You've seen my Dad's old wristwatch before: back in November 2022 for (h)our (please forgive the silly play on words) "Vintage" theme (please check the first comment). Back then, I had paired it with my Mom's old thread counter, this time, I've photographed the watch on its own.
Since I thought it would look more interesting with some motion blur on the seconds hand, I decided to give the in-camera "Live ND Filter" another try. The Live ND Filter is great fun and
very useful if you want to take a long exposure shot in bright conditions but have forgotten to bring a real ND filter along. I believe that the camera takes numerous images in a very fast succession and combines them automatically in-camera. It only works in M mode, so it's not a totally automated process because your manual settings will affect the final result. On the E-M1III, you can go up to ND 32, the newer OM-1 even gives you an ND 64 simulation, but the E-M1III is my macro cam, and ND 64 would have been too much for my purpose (even ND 32 was because it blurred the seconds hand out almost completely). But ND 16 created a nice, "fan-like" effect, so I decided to stick to it. It still was a little tricky to find the best camera and seconds hand position, so I took quite a few shots, but in the end, I even had three options to choose from, so I consider this a success ;)
The font/style used for the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock indices is very typical of the 1960s (which is also the decade my Mom gave this watch to my Dad as an engagement gift). The watch brand is "Primato", a long-closed manufacturer from Germany's "gold town" Pforzheim (a nickname Pforzheim acquired because quite many jewellery manufacturers and goldsmiths reside there). Recently, U.S. watchmaker Timex has reissued a hand-wound 34mm "Marlin" watch that uses a similar font for the 12, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 hour markers. Just in case you were interested ;)

Painted in 1998, this fresco recalls the industrial past of the city of Angoulême (capital of the manufacture of cigarette paper in France in the 20th century). The image represents the cogs of time that were initially heavy and industrial at the time of the Nile paper mills, which become as light as those of a watchmaker. It revives collective memory, illustrated by the iconic poster "I only smoke the Nile", a famous advertisement for a stationery in Angoulême. Artist François Schuiten added a clock, which later inspired him to design the gears because there had once been a watchmaker at this precise location.
After more than 100 years in Miss Ryerson's personal library, I managed to get the famous french book "Letters from My Windmill " by Alphonse Daudet back to France three years ago.
The officer's watch was made in 1912 by the second oldest and most prestigious Swiss watchmaker Favre Leuba.
Emily's father was swept away by the ocean but great accomplishments must survive forever.

Nearly didn’t take on this challenge as it breaks the grid in my photostream!
Little side story to this shot. The frame for this composition is a compartment in a letterpress drawer that is usually slotted in a dusty corner of our porch. I set up the shot (in low-light naturally) and arranged the watch parts and cogs in one of the wider compartments composing in the viewfinder. Only to flinch two seconds later as a massive (giant in macro) spider hauled itself onto the watch from the adjoining, dark compartment. Raised my heart rate a few beats!

Extra! Extra! Read all about it, the vintage watch in a miracle cure...
I had two possible subjects for "Vintage", a brass thread counting glass that my mom (magrit k.) got during her dressmaker apprenticeship, and an automatic wristwatch that had belonged to my father. The plan was to combine these two items. I placed the thread counter's magnifying glass over the date, and while I was checking out different positions of thread counter, watch, and camera, all of a sudden the seconds hand appeared on my camera's display. Now you might think that this is nothing special, the seconds hand of a watch does move, doesn't it? Well, this one didn't. For the past 15 or so years, it didn't move an inch. I've been wearing this watch nonstop for many years after my father died, and I had it repaired several times, but at one point it stopped working, and the watchmaker told me that the movement was finally beyond repair. And now the seconds hand started moving out of nowhere. You can tell that I was surprised. Even shocked a little when the watch started working again all of a sudden. Immediately, The Who's song "Miracle Cure" from Tommy popped up in my head, hence the title ;) So what I will do next is carry the watch to a watchmaker and have it cleaned and checked. I still can't believe it ;)
Technically, this is one single shot. I had focused on the dial, through the thread counter's magnifying glass, which explains the distortion of the dial. The main focus is, of course, on the magnificent seconds hand ;) The frame around the dial is the brass thread counter; the manufacturer was "Hostmann-Steinberg" which is the blurred lettering that you can see. Processed in DXO PL6, Lightroom, and a variety of Nik Collection filters.

