Serious question, I’ll wait 💁‍♀️ Are you here to support or are you here for “resources” and education? Cause I’m not a resource, I’m a whole human being, and I center BIPOC not white enlightenment. So are you here for for the moment or are you here in true solidarity for the long haul? And if you’re BIPOC, let me know how you’re feeling about all this, I know you got some thoughts about what you’re witnessing! 👀- #diversityandinclusion #nashvilleteacher #antiracism #highereducation #blackhistory #ally #teachershare #blackintheivory #whitefragility #changingthenarrative #ushistory #socialstudies #historyteacher #teacherproblems

rp @uncolonial_history: Throughout history, American racists have ironically tried to use the idea of “freedom” as an excuse to oppress. Slave owners said “big government should not interfere in our right to own slaves. This is our God-given liberty.” Segregationists argued “we have the right to separate races. Stay out of our way of life.”

Repost from @moemotivate. There’s nothing comfortable or convenient about experiencing racism yet we deal with it everyday.

But it doesn’t have to be this way and it will take white people doing their part to change this reality.

There’s no perfect time or place to engage in this work—the time is now. Repost from @moemotivate

rp @christenacleveland: Indeed, conversations about racial inequality are often engineered to avoid making white people feel guilty.

Inequality exists because guilty people have produced societal systems that accommodate some people and alienate others. And inequality exists because guilty people continue to benefit from these unjust societal systems. All privileged people participate in our unequal societal structure – some perpetuate it knowingly, some perpetuate it unknowingly, and others resist it as revolutionaries. All who have ever perpetuated it knowingly or unknowingly are guilty. For them, experiencing guilt is a crucial part of the justice journey. The trick is to *use guilt* rather than be *used by shame.* This is difficult because we often confuse guilt and shame. Both are moral emotions that involve feeling bad. But guilt is constructive; it focuses on an act or action that is wrong. Guilt says, "I did something wrong." On the contrary, shame is destructive; rather than focusing on an isolated act, it spreads to the whole person. "Shame says, "I am wrong." Shame makes us want to walk away from our truest selves, the divine and community. Shame makes us want to avoid the truth. Guilt is underrated. Engaging it, meditating on it, confessing it, and repenting of it can be immensely helpful in conversations about inequality and reconciliation work. Guilt should be a centerpiece of the conversation, rather than something to be avoided. How do you use guilt in your practice of justice? Do you try not to use it?

There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to be understood & not being heard. This is a constant problem between black & white folk on matters of race. Constant.

I shared a post about intent over impact & it wound some of you up. Me calling out racism, even the unintentional, (which if you follow this work, will know this is THE most insidious kind that causes more harm that overt acts of intentional hate), & I got accused of being abusive to innocent well intended people.

rp @eliana.chinea: There’s nothing more annoying than reading on a website, or going to a diversity and inclusion event or panel, and hearing someone talk about D&I as merely a strategy that will make a company more money. Although yes, that is a side effect of being an ethical company, people of color are not tools or pawns for a bottom line. That is the very mindset we are trying to shift, and need to shift immediately. I realize this is not a popular opinion within the corporate world, but I’m less interested in what’s popular with a company than I am with dismantling these capitalist and dehumanizing systems of thought for the sake of the people of color working within them. Studies show the workplace is still highly segregated by race and class, with brown and black people working lower level positions and whites working upper management. Strategy alone will not solve this issue, we need to evolve the way people think about POC and breakdown race and bias to its roots. It’s time we all stop trying to make people comfortable or convince them of our humanity and start speaking the truth... rp @wearepushblack: in 1963, 200,000 people swarmed the nation's capital for the March on Washington for jobs and freedom. The monumental event organized by civil rights activist we know and love like Dr.Martin Luther King Jr., Congressman John Lewis, and A. Philip Randolph helped ignite a national awakening around systemic racism and economic injustice.

At a time when our rights are still being threatened, Black unemployment rates are at an all-time high and organizing is more challenging than ever, it's important we honor and uplift this monumental display of Black unity and those that brought it to pass. Get in and stay in the streets of every city, every village of this nation .. until true freedom comes."

Most Americans are largely uninformed of our nation's history of white supremacy and racial terror (Noelle Hurd). With the recent attention spotlighting the Confederate flag, let's talk about the Civil War.

-

Hurd goes on to remind us that the Civil War was fought over slavery and one of its offshoots – the convict-lease system – did not end until the 1940s

-

The Civil War was fought over the South’s desire to maintain the institution of slavery in order to continue to profit from it. It is not possible to separate the Confederacy from a pro-slavery agenda and curriculums across the nation must be clear about this fact.

-

After the end of the Civil War, southern whites sought to keep slavery through other means. Following a brief post-Civil War period known as Reconstruction, white southerners created new laws that gave them legal authority to arrest blacks over the most minor offenses, such as not being able to prove they had a job.

-

While imprisoned under these laws, Black people were then leased to corporations and farms where they were forced to work without pay under extremely harsh conditions. This “convict leasing” was, as many have argued, slavery by another name and it persisted until the 1940s. Comment "no more whitewashed history" if you want history unwhitewashed.
