(Our Daily Challenge - MYTHS & LEGENDS)
(112 in 2012 - #58 - DELICATE)
I always thought dandelions were a nuisance and a weed but here is some interesting myths and legends about them that I found:
- If you blow a seed head, the number of seeds remaining are the number of children you will have.
- When dandelions appear in dreams, they are thought to represent happy unions.
- Legend has it that the tallest dandelion stalk that a kid could find in the early spring will show how much taller he or she will grow in the coming year.
- If you blow on a white dandelion head and every seed scatters then you are loved. If some seeds still cling to the stalk, you're out of luck.
- If you make a wish right before blowing on dandelion, your wish just might come true.
- Others claim that the number of seeds remaining are how many years you have left to live.
- Burying near the northwestern corner of your home is said to bring good weather.
Who knew??? :-)
A weed can be considered any plant that's growing where it's not wanted. A maple seedling among miniature irises is as much as weed as a dandelion growing in your lawn.
Give the maple another year or two and its biomass will equal the irises. In 10 or 15 years it will shade out the vicinity all around it as well as using up most of the available nutrients in the soil.
Planted environments change. Vegetation dynamics, succession, and interactions are all examples of a changing plant community.
Arrowhead Weed silhouetted against a softly clouded sky. Arrowhead Weed always thrills me. Almost thirty years ago I found myself canoeing through what was then the largest area of burn in Ontario; over three-hundred and fifty thousand acres of grey-black rock. The shield looked lunar not boreal. But out of the water came arrowhead, green with purple flowers, life reclaiming the devistation of an inferno.

The onset of the rainy season means that we will be cutting back the grass every 2-3 weeks. In the past we used to call a guy and he would come by early Saturday morning. This year though, Eric, our gardener has bought a weed-whacker to earn extra money on the days he is not working here. I have him whacking away on a regular work day and pay him extra for the use of his machine.
The tall border grass you see in front of him is lemon grass and no that does not get whacked.
Mt Shasta is a massive peak in northern California. This picture was taken
at Weed, CA, coming from the Oregon border. If you look there is a big
highway with many trucks at a weigh station getting weighed for taxing
purposes and all around is completely empty space because there is only few
cities in the area. This is environment because it shows our use of empty
space which is nothing and it shows the use of trucks to transport all of
California's goods.
