The stone circle at Castlerigg is situated near Keswick in Cumbria, North West England. One of around 1,300 stone circles in the British Isles and Brittany, it was constructed as a part of a megalithic tradition that lasted from 3,300 to 900 BC, during the Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Ages. The is perhaps the most atmospheric and dramatically sited of all British stone circles, with panoramic views and the mountains of Helvellyn and High Seat as a backdrop.

I couldn’t resist this shot of the church at Vidareidi, in the Faroe’s Northern Isles. Again I’ve turned to my Big Stopper filter, to make use of the cloud formation over one of the large sea cliffs. Instead of making this a true mono image, I’ve chosen to leave a small remnant of colour in the image, which seemed fitting when the church appeared so modern when viewed against its primordial surroundings.

Another view over Side Pike and the Langdales but perhaps a little less popular. I think I prefer this image and like the way the wall disappears off to the right and then re-appears further down into the shot. I ended up taking quite a few shots from here but settled on this one as the light was further down Mickleden and separated Side Pike slightly more from the backdrop of Bow Fell.

Les deux images des Piliers de la création montrent toutes deux une région de formation d'étoiles dans la Nébuleuse de l'Aigle, située à 6 500 années-lumière de la Terre, dans la constellation de la Queue du Serpent (Serpens Cauda). Hubble l'a capturée en lum!ère visible pour la première fois en 1995 et l'a revisitée en 2014. L'image de Webb, prise dans le proche infrarouge et donc invisible à nos yeux, a pu par contre percer l'opacité due à la poussière et révéler davantage d'étoiles.

A gauche, la vue en lumière visible de Hubble montre des piliers plus sombres montant du bas vers le haut de l'écran et se terminant en trois points. Le fond est opaque, rehaussé de jaune et de vert vers le bas, et de bleu et de violet vers le haut, avec une poignée d'étoiles de différentes tailles. Lorsque des nœuds avec une masse suffisante se forment dans les piliers de gaz et de poussière, ceux-ci commencent à s'effondrer sous leur propre gravité, se réchauffent lentement et finissent par former de nouvelles étoiles.

L'image proche infrarouge de Webb à droite (recadrée et tournée pour correspondre à la vue de Hubble, avec de ce fait des parties laissées en noir) montre les mêmes piliers, mais semi-opaques et de couleur rouge rouille. De jeunes étoiles lancent périodiquement des jets supersoniques qui entrent en collision avec des nuages ​​​​de matière, comme ces épais piliers, entraînant parfois aussi des chocs d'étrave, qui peuvent former des motifs ondulés comme le fait un bateau lorsqu'il se déplace dans l'eau.

La lueur cramoisie provient des molécules d'hydrogène énergétiques qui résultent des jets et des chocs. Cela est particulièrement évidant sur les sommets des deuxième et troisième piliers où sont mis en valeur dans des tons bruns plus foncés aux contours rouges. Les lignes ondulées ressemblant à de la lave sur les bords de certains piliers sont des éjections d'étoiles qui se forment encore dans le gaz et la poussière, et ne sont âgées que de quelques centaines de milliers d’années. L'arrière-plan est coulé dans des bleus et des noirs plus foncés avec des étoiles jaunes et blanches de toutes tailles tachant toute la scène (cf. NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI).

The history of the churchThe Church of the Epiphany and St. Mark, Parkdale, is a small inclusive parish of the Anglican Church of Canada located in Toronto, Ontario. The church was founded upon the amalgamation of The Church of the Epiphany and The Church of St. Mark, Parkdale in 1983.

St. Mark, Parkdale was set apart as an independent parish on July 1st, 1876. Prior to this the area had been part of St. Anne's parish. The first services were held on December 16, 1877 in a small frame building built on the church's present site on Cowan Avenue, below Queen Street. The lot cost $900 and the 25ft x 15ft building cost a further $600. The cornerstone of the current building was laid by the Bishop of Toronto on October 11th, 1880. The church was opened and dedicated on January 20th, 1881. As a result of significant population growth in Parkdale in the 1880's, the church grew from 40 families in 1880 to 320 in 1887 and the need for another parish was recognized.

Construction of the Church of the Epiphany took place at the corner of Queen Street and Beaty Avenue in 1887 and the first services were held on November 18th of that year. This building is still present south of the newer sanctuary building which was erected and opened on March 31, 1911. The Church of the Epiphany had a close association with Wycliffe College. Its founding rector, Rev. Bernard Bryan, had been one of the nine men who constituted the first class at Wycliffe in 1877. This connection continued when in 1969 the Church of the Epiphany's rector, the Rev. Leslie Hunt, was appointed Principal of Wycliffe College. This connection gave the Church of the Epiphany an evangelical orientation.