I don't post MM outtakes often anymore, but this time it had been a really difficult choice between two images, and I also didn't want this image to end up in a permanent hard drive slumber. So here is MM choice No 2 that simply didn't make it to the group's pool because it looks a little weird (I like it weird, though), and not as elegant as my official upload. Most of the weirdness here probably derives from the fact that I had taken some photos with the watch placed upside down (and rotated this one to the left twice in LR) because it was easier to get a clear image of the 12 and the moving cursor at the same time this way.
Some of you may know that my Dad's watch had officially been declared "out of order for good" by a watchmaker many years ago and that it had miraculously started to work again when I photographed it for our November 2022 theme "Vintage". Well, I'm happy to say that it still runs happily and steadily, and this so much so that it runs really fast because it apparently always likes to be ahead of (the correct) time – but that doesn't matter at all as long as it keeps working ;)
What surprisingly also still works, is the lume on the hour and minute hand, even if it only glows for a few seconds after being activated by a strong light source. In this image, however, the lume glows courtesy of a few Lightroom sliders ("Lightlume") because it had not even crossed my mind to activate the lume during my MM Keepsake photo shoot. To make it look glowing, I masked the lume part, increased the whites, and tweaked the tone in the white balance menu. The fan-like effect on the moving second hand once again is a result of using the in-camera Live ND filter. And the colourful texture in the upper left corner is the Nato strap I keep the watch on. The watch has an unusual 19mm lug width and curved spring bars on top of that, and an 18mm Nato strap was the easiest way to fit it with a fresh-looking new strap (ordered from Esprit Nato in Paris because that's the only store that offers almost all the different colours and patterns a Nato strap can have with gold hardware).

When the pocket watch stops, wind it carefully with the small wheel above the 12 so that it indicates the time again. If you pull it too far, the spring in the movement tears and it has to be repaired. Meanwhile, it's an expensive pleasure.
Once a year, it is cleaned and maintained by a watchmaker.
With my wristwatch only the battery needs to be replaced, voila it runs fine until the next change.
For the presentation of my watches I have draped them on my Backrool Orange (a piece of sports equipment).

Die Entwicklung der Uhren, hat sich von der Taschenuhr meines Großvaters mit einem sehr schönen Uhrwerk, das täglich aufgezogen werden muss, hin zu den mit einer Batterie versehenden Uhr entwickelt.
Wenn die Taschenuhr stehen bleibt wird sie mit dem Rädchen, oberhalb der 12, vorsichtig aufgezogen damit sie die Zeit wieder anzeigt. Zieht man sie zu weit auf, reißt die Feder im Uhrwerk und sie muss zur Reparatur. Ein inzwischen teures Vergnügen.
Einmal im Jahr wird sie von einem Uhrmacher gesäubert und gewartet.
Bei meiner Armbanduhr muss nur die Batterie ausgewechselt werden, voila sie zeigt wieder die Zeit an.
Zur Präsentation meiner Uhren habe ich sie auf mein Backrool Orange (ein Sportgerät) drapiert.

Le développement des montres a évolué de la montre de poche de mon grand-père avec un beau mouvement qui doit être remonté tous les jours, à la montre avec une batterie.
Lorsque la montre de poche s'arrête, enroulez-la soigneusement avec la petite roue au-dessus du 12 pour qu'elle indique à nouveau l'heure. Si vous tirez trop loin, le ressort du mouvement se brisera et il devra être réparé. Un plaisir coûteux en attendant.
Une fois par an, il est nettoyé et entretenu par un horloger.
Avec ma montre, tout ce que j'ai à faire est de changer la pile, voila elle fonctionne bien jusqu' à la prochaine fois que je la change.
Je l'ai drapée sur mon Backrool Orange (un équipement de sport) pour présenter mes montres.

