My entry for the third round of Rogue Olympics 2024. This time topic is "Volume". I'd say the product the nice guy in the picture creates has approx. 45 % vol. - volume percent.

Still dog sitting. This is whiskey. Belongs to my eldest daughter. He got his name because my son in law is a fan of the stuff.

When I was part of the Nortbay Special Crews, our satellite yard was a stones throw from the main yard but to drive there, you had to cross the Petaluma River...We had a short cut that would take us right by this place, which I had forgotten about...doing a little research I found that due to Covid, the place was shut down, which is a travesty because they had an enormous collection of fine whiskies...in particularly, Pappy Van Winkle, which I have been dying to try but a bottle is a bit out of my reach...

One's the devil, one keeps driving me insane

At times I wonder if they ain't both the same

But one's a liar that helps to hide me from my pain

And one's the long gone bitter truth

That's the difference between whiskey and you

At Kasteel Engelenburg, Holland.

There'll be no rest for the wicked

There's no song for the choir

There's no hope for the weary

If you let them win without a fight

CP train 280 has just lost its' crew and sits awaiting a slot on the BRC. In the meantime, a train of empty whiskey rolls down 3 main for the "top of the hill" at CP Galewood East. With all the talk of CP lease returns from BNSF and traffic in the typical new year slowdown, I'm sure its just a matter of time before this oddity hits the storage line again. One of the copper stills reaching high to the sky at the Kilbeggan Whiskey Distillery in Ireland

near Lake Rotoiti, are 40m high and named after an illicit still that was found there in the 1880's. New Zealand

The rumors flew but nobody knew how much she blamed herself

For years and years she tried to hide the whiskey on her breath

She finally drank her pain away a little at a time

But she never could get drunk enough to get him off her mind

Until the night

Whiskey Jacks, also known as Grey Jays, are playful and mischievous birds. My daughters were eating Doritos when a pair swooped down and stole some right from their hands. I told the girls to take a chip, hold it up in their palms and stand very still, and sure enough the birds came back for several more.

The name Whiskey Jack is an anglicized form of Wisakedjak, which is the name of a trickster god in Cree mythology.

These photos were taken in Quetico Provincial Park, Ontario.

Not sure the history of the name of this suburb on Quadra, but I'm sure there's an interesting one.

Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Rye

Classification: Rye

Company: Brown-Forman

Distillery: Jack Daniel's Distillery

Released: Ongoing

Proof: 94

Age: NAS

Mashbill: 70% Rye, 18% Corn, 12% Malted Barley

Color: Amber

MSRP: $50 (2017)

NOSE

A welcoming array of cherry and banana, offset by bouts of custard, oak, and faint rye spice. A dash of ethanol is present but doesn’t sabotage an otherwise nice experience. Enjoyable, and surprisingly tame in intensity, what’s definitely notable is the restraint and overall gentleness this young whiskey is sporting. This isn’t a typical bombastic rye whiskey nose, for better or for worse.

PALATE

It tastes a bit simple at first. A heavy dose of banana is upfront that’s followed by caramel and cherry. The palate never quite fully develops into an array of flavors. Instead, the highlight here is its very enjoyable buttery mouthfeel that simply settles on a baked plantain, oak, and rye spice blend that’s straightforward and satisfying. Slightly reminiscent of Jack Daniel’s No 7 flavors and characteristics the whiskey is known for, but still its own beast.

FINISH

There’s a noticeable ethanol bite on the finish that’s saddled with rye spice and oak. Lasting notes of cinnamon and vanilla ride out this medium length finish. It’s on the dry side and easily the whiskey’s weakest link.

UNIQUENESS

With rye’s increased popularity, many new ryes have popped up on store shelves over the past few years. The majority of them have been sourced from MGP, resulting in a very similar tasting landscape. Even some of the Kentucky majors, like Woodford and Jim Beam, released new rye whiskeys, and in their particular cases have been downright lackluster. In Jack Daniel’s case though, this Single Barrel Rye is one of the more interesting and unique ryes, especially for how young it is.
