Georgina Campbell's Review

Although the building and setting will be familiar to returning diners – and fans will be glad to find that the little old-fashioned bar at the side, and its open fire, are still there - the new owners have done a major interior revamp and landscaped the gardens. And, of course, there is a welcoming red door.

With bay windows everywhere and bevelled glass doors, the building is bright and the rooms have interesting shapes (also open fires, although all are gas except for the bar); each room is named according to the décor or character – The Willow Room, The Violet Room, The View, The Red Room - and there’s a covered refuge for smokers.

All round, a meal here should be a very enjoyable outing - it’s a beautiful place, the food is pleasing and, under the direction of Restaurant Manager Frances Doherty, the lovely staff are efficient, and very attentive.

The Inn at Vint Hill is at 4200 Aiken Drive Warrenton, Virginia 20187. The history at Vent Hill, the Italianate brick mansion of Bessie & Andrew Low is a great read. Vint Hill began as a 729 acre cattle and sheep farm. It experienced the 'Grapewood Encounter' which was a Civil War skirmish involving Confederate Colonel John S. Mosby. It then became the center of social gatherings for high society in Fauquier County after Mitchell Harrison purchased Vint Hill in 1910 and used the farm to raise thoroughbred cattle and horses until 1927. In June 1942 the United States Government purchased Vint Hill (Silvermead) for $127,500 and it became the first enemy listening station and intelligence training center of the United States. During World War II radio intercept operators were able to eavesdrop on a radio message between the Japanese Ambassador to Japan and Japanese military officials and decode the complete plans of Atlantic Wall defenses leading to the D-Day invasion at Normandy. Vint Hill later served the country as a military officer's club and community club before becoming a special event facility.
