My church is undergoing a website redesign, and I have been asked to create the graphics for said website. I posted a previous version of this here, and I also tried out a blue version. This is my least favorite of all the mock-ups (and no, I have not done the logo redesign yet). The other two mock-ups can be found here and here. If you have some time, please let me know what you like and dislike about each!

Panorama of the Great Court at the British Museum, designed by Lord Foster.

Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer and Guy Berliner enjoying the new Magnum Bar at the Supreme Court.

Returning from Germany’s eastern front in 1918, Menne Spiegel is decorated with the Iron Cross. Twenty-five years later, living as a popular horse merchant in Westphalia, he’s branded with a different insignia: the Star of David. On the eve of a mass deportation of Jews, Spiegel seeks out his old comrade Heinrich Aschoff, a Catholic farmer with a conscience, who instantly agrees to shelter Spiegel’s wife Marga and daughter Karen at his farm despite the risk to his own family. Based on the real Marga Spiegel’s best-selling memoir, Saviors in the Night relates the extraordinary story of the two families’ perilous years together, and with a forthrightness befitting the salt-of-the-earth Aschoff family (later recognized as “Righteous Among the Nations” by Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial for their death-defying act of compassion). Dutch director Ludi Boeken (Other Face of Terror, SFJFF 1986) captures the characters’ vulnerability as they endeavor to escape detection—rarely has a handheld camera felt more appropriate in a historical drama where a child’s thoughtless remark might mean a death sentence. The Aschoffs’ rural village isn’t as malignant as the one in Michael Haneke’s The White Ribbon, but the good deeds of the few are undermined by neighbors’ whispers and resentment. Moreover, family bonds are tested, as the Aschoffs must justify their act of courage to a daughter whose friends have joined the Hitler Youth and a son who is fighting on the front. With outstanding performances and a riveting conclusion, Saviors in the Night delivers a powerful message about the price—and rewards—of altruism. This is an extraordinary feature film that powerfully records one memorable instance of moral courage under desperate conditions.—Max Goldberg

Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence (Live in Berlin)

Depeche Mode are an English electronic band that formed in 1980 in Basildon, Essex. The group consists of founders Dave Gahan (lead vocals, occasional songwriter since 2005), Martin Gore (guitar, keyboards, vocals, main songwriter since 1982), and Andy Fletcher (keyboards, bass guitar). Depeche Mode released their debut album Speak & Spell in 1981, bringing the band onto the British new wave scene. Original band member Vince Clarke (keyboards, guitar, main songwriter from 1980 to 1981), left the band after the release of the album, leaving the band as a trio to record A Broken Frame, released the following year. Gore took over the lead songwriting duties and, later in 1982, Alan Wilder (keyboards, drums, bass guitar, occasional songwriter) officially joined the band to fill Clarke's spot, establishing a line up that would continue for the next 13 years. Depeche Mode have been a trio again since 1995, when Wilder left.

In the beginning, AK Fest was a way for Audiokarma members to share their passion for music and audition new systems from local vendors. Over the years the Fest has grown by leaps and bounds, as word of mouth has spread the positive vibe AK Fest has. Even with greater numbers of visitors, a more extensive list of exhibitors, a broader range of music and equipment, AK Fest still has the open arms sense of community, friendship and a passion for sharing our love of music and the equipment we use on our travels down the many roads to audio nirvana.

Telegram (1997)

I wouldn't say I'm breaking the rules of my own website, but I'm going to bend them here a little bit. When I write about a record, I only write about new records that I've bought recently. I don't go diving into the archives because I'm not really documenting my entire collection, only the new things I am adding to it. I've had a copy of this Him Kerosene album since the late 90's, so it's not really new. But I just bought a second copy. I'll use that as an excuse to write about this record because more people deserve to hear it.

Start. Stop. is one of my top ten favorite records of all time. I've said numerous times that I think Him Kerosene are the most under appreciated band that have ever walked the planet. In a perfect world, they would have been one of the most famous bands there was, but they just ended up being something of an obscurity. This album was released on Telegram records, a subsidiary of Warner in Sweden. From what I can gather, it was released and then quietly faded away. I'm not sure if it ended up being the equivalent of a Fig Dish caliber used bin band over in Sweden, but these CD's didn't really make it to America.

I received my original copy from Magnus, the drummer from the band Starmarket and the guy who ran a record label called Chalk Sounds for a while. I have just cherished this record ever since. I never see copies come up, so when one recently appeared on Discogs from a seller in France, I grabbed it. That's how important this record is to me, I just felt that I had to have a back up copy in case something ever happened to my original.