El desarrollo de los relojes ha evolucionado desde el reloj de bolsillo de mi abuelo con un bello movimiento que tiene que ser devanado diariamente, hasta el reloj con una pila.
Cuando el reloj de bolsillo se detiene, dé cuerda cuidadosamente con la rueda pequeña por encima de los 12 para que indique la hora de nuevo. Si lo tira demasiado, el resorte del movimiento se romperá y debe ser reparado. Un placer caro mientras tanto.
Una vez al año, es limpiada y mantenida por un relojero.
Con mi reloj, todo lo que tengo que hacer es cambiar la pila, voila funciona bien hasta la próxima vez que lo cambie.
Lo puse en mi Backrool Orange (un equipo deportivo) para presentar mis relojes.

O desenvolvimento de relógios evoluiu a partir do relógio de bolso do meu avô com um movimento bonito que deve ser rebobinado diariamente, ao relógio com uma bateria.
Quando o relógio de bolso parar, com cuidado, arraste a roda pequena acima do 12 para indicar o tempo novamente. Se você puxá-lo muito longe, a mola de movimento irá quebrar e deve ser reparada. Um entretanto caro.
Uma vez por ano, é limpo e mantido por um relojoeiro.
Com o meu relógio, tudo o que tenho a fazer é mudar a bateria, o voila funciona bem até a próxima vez que eu mudar.
Coloquei no meu Backrool Orange (uma equipe de esportes) para apresentar meus relógios.

Lo sviluppo degli orologi si è evoluto da orologio da tasca di mio nonno con un bel movimento che deve essere ricaricato ogni giorno, per l' orologio con una batteria.
Quando l' orologio da tasca si ferma, caricarlo con cautela con la rotellina sopra il 12 in modo che indichi nuovamente il tempo. Se lo si tira troppo in là, la molla nel movimento si romperà e deve essere riparata. Un piacere costoso nel frattempo.
Una volta all' anno, viene pulito e sottoposto a manutenzione da un orologiaio.
Con il mio orologio, tutto quello che devo fare è cambiare la batteria, voila funziona bene fino alla prossima volta che lo cambio.
L' ho drappeggiato sul mio Backrool Orange (un equipaggiamento sportivo) per presentare i miei orologi.

A beautiful pocket watch with a great movement. It has to be cared for, once a year a watchmaker takes care of this technical marvel... and it still runs, just needs to be wound up and it runs and runs and runs and runs, still!
Eine wunderschöne Taschenuhr mit einem tollen Uhrwerk. Sie muss gepflegt werden, einmal im Jahr kümmert sich ein Uhrmacher um dieses technische Wunderwerk. ...und sie läuft noch immer, muss nur aufgezogen werden und sie läuft und läuft und läuft, noch immer!!
Une belle montre de poche avec un grand mouvement. Il faut s'en occuper, une fois par an un horloger s'occupe de cette merveille technique.... et elle fonctionne encore, il suffit d'être remonté et elle tourne et tourne, tourne et tourne encore!
Un hermoso reloj de bolsillo con un gran movimiento. Hay que cuidarla, una vez al año un relojero se ocupa de esta maravilla técnica... y sigue funcionando, sólo hay que darle cuerda, ¡y corre, corre, corre y corre y corre, sigue corriendo!

My watchmaker has had my vintage Omega project for over 10 months and sent it back to me unfixed this month for lack of sourcing parts. Clutch wheel, canon pinion and hairspring. Luckily I was able to find this complete 1012 movement on ebay in good and running condition. It came all the way from Barcelona in 5 days. I reached out to my watchmaker this week and I sent everything back to him. I'm really looking forward to the finished product and hopefully it doesn't take too long.

Loreta is a pilgrimage destination in Hradčany, a district of Prague, Czech Republic. It consists of a cloister, the church of the Lord’s Birth, the Santa Casa and a clock tower with a famous chime.
Construction started in 1626 and the Holy Hut was blessed on 25 March 1631. The architect was the Italian Giovanni Orsi, and the project was financed by Kateřina Benigna, a noblewoman of the Lobkowicz family. Fifty years later the place of pilgrimage was surrounded by cloisters, to which an upper storey was added after 1740 by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer.[1] The baroque facade was designed by the architects Christoph Dientzenhofer and Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer, and added at the beginning of the 18th century.
The chapel is most known for its peal, heard since August 15, 1695. It was constructed during 1694 by watchmaker Peter Neumann from thirty smaller and larger bells.
Today the building also houses a large collection of liturgical tools, mainly monstrances. Exhibitions are occasionally held on the first floor of the cloister.
Neighbouring Loreta Square (Czech: Loretánské náměstí) is named after Loreta.