Amalgamation

As a result of shifting demographics in Parkdale, the Executive committee of the Diocese of Toronto confirmed the amalgamation of the parishes and congregations of the Church of the Epiphany and the Church of St. Mark, Parkdale on January 27th, 1983. On February 8th of that year, the amalgamated vestry voted to locate at the Church of St. Mark, Parkdale and to accept an offer from the Maronite Church to purchase the Church of the Epiphany's buildings. This church is now known as Our Lady of Lebanon.

L'image de la galaxie IC 5332 prise par l'instrument MIRI du télescope spatial Webb est située à environ 29 millions d'années-lumière dans la constellation du Sculpteur (Sculptor) et s’étend sur environ 66 000 années-lumière (environ 1/3 de la Voie lactée). Elle ressemble à des toiles d'araignées grises en forme de spirale. Le noyau de la galaxie brille d'un bleu foncé. Les étoiles, vues comme de minuscules points bleus, sont dispersées, des points rouges plus clairsemés et plus grands étant répartis entre les bras spiraux, sur un fond sombre (cf. ESA/Webb, NASA & CSA, J. Lee and the PHANGS-JWST and PHANGS-HST Teams).

Dans cette vue de Jupiter, créée à partir de plusieurs images composites, les aurores (constituées de particules venues du Soleil réagissant au champ magnétique de l’astre) s'étendent à des altitudes élevées au-dessus de ses pôles nord et sud. Celles-ci brillent dans un filtre aux couleurs rouges, mettant notamment en évidence la lumière réfléchie par les nuages ​​​​inférieurs et les brumes supérieures.

Un filtre différent, centré sur les jaunes et les verts, montre des brumes tourbillonnant autour des pôles. Le troisième filtre, centré sur le bleu, présente la lumière réfléchie par un nuage plus profond.

La grande tache rouge, tempête qui pourrait "avaler" la Terre, apparaît blanche ici avec des brumes, tout comme la région équatoriale, les autres nuages réfléchissant beaucoup de lumière solaire. Les nombreux points et traînées blancs brillants sont probablement des sommets de nuages ​​​​à très haute altitude aux orages convectifs condensés. The dawn colours mark the summer solstice over Seacombe ledges, Dorset. I spent the night here with the intention of shooting some star trails but the sky clouded over soon after it began to get dark, leaving me to take this image the next morning. A couple of committed fishermen were already casting their lines by the time I’d set up, and ended up providing the scene with a nice sense of scale, and what I now see as a focal point to the image.

De la taille de la Voie lactée, la galaxie NGC 3256 se trouve à environ 120 millions d'années-lumière de la Terre dans la constellation des Voiles (Vela) et fait partie du superamas Hydra-Centaurus. Son tourbillon de bras en spirale, étroitement entrelacés dans un nuage de lumière brumeux, montre les conséquences d'un ancien choc cosmique. Cette galaxie déformée est en effet l'épave d'une collision frontale entre deux galaxies spirales qui s'est probablement produite il y a 500 millions d'années et est parsemée d'amas de jeunes étoiles qui se sont formées lorsque le gaz et la poussière des deux galaxies sont entrés en collision en laissant des queues de marée.

Ce passé tumultueux est capturé dans les longues vrilles de poussière brillante et d'étoiles qui s'étendent vers l'extérieur, depuis le corps principal de la galaxie. Les régions rouges et orange, réparties dans la galaxie, contiennent de jeunes étoiles créées lors de la fusion qui irradient de petits grains de poussière, émettant ensuite une lumière infrarouge. Ce mélange des spirales des deux galaxies initiales est amené à disparaître au fil du temps, notamment quand les deux noyaux galactiques, actuellement très proches l’un de l’autre, fusionneront. De spirale, la galaxie NGC 3256 deviendra alors elliptique.

Description de l'image :

Vue de face sur fond noir, cette grande galaxie spirale a un noyau rayonnant très fort. Des traînées de poussière tourbillonnantes brillent d'un rose orangé au centre et dans la majeure partie de la galaxie. Ce gaz est entouré d'un halo gris foncé composé d' étoiles. Ce halo s'étend en une queue de marée (une longue vrille de poussière et d'étoiles) en haut à gauche et une autre en bas à droite. Des dizaines de petites étoiles et galaxies lointaines l'entourent (cf. ESA/Webb, NASA & CSA, L. Armus, A. Evans).
