402) Whitehead’s Broadbill

Whitehead's Broadbill, Calyptomena whiteheadi, Ponompok

This species is restricted to montane forests in Northern Borneo. It is the largest species in the genus Calyptomena and is named after the British explorer John Whitehead (1860–1899) who collected specimens and studied natural history in Borneo.

Whitehead's trogon, Borneo, Malaysia.

Faro Blackhead

I was pleasantly "ambushed" by a bunch of friendly whitehead/pōpokatea when visiting Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari. Despite the sunny weather, down on the forest floor in the shade it is still pretty dark. Hence a low-ish shutterspeed, widest aperture as possible and high iso. I shot this photo 1 stop under exposed. Denoised, sharpened and exposure lifted in pp.

Nationally the endemic whitehead population is declining.

At 3400 hectares, makes it one of the largest pest-proof fenced projects in the world. This pest-proof fence is 47km long and offers a safe haven for many of New Zealand’s most endangered species.

Whitehead's Trogon, Harpactes whiteheadi, Kombuango Puru

A beautiful Trogon endemic to the island of Borneo. It is named after the British explorer John Whitehead (1860–1899) who collected natural history specimens in Borneo and elsewhere in Southeast Asia.

Another whitehead shot from when I was "ambushed" by a bunch of friendly whitehead/pōpokatea when visiting Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari.

I just noticed that this whitehead sits on the same branch where the Robin was sitting earlier.

Whiteheads / pōpokatea are gregarious songbirds that live in noisy groups of up to 8 members and that are often heard before they are seen. They are only found in the North Island where they inhabit mostly the canopy regions of tall dense forest. Their numbers have been in decline but relocations in recent years have seen some very good results with several newly established populations. Whiteheads are the only North Island hosts for the long-tailed cuckoo.

These birds are usually playing hard to get as they tend to prefer the forest canopy where there isn't much light. Hence this belly shot from way below with a some light coming in sideways! My first decent kind of shot of the white head!

Taken on Tiritiri Matangi Island which is a pest free wildlife reserve.

Whitehead's 900 Legend westbound out of Ararat. November 2020.

A gentle stroll along the promenade... Just looking through the others, I think I forgot about still life or didn't have a clear idea what it is

Whitehead is a small seaside town on the east coast of County Antrim, Northern Ireland, lying almost midway between the towns of Carrickfergus and Larne

Fuji Pro 400H in Bronica SQ-A

Fuji Pro 400H in Bronica SQ-A

The mid-afternoon train from Belfast to Larne rounds White Head - approaching the town of Whitehead, Co Antrim

Cades Cove, Smoky Mountain NP.

The home was constructed of square-sawed logs, finely finished inside to make them smooth and attractive. Square-log construction was naturally well-insulated by approximately four-inch thick walls and virtually no space between logs, so the cabin was especially warm by Cades Cove standards.

The Henry Whitehead Place is not only the only square-log home remaining in Cades Cove, it is also the only one left in the entire Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
