rp @eliana.chinea: When it comes to privilege we need to fully understand what that means, because we all have it just some more than others. And if that privilege goes unchecked you will fall prey to doing this work centering the oppressor rather than uplifting the oppressed.

.

One example can be seen as paying hundreds or thousands of dollars for social justice or anti racism courses run by white folks who earn a profit off your coins rather than volunteering their time for a BIPOC leader to be amplified instead.

.

There’s a reason whiteness centers itself in this work, and literally everything else, and there’s a reason bias justifies you to pay them and not the BIPOC leaders who are more effective and have a lived experience guiding them.

.

There’s also a reason why Latinx and Black women only have $100 in wealth on average as compared to the average white woman who has $40k in wealth. And there’s a reason the most truly diverse companies are the most innovative as well, but not the ones who tokenize diversity and just hire brown and black folks for lower level positions. It’s the companies who create equity for BIPOC and pay them equally for upper management roles, including them in decision making and amplifying their contributions.

.

So, what do you say we stop playing games and we start dismantling oppressive systems by creating equity for the oppressed?! - #diversityandinclusion #nashvilleteacher #antiracism #highereducation #blackhistory #ally #teachershare #blackintheivory #whitefragility #changingthenarrative #ushistory #socialstudies #historyteacher #teacherproblems

rp @moemotivate: Right now, diet culture is so loud and pervasive that it feels impossible to escape it.

The messages are everywhere.

They’re in our inbox, text messages, social media, doctors office and so on.

The messages come with or without our permission and there’s no time to brace yourself.

All the message sum up to the overarching narrative that our value and access to every aspect of life is determined by how much we can measure up to the unrealistic and unattainable Eurocentric standard of beauty. The messages pressure us to believe that our our bodies are what define us and that our bodies need to controlled, manipulated and managed to get and stay as thin as possible.

Diet culture wants us to be obsessed with our weight and the size & shape of our bodies.

Not because it’s healthy, but because it’s oppressive.

The constant concern about managing our weight is not rooted in health but is instead rooted in diet culture which is rooted in white supremacy.

The pursuit of thinness is anti-blackness.

The more you unpack diet culture the more you’ll learn and discover its racist origins.

So if we want to dismantle diet culture we have to get at the roots of it and that’s white supremacy.

What if instead of trying to demonize and make carbs out to be the enemy to humanity, you actually worked to eliminate the real and violent threat to humanity...white supremacy.

What if you spent more time, money and energy on trying to eliminate racism and not carbs.

Carbs are great...racism is deadly.

How are you working today to dismantle white supremacy? - #diversityandinclusion #nashvilleteacher #antiracism #highereducation #blackhistory #ally #teachershare #blackintheivory #whitefragility #changingthenarrative #ushistory #socialstudies #historyteacher #teacherproblems

I’ve got some questions for you…

...

Have you ever wondered why you feel comfortable and even justified in asking for the free labor and access to women of color, especially black women?

...

Have you considered that not only do we not owe anyone anything, but that a way to redistribute power is to ensure that women of color are paid and paid well?

...

Have you ever asked yourself why you believe you’re the exception?

rp @ckyourprivilege: Change is possible on this journey, but it begins with unlearning, and self kindness in the process. At some point we realize we cannot begin healing from white supremacy racism until we do our own collective work. rp @nmaahc: For survival and progress, African Americans developed diverse religious institutions, from the first independent congregations established by free blacks in the early 1800s to contemporary black churches, temples, mosques, and synagogues. These institutions served as centers of moral and political leadership and provided services and support to urban and rural communities. Spiritual beliefs and faith practices offered hope and comfort, the will to resist oppression, and the values of self-determination and pride.

Repost from @moemotivate. What was the defining moment for you?

.

When did you realize that sitting on the sidelines and observing wasn’t enough? When did you decide that saying “I don’t know where to start” was no longer acceptable for you?

.

When did you decide that you actually want to be a part of the solution and be on the just and humane side of history?

.

When did you decide that you can actually do something about racism and that you don’t have to have all the answers?

.

When did you decide that starting right where you are and with what you have was better than not starting at all?

.

What was the defining moment for you? Maybe you haven’t had a defining moment and you’re still sitting in the background...what will it take for you to see that you have a big responsibility in changing the world around you?

.

What might it take for you to see that this work is for you too? This month the enrollment for the next round of the Unity Over Comfort program opens up and I’m switching things up a bit in this round. Repost from @moemotivate.

rp @moemotivate: Do the Black folks in your life know how much you tokenize them in an attempt to excuse yourself from doing this work?

Have you told the Black folks in your life that when folks discuss matters of racism that you respond with telling folks about the presence of Black folks in your life?

How many times have you told the Black folks in your life, “hey, to avoid the discomfort & responsibility of this work, I use my relationship with you as an excuse and a shield. So I basically exploit our relationship for my benefit. Much like my ancestors did when they would enslave Black folks & exploit their labor for their benefit. I hope you don’t mind. But if you do I’ll just blame it all on you & carry on to the next Black person I can exploit”.

Have you told them this?

Probably not. But this is what you’re doing.

This is what you’re doing even when you’re not saying it but when you’re thinking that bc you have proximity to Blackness that you can’t be racist & therefore don’t need to engage in anti-racism.

But this couldn’t be any further from the truth.

In fact, the closer proximity you have to us should motivate you even more to do this work bc you realize the great possibilities of harm.

But because y’all are too concerned with your ego & your comfort, you bypass the work & carry on believing you’re “woke” because your bestie is Black.

Meanwhile, your bestie has never told you about the racism you’ve engaged in towards them—not because it hasn’t happened but bc they don’t feel safe to share.

And maybe they have shared but you’re not doing the work so you responded poorly & caused more harm—now things have changed between you.

If I knew a white person in my life used their proximity to me as an excuse to avoid this work I would feel betrayed & I would cut them off.

But so many of y’all do this with no regard to the feelings of the person your tokenizing.

And what’s even worse is that you’re going to cause more direct harm the closer you are to Black folks if you’re not at least attempting to do this work.

Stop making excuses to avoid this work & stop exploiting your relationships with Black folks to bypass the responsibility of doing this work.

rp @workingclasshistory: 19 September 1793, during the Haitian revolution, 600 British soldiers sent from Jamaica landed at Jérémie, Haiti. They were welcomed by the white French property owners, who had signed a secret accommodation with Britain. In exchange for their support, Saint Domingue would become a British colony. Slavery would be reinstated, people of colour would be stripped of citizenship, and the conditions of Britain's economic policies would favour the colonists. They fought for five years until eventually defeated by the Haitian revolutionary forces.
