Thank you to all those who gave feedback about the site after yesterday's quieter ad.
I value the comments of Flickr friends greatly as many of you are very experienced and excellent photographers...far more so than just an opportunist enthusiast like me. Still, my own web gallery was always a goal.
The lira is very weak and sites and domains are expensive, Smugmug, with the Flickr discount, was my only option. Which is why the eBook produce will hopefully back up the few print sales to allow renewal.
Some drawbacks to using Smugmug but overall, not bad. Their helpdesk support has been superb!
Thank you again and I hope the indulgence of this ad isn't too obtrusive!
Wishing you all a good weekend!
The elevator at Truax (pronounced "treks", I believe) was built in 1912 and is now privately owned. You can't see very well from this picture, but the tracks have mostly (but not completely) been pulled up. If you walk over them and look down you will see that the each rail fastener is stamped with the date June 3, 1913.
This is the last image from my springtime trip to Saskatchewan. For a trip that started as a Plan B (after the last-minute cancellation of my storm chasing trip this year) it turned out to be really wonderful and very productive trip. Thank you for all the favs and comments on these images in this series. They mean a lot to me.
Truax, Saskatchewan, Canada
I wrote a blog post about my springtime Saskatchewan trip that has some behind-the-scenes pics and stories which you might enjoy.
I love photographing on the Canadian Prairies and I've been travelling there to do so since 2013. If you'd like to see my other Prairie images, feel free to take a look at the album.
At one time, grain elevators could be found every 8 to 10 miles along every railway line in western Canada. That allowed most farmers to make a round trip to an elevator to deliver and sell their grain with a horse and wagon in one day. From that elevator the grain would be shipped to ports on the Great Lakes or the west coast, across Canada and around the world. Grain elevators started appearing across the Prairies in the late 19th century, and the number of grain elevators peaked in 1938, when there were nearly 6,000 primary (country) elevators in the Prairie provinces. Many factors led to the decline of the primary elevator: the Depression, increased mechanization, improved roads for transportation, rural depopulation, the closing of branch lines of the railway and the buying out or merging of the grain companies and the building of large, concrete grain terminals. In 2023 there were only around 400 country elevators left in Saskatchewan and only about 100 are still in use. Many of the old, wooden elevators have been destroyed – burned down, struck by lightning, demolished - but some of them still remain - weathered but beautiful and stalwart.

Since I need some winter images for a proper photo calendar i looked for something worth capturing during those days when we had at least a little bit of snow.
Actually the amount of snow we had wasn’t even enough to cover the grass on this hill, so I cloned out hundreds of grass blades, which was great fun.
Not.

It has been a while since I photographed frogs and had forgotten how wet you can get. With 6°C, and just a thin fleece, I got pretty cold within no time and had to stop my frog pursuit... I will return. In this particular pond in the middle of an old forest I just saw these Common Frogs (Rana temporaria) (and pretty happy with that), but hope to find a few Moor Frogs soon as well.
Single Exposure, Aztec, New Mexico. 24 mm, f 1.6, ISO 6400, 15 sec.

Thanks for all the kind support! Hope you enjoy! A big thank you to the wonderful Flickr family. It's a pleasure to post here. Cheers, Wayne

The Blavatnik School of Government is an impressive building, full of sweeping curves that on every level. Even with the wide angle Nikon 14-24 on it's hard to get everything it, so I took the 15 shot panorama that hopefully gives some idea of the size and scale of the place.

Sometimes it just takes time. The last time I photographed Common Redpolls (Carduelis flammea) in the snow dates back to 2012. I can simply not believe it.
Was out to photograph Shore Larks (Eremophila alpestris) at a former landfill in the area of Espoo, Finland. That landfill is nowadays a hilly area with the right vegetation and thus food sources for Shore Larks but also for Common- and Arctic Redpolls. There is currently lots of snow and the conditions are in my opinion very photogenic. Was able to kill two birds with one stone. Happy Days.
