It is so sad to see some people struggling in life because their profession has gone obsolete...

Brand for watchmaker tools.

Hello my friends.

Happy weekend dear friends!!!

Born to the families of a goldsmith and watchmaker, the young Juan Miró was drawn towards the arts community that was gathering in Montparnasse and in 1920 moved to Paris, France. There, under the influence of the poets and writers, he developed his unique style: organic forms and flattened picture planes drawn with a sharp line. Generally thought of as a Surrealist because of his interest in automatism and the use of sexual symbols (for example, ovoids with wavy lines emanating from them), Miró’s style was influenced in varying degrees by Surrealism.

Outdoor Watchmaker

ANH 154 seen in town during the 2021 Northampton Bus Rally, 19th September 2021.

I might have missed this beautiful Timepiece if I hadnt looked up high on the gable wall of a Watchmaker's shop in the town of Williamstad, on the Caribbean island of Curacao.

This unusual timepiece dates back to the 18th. Century and is still in working order. The Bells ring on the hour.

I liked the shadows thrown by the strong sunshine.

William Alfred Cocks of Ryton [1892-1971]

Here are some boys in uniform, with their officers at the back, from the Boys Club that Cocks' ran from his own home. nd [1910]

William A Cocks of 18, St Mary's Terrace, Ryton, was a well known local watch and clock maker and a keen amateur archaeologist and photographer. His father, John Cocks was a Newcastle Bank official who wrote for the Hexham Courant as "Old Cross" for many years, and was closely involved with Ryton Congregational Church. William Cocks was also probably a member of the Church and recorded its activities.

VITRINE DE NUIT.

C'est la vitrine d'un horloger. La journée il n'y a qu'une seule montre exposée. Le soir (la nuit) la montre est mise au coffre fort, faut pas tenter le diable... 👹

NIGHT-TIME SHOP WINDOW.

It's a watchmaker's shop window. During the day there is only one watch on display. In the evening (at night) the watch is put in the safe, so don't tempt the devil... 👹

A (still working) Omega Grand Prix 1900 made in 1910 or so which to the best of my knowledge was originally purchased by my great-grandfather who later passed it on to his son who gave it to my late father who gave it to me when I got married.

On the face of the watch reads "Em. Söderlund UPSALA JMP" which refers to watchmaker Em. Söderlund Ur & Optik AB.

The shop had as far as I can tell the address "Kungsängsgatan 11" in Uppsala, Sweden.

Pictured above is what seems to be a completely innocuous example of the common cardinal. I can assure you that this seemingly innocent bird possesses vocal abilities that would rival the most powerful operatic superstar and sense for timekeeping that would shame an obsessive-compulsive Swiss watchmaker.

This would-be rooster can be found perched inches from my bedroom window, singing his little heart out, at precisely 6:00 a.m., every, single, morning. Now, some of you might ask: “Why do you have a bird feeder? It will only encourage him.” And I would mention that it makes no difference, my neighbourhood contains more bird feeders per square meter than any other place on earth. No seed-eating creature on my street has ever even dreamt of foraging for food.

This particular bourgeois bird was photographed using my GoPro camera, which I set to time-lapse mode and left attached to the feeder. While in operation the camera also managed to capture a few goldfinches.

On completely unrelated note, with voting day in Canada drawing near I still need to decide whom to vote for. While I’m mostly undecided, if I want to cast my ballot for the candidate possessing the best photographic skills I can safely rule out this guy.

By John Bennie Wilson, 1888-89. Tall galleried Gothic nave-and-aisles church on corner site with 5-stage tower to E; octagonal gallery stair turret to W; later church hall and rooms at rear; modern halls to N. Squared and snecked bull-faced red Mauchline sandstone; polished sandstone dressings. Architraved cill and string courses; stepped buttresses with trefoil-headed detailing centred in apex; raised, polished eaves course. Polished quoins; polished long and short surrounds to chamfered openings. Predominantly trefoil-headed windows; sandstone mullions chamfered cills. Single storey L-plan hall to rear; squared and snecked stugged red sandstone; polished dressings; shouldered-arched surrounds to openings.

