Yesterday I wrote about how I had a lot more time to read this year. The tradeoff, apparently, was that I had a lot less time to see movies. In DC, I worked around the corner from E Street and two blocks from Regal, and I worked a schedule that meant the end of my workday coincided with the start time for a lot of movies. Here in New York, though I have access to so many more art-house theaters and screenings that maybe wouldn't have made DC, it just seems harder to fit them into my life.

I used to love movie theaters because I could go into them and escape by myself for a few hours. Now, working nights and already dealing with occasional feelings of isolation, I just don't seek that out as often. I've spent so much of this year craving sunshine and socialization, and movies seem to be a victim here. That made the movies that I did see stand out a little more, and it made me appreciate them a little more (so did paying $14 a pop, so thanks for that bit of price gouging, New York). Looking at the year-end lists, there's a lot of catching up I have to do in January, and I'm looking forward to doing that. For now, though, these are the Top 5 movies I saw in 2011:

5: The Muppets

Because it was charming and delightful and hit all the right moods in exactly the right places. It was sweet and honest and made me smile.

4: Moneyball

At its best, a good baseball game has a narrative all its own, and it's a sport that has inspired a lot of very fine films. (Sam Raimi's "For The Love Of The Game" is greatly underappreciated, by the way). It's an easy drama, and in an especially skilled storyteller's hands, even the most mundane elements--in this case, statistics--become fascinating. And it was just nice to see that Brad Pitt got tired of coasting for a while.

3: Senna

I don't like racing. At all. I know nothing about it, I think it's silly, and I don't understand why so many people around the world take it so very seriously. But just like "Moneyball" up there, a good story is a good story. This documentary about the life of Ayrton Senna made me care rather deeply for two hours about something I'd barely heard of beforehand.

2: The Skin I Live In

Erotic and creepy and deeply disturbing, in all the best ways. Pedro Almadovar made a "Human Centipede" for film snobs, and it did it perfectly.

1: Margin Call

It's always the little ones that stick with you. In this case it was the cast that I couldn't forget: Kevin Spacey, Stanley Tucci, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Demi Moore. The ensemble is so huge that everyone makes the most of their tiny parts; the pieces add up to a magnificent whole that dramatizes the 2008 financial collapse in a way that, like "Moneyball," turns a deeply complex, numbers-driven mess into a dramatic tale.

Other movies I loved: Hugo, Beginners, Drive, Hesher, The Swell Season, Submarine.
