Community technology is great. It is incredibly refreshing to be reminded on a daily basis that, as a developer and technologist, I don't know crap about how everyday people view and use technology.
Two weeks ago I was in Washington, DC for the CTCnet Conference. While there I helped John Lorance of CompuMentor give a presentation on how Community Technology Centers and nonprofit orgaizations can use Web 2.0 services and tools like Flickr, del.icio.us,, wikis, mapping, et cetera to improve their programs and better fulfill their missions.
At the end we opened the floor to questions and comments. An attendee stood up and said that he had always been worried that with computers and machines growing ever smarter and more powerful, one day they would overthrow mankind. But after seeing these new Web 2.0 tools, he is relieved that humans will always stay one step ahead of the machines. Hallelujah.
I made this drawing using Inkscape, an awesome open source illustration program.
These thing really astound me. Just the perfect, and the work. Spider are really magnificent creatures.
I have to be honest I didn't spot the caterpillar when I was looking for a web today, so that was a bonus when I clicked and zoomed! HWW

It's easy to fall into the web of consumerism around the holidays. New camera this, new game system that. The black Friday madness is always growing. Just remember to keep your center and keep in mind what's truly important in your life. P. S. See the spider?

Female Nursery Web Spiders (Pisaura mirabilis) produce very large egg sacs, which they carry around beneath their body. When the time for the spiderlings to emerge approaches, the female deposits the egg sac on a leaf and spins a protective silk ‘nursery web’ around it. She then opens the egg sac slightly, and stands guard until the spiderlings emerge.
I got home this afternoon and noticed an industrious little spider had built this over night. The sun was hitting it just right, but the camera couldn't really pick it up that clearly. A little mist from the hose and all of a sudden I had a very cool web to shoot.

Silence is exhilarating at first - as noise is - but there is a sweetness to silence outlasting exhilaration, akin to the sweetness of listening and the velvet of sleep. ~Edward Hoagland

Yesterday was a misty, murky day and we ended up looking for spider's webs at Tatton Park gardens! It was such a dull day, that I ended up taking these shots at ISO 3200 - so while this isn't perfect, I was very pleased to get some usable shots!
Saw this big cobweb and spider in the garden, just had to go inside to get my camera and a black card to use as the background didnt want to get it too close though otherwise would have broke the cobweb.
My first attempt with a black ground so im pleased with how it came out....Hope you like it also :)