Léon L. Gallet (1832–1899), watchmaker, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and past family patriarch of the Gallet Watch Company of Switzerland,[1] is considered as one of the primary architects and founders of the 19th century industrialization of the Swiss watchmaking industry.
The son of Julien Gallet (1806–1849), who moved the family watchmaking business from Geneva, Switzerland, to the manufacturing district of La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1826, Léon L. Gallet was responsible for the creation of numerous Swiss and American watch brands.[2] Among these was the prestigious Fabrique Electa, which became the upscale line of the jewelry department at Macy’s Department store in New York City during the first quarter of the 20th century. Léon L. Gallet also established the brands National Park, Continental Watch Company, Jerome Park, Bridgeport, Eureka, Commodore, Union Square, and Lady Racine.[3] While the appearance and function of many of Gallet’s timepieces were tailored to the tastes of the American consumers, all of the movements in these watches were manufactured in Switzerland.
Léon Gallet played a philanthropic role in the business, cultural, and social life of his native home. As well as his prominent position as a member of both the legislature of Neuchâtel and the Council of La Chaux-de-Fonds, he was for many years, the president of the Société des Amis des Arts (Fine Arts Society) and Grand Master of the Free Masons. Together with Louis & Jules Courvoisier, Ernest Francillon of Longines, and Constant Girard-Perregaux, Léon Gallet founded the Société Intercantonale des Industries du Jura (Intercantonal Society for the Industries of the Jura Area) in 1876. The purpose of this organization was to assist in the promotion and distribution of products from Switzerland's Watch Valley while addressing the growing threat of competition in European markets from American watch manufacturers.
Upon his death in 1899, Léon Gallet bequeathed a sum of 43,000 Swiss Francs (today equivalent to 1,000,000 Swiss Francs or approx. 1,000,000 US dollars) to his hometown of La Chaux-de-Fonds, of which 25,000 Swiss Francs were earmarked to build the Musée International d'Horlogerie (International Watch Making Museum).[4] Donated by Léon Gallet’s son Georges, the museum’s collection was started with a body of over 100 of Gallet's most complicated and valuable timepieces, including the world's first wristwatch produced for mass consumption in 1892. The balance of the bequeathed funds was used to construct the Musée des beaux-arts de La Chaux-de-Fonds (Beaux Arts Museum of La-Chaux-de-Fonds), designed by renowned painter Charles l’Eplattenier and architect René Chapallaz, Le Corbusier's architecture teacher.
Prior to his passing, Léon Gallet commissioned René Chapallaz, to design "Villa Gallet". Situated in "Parc Gallet" in the southern part of La Chaux-de-Fonds, "Villa Gallet" still retains its original name and is considered as an important historic contribution to the Swiss Art Nouveau movement of the late 19th century.

A watch, especially a complication like this one, comes with many labels to identify the various parameters of time. This Oris moon phase, dual time zone complication is powered by the Calibre 581 developed in 1991 by its watchmakers in Holstein, Switzerland.. This particular watch has performed flawlessly through many time zones for many years. Submittal for the 6/15/20 Macro Monday's theme of "Label.”

Hippeastrum breeding began in 1799 when Arthur Johnson, a watchmaker in Prescot, England, crossed Hippeastrum reginae with Hippeastrum vitattum, obtaining hybrids that were later given the name Hippeastrum × 'Johnsonii' (Johnson's amaryllis, 'hardy amaryllis' or St. Joseph's lily). Johnson shared his work with the Liverpool Botanic Garden which was fortunate, since his greenhouse was destroyed in a fire. His hybrid was being cultivated in the US by the mid-nineteenth century. Many new hybrid lines followed as new species were sent to Europe from South America.
In 1946, two Dutch growers moved to South Africa and began cultivation there. Although most cultivars of Hippeastrum come from the Dutch and South African sources, bulbs are now being developed in the United States, Japan, Israel, India, Brazil and Australia. The double flowers from Japan are particularly beautiful. Nurseries may list Amaryllis bulbs as being 'Dutch', 'Israeli', 'Peruvian' etc., depending on the country of origin.

