Looking across farmland to Whiteside - taken from the back of Lanthwaite wood.

A pretty day - some clouds and still water in the fall mountains. Taken across a pond this is photo of Whiteside Mountian.

Bit of a late start , after Dinner and careful negotiation of the icey country roads had left 3 hours or so of daylight available. So I nipped up Whiteside and almost along the ridge to Hopegill head and enjoyed every minute of this winter walk which left me speechless and with almost a tear in my eye with the beauty that lay all around me

Whiteside Mountain

Jackson County, North Carolina

As the "domestic" (as I call them) cherry trees begin to bloom here in Upstate South Carolina I felt confident enough in the coming warmth to look back at some of my winter shots! This shot is from one of my favorite vantage points looking out onto the sheer side of Whiteside Mountain and out into the headlands area of the Chattooga River and Upstate South Carolina. I had high hopes of catching this scene with the warm glow of the morning sun lighting up the mountain side while it was covered with fresh white powder this winter. However, work and truck repairs and other various life duties ultimately got in the way. I'm just lucky that I even live near these sorts of places and that I have the flexibility in my schedule to enjoy them--it was another great year and I'm looking forward to the spring blooms which have already started here in Upstate South Carolina.

Obituary for William Kingsmill which appeared in the Globe and Mail:

Bill Kingsmill wore many caps in his life - veteran, businessman, skier, tennis partner, chemical engineer, inventor, husband, father, grandfather.

"He was always thinking," said his daughter, Dorion, who worked alongside him at Kingsmill Foods Co. Ltd., the company he founded in 1947, which now produces 200 cocoa products and specialty foods.

Those who love milk but can't stomach it have Mr. Kingsmill to thank for Lacteeze, a lactose-reduced milk he developed in the mid-1980s.

His daughter said his last project for Kingsmill Foods was a new cocoa product. "It's a secret, but it's good," she said, " He had perfect taste buds."

His taste for invention could be seen in his first enterprise in the 1930's - a makeshift ski-pole repair business at Blue Mountain ski resort near Collingwood, Ont., complete with a hacksaw, Tonkin-brand poles, and a bell to notify skiers of the service he and his three brothers provided.

"The bamboo poles back then used to break all the time. He'd take a Tonkin pole, slap a leather handle on it, charge them a little money and off they'd go.

He met Allison, his wife of 58 years, at the University of Toronto during the Second World War before signing up with the Royal Canadian Navy in 1942 and serving as a sub-lieutenant on HMCS Buckingham, a river-class frigate used in protecting convoys against German U-boat attacks.

Paying no mind to those who said that Blue Mountain could not be challenged, he co-founded the private Osler Bluff Ski Club near Collingwood with Struan Robertson in the winter of 1949.

This August, he learned that the cancer in his esophagus had spread to his liver. Active to the end, he played his last game of tennis at the Toronto Lawn and Tennis Club on Oct. 2. Less than a month later, he died peacefully at his home on Oct. 30 at the age of 85.

With regard to Allison Kingsmill, she was the biographer of Alan Brown, the Chief Physician at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and a pioneer paediatrician. The book was titled, Dr. Alan Brown: portrait of a tyrant. Published by Fitzhenry and Whiteside, 1995.

She was also the bibliographer for the Dictionary of Old English research project at the Centre for Medieval Studies a the University of Toronto. www.doe.utoronto.ca. She was one of the authors of its Old English Word Studies: A Preliminary Author and Word List, published in 1983.

With regard to Wallace McCain, he was a billionaire food magnate best known for selling McCain frozen french fries to the masses. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallace_McCain

Whitesides Mountain is one of the most amazing mountains in the south. Unfortunately, there is nasty development around it as seen in this image. The main part of the mountain is on public land. The large cliff (600 feet plus) is on the side not visible in this image. For more information: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whiteside_Mountain

Chrome postcard circa 1959. I have hiked this mountain many times over the past twenty five years. The views at the top are spectacular.

Pacific Whitesided Dolphins. This species of dolphin is among the most amazing and picturesque animals in the sea. A rare treat to see and photograph in the San pedro Channel, Southern California.