Originally built for the Troon United Presbyterian Church of Scotland. The name "St Meddan's" was not used until 1901 when, following the merger of the United Presbyterian and the Free Churches, the congregation became known as the "St Meddan's Street United Free Church". The union of the Church of Scotland with the United Free Church in 1929, and the adoption of parish boundaries in 1932, resulted in the present name. The clock is thought to date back to 1751 when it was commissioned by Glasgow University as part of their tercentenary celebrations. A watchmaker, Andrew Dickie, built the clock, which was housed in a quadrangle in the Old College building in Glasgow's High Street, for £720 Scots. When the University moved to its present site at Gilmorehill in 1871, the old buildings were demolished and the clock was subsequently purchased for the Portland Church building in Troon (now demolished). With the opening of a new church for the Portland congregation in 1914, the clock was gifted to St Meddan's, as the Portland church had no spire and St Meddan's, although in possession of a spire, had no clock.

John Bennie Wilson (c.1848 - 1923) appears to have specialised in church design - his other projects including Stockwell Free Church, Pollockshields, the UP Church, Ayr and Cathcart Free Church, Glasgow. Articled to John Honeyman, he went on to assist both David Thomson and John Burnet before establishing an independent practice in 1878. In 1910 he became president of the Glasgow Institute of Architects and that same year, was representative of the body on the RIBA Co's work. With its impressive tower and broached spire, it is the tallest church in Troon and thereby, one of the town's most prominent landmarks.

The watchmaker. As you should NOT do it :-)

Some of the watches I found are looking like brandnew, altough the opposite is true. This is a Stopwatch, still more or less in working order. Nice mechanics...

I'm amazed by the designs of animals. How perfect and beneficial is it that a Long-tailed Weasel is white in winter and various shades of brown in summer. I've heard it said that you can't admire the intricacies of a watch without recognizing the watchmaker. Voltaire said, "The world embarrasses me, and I cannot dream that this watch exists and has no watchmaker."

I'm considering asking the Watchmaker if I can get a firmware upgrade so my winter hair can turn brown again in the spring.

Our Daily Challenge: This Came All the Way From.......Switzerland

2/100X 2021

I have two pockets watches from my father. This one is made by Hamilton, a Swiss watchmaker. Sadly I do not know where my dad originally acquired this one. It was more than likely inherited from a relative or close family friend.I was drawn to this watch as my subject for the particular challenge as today is the seventh anniversary of my Dad’s death. Anniversary dates draw us into the memories and remind us of the loss. I miss you, dad, and am thinking of you today.

Background :

In 1853, Charles-Félicien Tissot and his son Charles-Emile Tissot created the Tissot watch company. Their driving force for the company was innovative spirit and a distinctive taste for skilled craftsmanship. Since then, the Tissot watch company has located its headquarters in Le Locle. Throughout its history, Tissot watches created products that never fail to attract attention, both by watch aficionados and the general public. Whether in the technology of its movements, in the research for special materials or in the very functions of the watch itself, its engineers and watchmakers developed watches that were pioneers of their kind.

"L'horloge fleurie" (or "flower ock")- with its diameter of 5 metres Geneva's "L'horloge fleurie" was created in 1955 as a symbol of the city's watchmakers and dedication to nature. Its second hand is the longest in the world at 2.50 meters. It is situated at the western edge of the Jardin Anglais. Usually, around 6500 flowers and shrubs are used as decoration for this clock. The decoration is changed each time the seasons of the year change

Loreta is a pilgrimage destination in Hradčany, a district of Prague, Czech Republic. It consists of a cloister, the church of the Lord’s Birth, the Santa Casa and a clock tower with a famous chime.

Construction started in 1626 and the Holy Hut was blessed on 25 March 1631. The architect was the Italian Giovanni Orsi, and the project was financed by Kateřina Benigna, a noblewoman of the Lobkowicz family. Fifty years later the place of pilgrimage was surrounded by cloisters, to which an upper storey was added after 1740 by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer.[1] The baroque facade was designed by the architects Christoph Dientzenhofer and Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer, and added at the beginning of the 18th century.

The chapel is most known for its peal, heard since August 15, 1695. It was constructed during 1694 by watchmaker Peter Neumann from thirty smaller and larger bells.

Today the building also houses a large collection of liturgical tools, mainly monstrances. Exhibitions are occasionally held on the first floor of the cloister.

Inspired by the theme Timepieces for the Macro Mondays Group.

