I was lucky in that cruisers who invited me over for dinner on Tuesday night (partly to introduce me to a Japanese singlehander also headed to French Polynesia on a 10-yr circumnavigation) offered to help with my re-fuelling on Wednesday. We went later to 'El Casa de Las Sirenas' to hear Jose Luis Cobo (whose CD I've been playing on 'Nereida' for the last 2 years since the Guitar Fest of '05) and others playing. As a result, I took Jose Luis and his wife & son for a 'sail' around the bay here today
(Thursday) & had a very pleasant afternoon, as a short rest from preparing the boat for my forthcoming passages.
It's also been very time-consuming catching up with missing parcels and items sent out from England which missed me in San Diego - I still don't have the Musto outer gear nor the Navtex unit/antenna - both sent as I was leaving the States for Mexico. Neither got to Vancouver in time for a friend to bring down to me on a visit here recently ... Australia, maybe??
I'm hoping the 'Migracion' lady is helpful here tomorrow when I go to check out personally from Mexico before heading to the 'Capitania' to clear 'Nereida' out - I've been hearing that she can make things difficult....

Ok, so I've been extremely slack at uploading pics on flickr lately, but my excuse is that I have been distracted setting up a website for my photos here at www.lookingglassphotography.com.au.
I did quite a bit of research on all the companies out there offering a portal to help photographers display their works and make them available for sale, and I must say that "smugmug" came out on top.
It's very different to flickr in that it is much more of a photo portal you can direct people to than a social community such as flickr. The great thing is that they have a lot of tools at your disposal to present your photos within a more aesthetic environment which is completely customisable if you're willing to pull your hair out and tackle the quagmire that is CSS and Javascript (well, to me anyway!)
There's some cool stuff such as flash intro slideshows, unlimited photo size uploads (compared to 10MB per photo in flickr), custom watermarking, right-click image download protection, customisable galleries with full screen slideshows, customisable and trackable emails, and inbuilt pricing structures that make it easy to customise.
The other nice thing is that despite paying USD$149.00 for the pro account, all users get $10 off their next year's subscription if they refer someone, and the friend who they refer get $5 off their subscription...there are quite a few people who have said that they don't even need to pay for their subscriptions for the next few years thanks to this nice little system. The coolest thing though is that they have developed the code to optimise all smugmug users accounts on the iPhone which is totally sweeeeet:)

Oostkerke is a Belgian polder village and a municipality in the Flemish town of Damme West. Oostkerke is 1752 acres, has some 600 inhabitants. In 1974 Oostkerke voted the prettiest village in West Flanders.
Its history since the 12th century, intertwined with those of Lapscheure, Moerkerke and corners. These border areas and outposts of dams and bridges were frequently ravaged by floods. These were not the only disasters that the region under the spell did. The region was also frequently prey to armies that often a trail of arson and looting left. Because of these setbacks were many parts of the cultural heritage lost. It was not until the early 19th century that a certain calm descends on these villages.
During the two world wars, however, the region was again hit hard. W.O. I brought a long-term occupation but fortunately little or no destruction. W.O. II and in particular the period between the liberation and the eradication of the last German resistance was disastrous. The entire area was again put under water, many buildings were damaged or destroyed again, human lives were sacrificed. After 1945 they started rebuilding the churches, the castles and houses.
The name is undeniably linked to Monk Reason Oostkerke. It was the port that led to Oostkerke. Today, this hamlet is nothing to be found in the landscape. It was indeed destroyed by the construction of the Damme canal, the canal to Sluis.

