schooner.

The origins of schooner rigged vessels is obscure, but there is good evidence of them from the early 17th century in paintings by Dutch marine artists. The name "schooner" first appeared in eastern North America in the early 1700s. The name may be related to a Scots word meaning to skip over water,] or to skip stones.

The schooner rig was used in vessels with a wide range of purposes. On a fast hull, good ability to windward was useful for privateers, blockade runners, slave ships, smaller naval craft and opium clippers. Packet boats (built for the fast conveyance of passengers and goods) were often schooners. Fruit schooners were noted for their quick passages, taking their perishable cargoes on routes such as the Azores to Britain. Some pilot boats adopted the rig. The fishing vessels that worked the Grand Banks of Newfoundland were schooners, and held in high regard as an outstanding development of the type. In merchant use, the ease of handling in confined waters and smaller crew requirements made schooners a common rig, especially in the 19th century. Some schooners worked on deep sea routes. In British home waters, schooners usually had cargo-carrying hulls that were designed to take the ground in drying harbours (or, even, to unload dried out on an open beach). The last of these once-common craft had ceased trading by the middle of the 20th century. Some very large schooners with five or more masts were built in the United States from circa 1880–1920. They mostly carried bulk cargoes such as coal and timber. In yachting, schooners predominated in the early years of the America's Cup. In more recent times, schooners have been used as sail training ships.

The Kraków Cloth Hall (Polish: Sukiennice, pronounced [sukʲɛˈɲit͡sɛ]) in Lesser Poland, dates to the Renaissance and is one of the city's most recognizable icons. It is the central feature of the main market square in the Kraków Old Town (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978).

It was once a major centre of international trade. Traveling merchants met there to discuss business and to barter. During its golden age in the 15th century, the hall was the source of a variety of exotic imports from the east – spices, silk, leather and wax – while Kraków itself exported textiles, lead, and salt from the Wieliczka Salt Mine.

The C&O canal, which begins in Georgetown (DC), was originally planned to go all the way to Pittsburgh. The arrival of the railroad put an end to those plans, so it never made it past Cumberland. Haslingden Grane is a glaciated valley lying to the west of Haslingden and in the north east of the West Pennine Moors. It is easily accessible via the B6232 Grane Road which links to the M65 motorway and the A56. It contains three reservoirs: (west to east) Calf Hey Reservoir, Ogden Reservoir and Holden Wood Reservoir.

Prior to the construction of the reservoirs in the 19th century the settlement of Haslingden Grane had a population of 1,300 and was the centre of an illegal whisky distilling industry. The remains of some buildings can still be seen. Much quarrying has taken place in the past and continues at Jamestone Quarry.

The valley is overlooked to the north by Oswaldtwistle Moor and to the south by Musbury Heights. The attractive moorland scenery makes it a popular place for walking especially through the well known Fairy Glen beauty spot, there is an information centre, parking and cafe at Clough Head.

——————

The lilac-breasted roller (Coracias caudatus) is an African member of the roller family of birds. It is widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa and the southern Arabian Peninsula, preferring open woodland and savanna; it is largely absent from treeless places. Usually found alone or in pairs, it perches conspicuously at the tops of trees, poles or other high vantage points from where it can spot insects, lizards, scorpions, snails, small birds and rodents moving about at ground level.

Nesting takes place in a natural hole in a tree where a clutch of 2–4 eggs is laid, and incubated by both parents, who are extremely aggressive in defence of their nest, taking on raptors and other birds. During the breeding season the male will rise to great heights, descending in swoops and dives, while uttering harsh, discordant cries. The sexes are alike in coloration. Juveniles do not have the long tail feathers that adults do.

This species is unofficially considered the national bird of Kenya.

International Marine Passenger Terminal is a cruise ship passenger terminal located in the Port of Toronto at 8 Unwin Avenue in Port Lands, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The facility is operated by PortsToronto.

History

The terminal was opened in 2005. It was originally built to accommodate The Spirit of Ontario I, a water-jet powered big catamaran fast ferry that was to make several round trips per day between Toronto, Ontario and Rochester, New York, but the ferry service only ran for a total of six months. The Rochester firm that owned and operated the ferry had a 14-year lease on the use of the terminal that would have paid the City of Toronto $250,000 per year. The lease was terminated in December 2009 after payment of a $90,000 settlement.

Since the demise of the fast ferry service, PortsToronto has been promoting Toronto as a cruise ship destination. Cruise ships that serve American and European tourists travelling on the Great Lakes between May and October are making increasing use of the terminal as a port of call over the summer months. Indeed cruise passenger volumes at a variety of Great Lakes ports, which cumulatively had 100,000 passengers in 2018, increased between 2015 and 2019 reflecting increased touring on the Great Lakes.

The terminal is a two-storey building which has 38,000 square feet (3,500 m2) of floor space and can deploy an adjustable passenger ramp from the second storey. The terminal facility is reported to have cost either CA$8 million or CA$10.4 million to construct. The terminal building is also regularly used as a film location. For its three years in production the CBC drama The Border used the customs facilities of the terminal as the headquarters of an elite customs and border squad. Renting the terminal for filming costs $3,500 per day.