Inscribed "Joh. Melchior Wetschgi, Augsburg, 1726", this device is for cutting gears with different numbers of teeth. The work was mounted on the vertical mandrel in the center; to cut a gear tooth, the cutter wheel mounted on the horizontal shaft, rotated by a belt attached to the brass pulley, was advanced into the blank using the big windup key, and then the disk was advanced to the next index hole to cut the next tooth. At about 5:00 you can see stamped into the disk the number of teeth in each ring of holes. Appears to be the same animal shown at digital.deutsches-museum.de/en/digital-catalogue/collecti...; the description there reads "Gear cutting machine by Johann Melchior Wetschgi: The hand-operated gear cutting machine, built without a tripod, allowed the watchmaker to quickly make gears of various diameters."

The Grassy building is at the beginning of the Gran Vía de Madrid (Spain). It was one of the first built upon completion of the first section of the avenue.

It is located near Alcala Street, right next to the Metropolis Building, dividing the passage between the street Caballero de Gracia and Gran Via. It consists of two separate houses in a triangular plant, both connected by a lobby located on the ground floor. The name of the building is due to the establishment in 1952 did the watchmaker Alejandro Grassy on the ground floor.

At the beginning of the XXI century Rolex ad house (a golden crown) it stands out. From this same time the building houses a museum dedicated to watchmaking.

photo taken in Doha Souq Waqif,6 am. The souq is noted for selling traditional garments, spices, handicrafts, and souvenirs. t is also home to dozens of restaurants and Shisha lounges. Although it dates back at least a hundred years, it was renovated in 2006 to conserve its traditional Qatari architectural style.

If it can be said to play the role of watchmaker in nature, it is the blind watchmaker.

“Religions are, by definition, metaphors, after all: God is a dream, a hope, a woman, an ironist, a father, a city, a house of many rooms, a watchmaker who left his prize chronometer in the desert, someone who loves you—even, perhaps, against all evidence, a celestial being whose only interest is to make sure your football team, army, business, or marriage thrives, prospers, and triumphs over all opposition. Religions are places to stand and look and act, vantage points from which to view the world. So none of this is happening. Such things could not occur. Never a word of it is literally true.”

Behind time goes a whole world of mechanism which needs elaborate craftsmanship to produce and maintain... This is nr. 10 in the series "A Watchmakers Inheritance"

'every year is getting shorter

never seem to find the time'

Personal note

When I first decided I was going to this series I new i would need to get some reference shots of the location just to get an idea of what gear i would use. While I was looking around the locations David showed me this gigantic intertior that he took out of a famous cathedral in downtown Toronto. I than decided this needed to be shot.

During the shoot David was very co-opertive and helped with a good deal of the it .He supplied me with a black back drop that made a huge difference and had many ideas to make the shoot more intreresting. overall very succesful im my oppinion and i'm looking forward to my next project.

technical note

In the middle of the shoot David decided to actually go in the interior of the structure wich proved to be a very good idea. I than switched to the 55-110 f4.5 Mamiya and than I had to tweak my lighting again. shooting into C1 and final post in Photoshop CS4

Installed in 1392, the Wells Clock face is the oldest in the world. The original motor mechanism was replaced in 1882, (but the original is still displayed and operated in the Science Museum, London.)

For 80 years, members of the Fisher Family (Jewellers and Watchmakers) were responsible for winding the Wells Clock. They had to climb 50 steps three times a week to the cathedral's gallery to wind up three sets of weights. When Paul Fisher aged 63 retired in 2010, an electric mechanism was added, but the family firm still carry out maintenance.

The clock features figures of two knights and two Saracens who go around in a circle in a jousting tournament every 15 minutes.

As well as the inside clock shown here, the same mechanism powers an outside clock.

There are clocks everywhere in LCDF. It's a town of watchmakers.

After the Nazis invaded the Netherlands, a Dutch watchmaker named Corrie ten Boom and her family built a secret room in their home to protect Jews until they could be transported to safety

In just four years, the ten Boom family helped rescue over 800 people.

Though ten Boom was arrested by the Nazis in 1944 — and placed in a concentration camp as punishment — she narrowly avoided being sent to the gas chambers and was released before World War II ended. Years later in 1971, she published a book about her experiences called "The Hiding Place" and began traveling all over the world to give lectures on the power of forgiveness. But then at one of her talks, a former Nazi guard who worked at the same camp that she was detained in approached her to ask for her forgiveness. And she decided to give it to him.