De geschiedenis ervan is sinds de 12e eeuw verweven met die van Lapscheure, Moerkerke en Hoeke. Deze grensgebieden en voorposten van Damme en Brugge werden regelmatig geteisterd door overstromingen. Dit waren echter niet de enige rampen die de regio in de ban hielden. De streek ook viel ook regelmatig ten prooi aan legerbendes die vaak een spoor van brandstichtingen en plunderingen achterlieten. Door deze tegenslagen gingen vele delen van het kunstpatrimonium verloren. Het is pas in het begin van de 19e eeuw dat er een zekere rust over deze dorpen neerdaalt.
Tijdens de twee wereldoorlogen kreeg de streek het echter opnieuw hard te verduren. W.O. I bracht een langdurige bezetting maar gelukkig weinig of geen verwoestingen. W.O. II en in het bijzonder de periode tussen de bevrijding en de opruiming van de laatste Duitse weerstand was echter rampzalig. De ganse streek werd opnieuw onder water gezet, vele gebouwen werden weer beschadigd of vernield, mensenlevens werden opgeofferd. Na 1945 startte men met de heropbouw van de kerken, de kastelen en de woningen.
De naam Monnikerede is ontegensprekelijk verbonden met Oostkerke. Het was de haven die leidde naar Oostkerke. Tegenwoordig is van dit gehucht niets meer terug te vinden in het polderlandschap. Het werd immers tenietgedaan door de aanleg van de Damse Vaart, het kanaal naar Sluis.

Sint-Niklaas is a Belgian city and municipality located in the Flemish province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the city of Sint-Niklaas proper and the towns of Belsele, Nieuwkerken-Waas, and Sinaai.
Sint-Niklaas is the capital and major city of the Waasland region straddling the East Flanders and Antwerp provinces. The city is known for having the largest market square in Belgium.
Thirteenth-century origins
Although some traces of pre-Roman activity have been found on the territory of Sint-Niklaas, the regional centre during Roman times was neighbouring Waasmunster, better located on the river Durme. Belsele was already mentioned in a 9th century document. The history of Sint-Niklaas proper, however, starts in 1217, when the bishop of Tournai, following advice from the local clergy, founded a church to Saint Nicholas here. The new parish was to depend on the See of Tournai until the middle of the 16th century. Politically, however, it was part of the County of Flanders. The power of Flanders at that time favoured the quick economic development of the city, which became the administrative centre of the region in 1241. A document dated from 1248 records that Margaret II, Countess of Flanders, ceded additional territory to the parish of Sint-Niklaas with the proviso that it would remain bare, which explains the unusual size of the central market square today.

Left in a flat calm from San Diego Y.C. soon after 9pm on Wed21Feb. While still in protected water, I raised the mainsail - difficult to raise completely - looking up the mast by torchlight, I realized that the halyard was outside the lazyjacks (thought I'd been careful, as usual, to get that right!) - so down with the main, removed the shackle from the head of the sail - raise the mainsail again (had the boat going around in slow circles all this time!). Still not going up easily - why?
Out with the torch again - halyard now caught around a step high up near the mast top - lower the sail AGAIN & grab hold of the halyard - wave it about until it comes loose from the step & quickly take up on the halyard, raising the main - still a problem as it goes up! I decide to leave the main with two reefs in - since no wind anyway, the point of having the main up was to reduce rolling in the expected swell and just in cast some wind came up later in my passage. Made a mental note to check
raising the main once I'd arrived. Finally, all was OK - lucky no boat traffic around at that time in the darkness - so I finally got going out through the main channel seawards.
A very uneventful motoring passage, with almost no other boats seen and so I was able to get some catnaps (about 20-30 mins at a time). Early in the morning, I was able to make good use of my AIS input into my Nobeltec display - seeing two big, brightly-lit tankers well ahead, the AIS system told me that they were stationary (at anchor, in fact) so I was able to steer a course midway between them, safe in the knowledge that they weren't moving. The night air temperature was really low, as usual after
a clear sunny day, so I was happy to be warm & snug in my new Musto fleecy trousers and tops...!
Mike helped me in to my slip - not too much manoevring needed in a slight breeze - I'd arrived in Mexico!
The marina staff helped with getting my paperwork prepared ready for clearance in to the country and I jumped on my bike to go & clear in - got there about midday and was finished about an hour later ... not bad!
I then celebrated my arrival with a British couple I met while clearing in- fresh fish tacos at the local fish market were very tasty!
