Whiteside Mountain is between the western North Carolina towns of Highlands and Cashiers. Its 700 ft. cliff is a favorite haunt for rock climbers. The top of the mountain is accessible from the highway between Highlands and Cashiers, on the other side of the mountain from this vantage point in Horse Cove. By some trick of acoustics, I've stood at the base of the cliff and heard people on top talking in conversational tones.

M765, the "Turn" job for Widows Creek, Al & Wauhatchie, TN, begins the downhill approach to Wauhatchie Yard right before entering Georgia for a short stint & also right upon entering the eastern time zone as it rolls by the remains of Whiteside Tunnel. 2-9-19

It's very rare for me to very be interested in a #trailfail. I quite honestly just don't understand people that get excited whenever a heritage unit or rare engine comes to an area that is trailing 2nd or 3rd, yet will still want updates & will chase. I just see way better things to get excited for or for much better ways to spend my free time.

However, there are the (very) rare instances where the rule meets its exception. CSX S988 in July of 2022 was one of them. S988 was the delivery run of two brand new Brightline trainsets on their to Florida from the Siemens factory in California. Green 2 & Pink 2, the names the trainsets have been dubbed, were built in anticipation for Brightline's expansion to Orlando which will open later this year.

Having never seen one of the trainsets in person, the chance to document them in territory they'll never be seen in again & with a few friends along for the ride that wanted to see them to, we had ourselves a plan for the afternoon. Here, we see them passing by Nickajack Lake as it closes in on Wauhatchie. 7-17-22

February '96. From the road down Lorton Vale from Cockermouth. The one catching the sun is simply called "Dodd", it should be "Whiteside" but that's the mountain just behind it, partly in the cloud.
