Bill Albrecht, webmaster at New York National Guard headquarters, is presented New York's Conspicuous Service Medal for his work on the state's online capabilities and technologies, by Maj. Gen. Raymond Shields, the adjutant general of New York, during a ceremony at headquarters, Latham, New York, Aug. 19, 2021. Shields also presented Albrecht with his challenge coin.

The picture shows the GCR trackbed quite close to the way it would have looked just after completion, due to recent tree clearance work.
March anniversaries: The GCR London Extension opened on 15th March 1899. This station (along with the other small pattern stations other than those already closed) closed on 4th March 1963, 50 years ago.

Ian has been a member of the Rotary Club of Central Blue Mountains since 2003 and has served in many Club positions, including President 2006-2007. He is currently the Secretary, Facebook page manager and webmaster. Ian has served District 9690 on the Family of Rotary Committee, was District Trainer from 2009 to 2012/13 and Club Representative for the Committee of the Association. He was also an Assistant Governor for the Blue Mountains Zone. Ian is a charter faculty member of the Rotary Leadership Institute in District 9690. Trained as a facilitator and mediator, he has facilitated at the 2010 Australian Rotary Conference in Canberra, the 2010 D9690 Membership Seminar, and has designed the facilitation for the 2012 Australian Rotary Success Conference.
Ian has served in the Royal Australian Air Force full time and in the reserve since 1968, firstly as a radio technician and then as a navigator, mainly on transport aircraft. He has held command at all levels, including Commanding Officer of Number 37 Squadron, Officer Commanding Number 84 Wing and Commander of the Air Lift Group at RAAF Richmond. Along the way he managed to acquire an MBA and a Masters of Arts in Strategic Studies. He retired with the rank of Air Commodore in 2005 from the position of Chief of Staff at Headquarters Air Command. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1996 for his service at 37 Squadron.
Ian is involved with a number of ex-Service organisations, including the Defence Force Welfare Association, the Blue Mountains Branch of the Australian National Servicemen’s Association (of which he is patron), and the Remembrance Driveway Committee for the Hume Highway between Sydney and Canberra.
He is married to PDG Jennifer, who is a senior lawyer involved in alternate dispute resolution as an arbitrator and mediator, as well as being a board member of a number of Rotary Boards. PDG Jennifer is involved in Rotary at all levels, including delivering district, national and international training. Ian and Jennifer are Paul Harris Society members, Bequest members and Major Donors. They have two adult daughters; Gillian is married to Simon and has three terrific children, and Claire is a young diplomat who has just returned from her first post in Fiji. Both girls have been involved in various Rotary sponsored New Generations programs, including PACE, YEP, RYPEN and Rotaract.
Ian’s other interests include the grandkids (again), travel, scuba diving, flying, listening to music and bush walking.
WOW Announces Web Pro Community Challenge
San Francisco — November 17, 2008 —: The World Organization of Webmasters (WOW) announced today at Adobe MAX 2008 that it is heading up a Web Pro Community Challenge to benefit:
Child Family Health International (CFHI) is a leading non-governmental organization (NGO) placing health science students on global health education programs in Latin America, Africa, and India in ways that are socially responsible and financially just.
“The Web Pro Community Challenge is designed to test the artistic, creative, technical and business knowledge and skills of aspiring and practicing Web professionals while utilizing some of the best tools available, all in a peer environment and for a great charitable cause,” said Bill Cullifer, WOW’s Executive Director and Challenge organizer. “Adobe MAX is the annual event for Web professionals, and WOW’s thrilled to be a contributor,” said Cullifer.
“Adobe is excited to work with WOW to provide a way for the passionate community of web professionals to showcase their skills while helping non-profit organizations,” said Ted Patrick, group manager for developer relations at Adobe. “It’s a wonderful combination of technology hand-in-hand with philanthropy.”
The Web Pro Community Challenge is an opportunity for the international Web professional community to showcase their skills while giving something back to the global community by designing and developing a website for designated non-profit organizations. Participants will use a wide range of technologies, including Adobe Flash Platform software, such as Adobe® Flex™, Adobe Flash® and Adobe® AIR™ to build enhanced Web capabilities for both of these deserving organizations. The Web Pro Community Challenge is launching at the Adobe MAX conference but anyone around the world is eligible to participate.
“We’re ecstatic to be recipients of this year’s Web Pro Community Challenge. We hope that with an improved website, we will be able to place more students in underserved communities around the world,” said Steve Schmidbauer, Executive Director of CFHI. “On behalf of the health science students and the communities we work with in developing countries, I’d like to thank the WOW organization and Adobe for making this site redesign possible.”
The Web Pro Community Challenge launches at Adobe MAX 2008 in San Francisco and then calls on practicing Web professionals from around the globe who have interest in contributing their services for charity to participate. The WOW organization will podcast the process with interviews of the Web professional experts, the participants, and the selected non-profit charity selected so others can use these resources in a classroom setting as a teaching tool.
“When I first clicked on the webprochallenge.org website and read the list of items the contestants were to be tested on, I was exceptionally pleased. The contestants are required to conduct the same steps that they would for an organization in the "real world". In addition, the time the contest covers, three months, is realistic.
And, since the contestants produce a useful, high-quality product for a not-for-profit organization that is participating in the contest, there is a win-win-win situation for all involved: the teams, their teachers or supervisors, and the not-for-profit organization.