The music on this little silver disc is some of the best I have ever heard. Giant, dynamic, insane guitar work highlights Him Kerosene. They have an incredible way of weaving a tapestry of noisy riffs out of two amazingly talented guitarists. The rhythm section is a powerful force, keeping the band grounded while the guitar chaos is swirling around them. In that regard I see some similarities to how The Pixies operated, but I wouldn't say the two bands sound alike.

The vocals on this album are what elevate it to the highs it reaches. Niklas Quintana's higher pitched, pissed-off-Doug-Martsch sounding voice, layered on top of this storm of music is simply a perfect combination. Just listen to a few moments of "Untied" or "Neutrino" or "Whatever Gets You By." Start. Stop. is an absolute classic. It is one of the best records ever released in the history of mankind and it is the number one record that I'm begging someone, anyone to rerelease on vinyl. It deserves so much more than to just be a forgotten album, hiding in a used CD section in some forgotten record store in Europe. This is an album that should be celebrated.

In a tragic turn of events, I can't find most of the songs on this album streaming anywhere online. Only "Whatever Gets You By." It's a tremendous song, but I don't think it is representative of the fast paced energy of the rest of the album. It's the closer to this album's ballad, if you could use that word to describe any song on this record. It does look like the album is available on iTunes and some other online download services, so if you can't find a copy of the record anywhere, it's certainly worth a download. You wouldn't find me willing to pay for an electronic version of an album often, but this is one time that I would if there were no other option.

Gallery show by visiting professors Lisa Hsieh and Jr-Gang Chi of ar-ch. (Website is totally "under construction," link is provided for posterity.) I'm interested in their work; they've been exploring themes of transformation and change in a "playful" mode that recalls Hejduk's masques, minus the spooky mystic qualities. Their "Read Or Die" studio in Spring 09 involved students designing custom personal contraptions for anime characters; the contraptions then got scaled up or adapted to produce the building.

In fact, their work alternates back and forth between the transformable prosthetic/toy object as extension of the body (as in the "Read or Die" projects, or Chi's earlier studio projects featuring animal-based contraptions) and the transforming environment - see for example Motile Space (video link).

The "Toy Talk" show splits the difference between these poles - the objects are furniture/prosthetic sized but they operate as an environment; the gallery visitor doesn't act to transform them but instead the creators sneak in during the night and move the toys around, changing their positions and their individual configurations. This video, starring Hsieh, gives you a good sense of the "toys" and their construction/nature.

So on one level it's a kind of cutesy, "The toys are coming to life!" thing. But I remain really interested in the marriage of "play" and "transformable stuff" as themes; I think theirs is work to watch in the future.

I had more to say about all that but I sort of lost it in the shuffle, sorry...

I used to have my photos free for blogging. But more and more I see websites that use my photos without giving a possibility to click on my photo come to Flickr. And my name isn´t told either. That is, they use my photos, as if they were their own ones.

I had supposed, Flickr would prevent such behavior, but now I don´t know, if Flickr doesn´t do this or if these sites are a kind of thief sites.

The site above I discovered by checking my Flickr Stats. They had taken several of my photos at Flickr in the way described above. I asked them to remove my photos immeditately, and they did so ... Moreover they deleted their total photo gallery - for good purpose, I think.

I was lucky in that cruisers who invited me over for dinner on Tuesday night (partly to introduce me to a Japanese singlehander also headed to French Polynesia on a 10-yr circumnavigation) offered to help with my re-fuelling on Wednesday. We went later to 'El Casa de Las Sirenas' to hear Jose Luis Cobo (whose CD I've been playing on 'Nereida' for the last 2 years since the Guitar Fest of '05) and others playing. As a result, I took Jose Luis and his wife & son for a 'sail' around the bay here today

(Thursday) & had a very pleasant afternoon, as a short rest from preparing the boat for my forthcoming passages.

It's also been very time-consuming catching up with missing parcels and items sent out from England which missed me in San Diego - I still don't have the Musto outer gear nor the Navtex unit/antenna - both sent as I was leaving the States for Mexico. Neither got to Vancouver in time for a friend to bring down to me on a visit here recently ... Australia, maybe??

I'm hoping the 'Migracion' lady is helpful here tomorrow when I go to check out personally from Mexico before heading to the 'Capitania' to clear 'Nereida' out - I've been hearing that she can make things difficult....
