this is my impression of a weegee photo, and in order to suspend your disbelief, you must first assume that this flower against the endless sky broken by power lines was a crime scene in 1940s los angeles, and that somewhere, unseen in the photo, is a street sign saying something that brings a layer of irony or serendipitous context to the whole thing. in that sense, one must also invoke the avant garde, and claim that the presence of this unseen street sign is denoted by its very absence. i know it's a bit of a reach, but don't argue and just go along; i got nothing else.

Yes, we know it's misspelled. It's a joke.

Oil Paint

73cm x 58cm

These two images are altered versions of photographs done by the 30s and 40s street photographer Weegee - one of a pair kissing at the movies, and the other of Marilyn Monroe. This is one of my favourite paintings that I've done - I love both the subject and the color scheme. I am also really proud of my placement of the paint, especially for the man's hand in the left image and the entirety of the portrait of Monroe. This is the first painting that I really managed to achieve a dark to light layering of the paint, and I think that that really helped to add life and dimension to all of the figures.
