West side of Mount Saint Helens with a view into part of the crater left from the erruption. You can just barely see whisps of steam coming from inside. This volcano is still active.
Photographing smoke art is one of the most rewarding aspects of home photography. We've all seen the wispy strands that float and glide through the air, but it's not until these trails are frozen in time do we see the true beauty and elegance of their construction.
In many images it's possible to see a subject within the smoke.
The advantage of smoke art photography is that - compared to water droplets - the patterns take longer to form so it's easier to judge when to take the shot. It's when the scene is viewed on the screen that the true diversity and uniqueness of the patterns is realised.
This was processed in Photoshop to highlight the patterns that exist within the formations.
The class unit for BN's large SD9 fleet moves a much newer SD40-2 off a wisker track in Superior. Note the whisp of steam from under the turntable (it was moved with steam). September of 1979 during a tour.
The Demon From Down Under, wearing his UWF title belt and wearing the new outfit I made for his title defence in Japan.
View from my office this morning. The black shapes at the bottom are whisps of fog and within them are street lights. Also those are power cables.
What a beautiful evening. The birds were singing. The gentle breeze was blowing. A song filled the air~
a whisp of spanish moss provides stark contrast to a more "traditional" looking bronzed moss growing on the side of a beech tree in the forest of Arthurs Pass National Park in New Zealand.
So, I mentioned we were busy... Take a look at this and the last two photo's. Zion at dark Friday night, Antelope Canyon mid-day Saturday in Page, AZ and here in Monument Valley for Sunset Saturday night. All in less then 24 hours.
Would I recomend this, Hell NO! We got lucky as well as got burned just a little in Monument valley. We had a cloud show up out of nowhere in the last 10 minutes of sunset (fricken prime gloden light was difused...)
We did get a couple hours down in the valley, which we had not expected. I would still recomend to spend a day out here, you easily could. Then, if you lose a shot to conditions, you have a chance to make it up.
We still killed um, and had an unexpected bonus in after hours shots, on our way back to Page, that night.

I wrote a poem called "This Whisper of
Christmas" . Let me quote the first line: "On this special night, look up at the stars, speak a happy wish out loud, and be a child once again..."
Merry Christmas!!

J'ai écrit un poème appelé " Ce Chuchotement de Noël ". Me permettre de citer la première ligne : "Sur cette nuit spéciale, le regard en haut aux étoiles, parler un souhait heureux tout haut, et être enfant de nouveau. ..”
Joyeux Noël ! !

The smoke was created by burning an incense stick and the light was a flashgun behind and below at an angle of 45° upwards. The result was processed in Photoshop.
I got a bit bored one evening so I got the studio set up and started taking smoke photographs. Unfortunately I bought the cheapest, foulest smelling joss stick ever.