A few months ago, I was shopping in an antiques and curios shop (surprise surprise) when I came across two boxes full of beautifully lithographed Victorian era business cards, the majority from America, and most business long lost to time over the last 150 or more years. The box had a handwritten sign on it saying that the cards were $5.00 each, reduced to $3.00 if I bought five or more. I asked to see the boxes and went through them.
As I was going through them, the lady behind the counter told me that they were all the collection of a woman who used to have a stall in the antique shop (which is a collective). Sadly, but not unexpectedly, the former owner of this collection of cards died of cancer and, having no children of her own, asked her family (who had no interest in them) to sell off her collections in her stall at the antique shop at reasonable prices.
I was so impressed by the quality of the cards, and touched by the story of their former collector owner, that I ended up buying eighty of the cards. I could have bought more, but I had to draw the line somewhere! At least this way I have held at least a portion of her collection, which she had so carefully curated, together.

Léon L. Gallet (1832–1899), watchmaker, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and past family patriarch of the Gallet Watch Company of Switzerland,[1] is considered as one of the primary architects and founders of the 19th century industrialization of the Swiss watchmaking industry.
The son of Julien Gallet (1806–1849), who moved the family watchmaking business from Geneva, Switzerland, to the manufacturing district of La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1826, Léon L. Gallet was responsible for the creation of numerous Swiss and American watch brands.[2] Among these was the prestigious Fabrique Electa, which became the upscale line of the jewelry department at Macy’s Department store in New York City during the first quarter of the 20th century. Léon L. Gallet also established the brands National Park, Continental Watch Company, Jerome Park, Bridgeport, Eureka, Commodore, Union Square, and Lady Racine.[3] While the appearance and function of many of Gallet’s timepieces were tailored to the tastes of the American consumers, all of the movements in these watches were manufactured in Switzerland.
Léon Gallet played a philanthropic role in the business, cultural, and social life of his native home. As well as his prominent position as a member of both the legislature of Neuchâtel and the Council of La Chaux-de-Fonds, he was for many years, the president of the Société des Amis des Arts (Fine Arts Society) and Grand Master of the Free Masons. Together with Louis & Jules Courvoisier, Ernest Francillon of Longines, and Constant Girard-Perregaux, Léon Gallet founded the Société Intercantonale des Industries du Jura (Intercantonal Society for the Industries of the Jura Area) in 1876. The purpose of this organization was to assist in the promotion and distribution of products from Switzerland's Watch Valley while addressing the growing threat of competition in European markets from American watch manufacturers.
Upon his death in 1899, Léon Gallet bequeathed a sum of 43,000 Swiss Francs (today equivalent to 1,000,000 Swiss Francs or approx. 1,000,000 US dollars) to his hometown of La Chaux-de-Fonds, of which 25,000 Swiss Francs were earmarked to build the Musée International d'Horlogerie (International Watch Making Museum).[4] Donated by Léon Gallet’s son Georges, the museum’s collection was started with a body of over 100 of Gallet's most complicated and valuable timepieces, including the world's first wristwatch produced for mass consumption in 1892. The balance of the bequeathed funds was used to construct the Musée des beaux-arts de La Chaux-de-Fonds (Beaux Arts Museum of La-Chaux-de-Fonds), designed by renowned painter Charles l’Eplattenier and architect René Chapallaz, Le Corbusier's architecture teacher.
Prior to his passing, Léon Gallet commissioned René Chapallaz, to design "Villa Gallet". Situated in "Parc Gallet" in the southern part of La Chaux-de-Fonds, "Villa Gallet" still retains its original name and is considered as an important historic contribution to the Swiss Art Nouveau movement of the late 19th century.

The collection of watchmaker Kovács Jenő can be seen in this museum. Outside the museum there is a clock tower with historical figures appearing every second hour from 10 a.m. till 6 p.m.

Lighthouse of "Sant Cristòfol"
Popularly known as La Farola, the Sant Cristòfol Lighthouse fulfills its mission as a guide for sailors. The first lighthouse was installed in Vilanova in 1834, it was very limited in height and light projection. Thus, in the year 1865 a second lighthouse was installed with housing for the keeper and with fixed light that lasted until 1905, the year in which it was demolished and, in its same location, the current streetlight was built on May 1 of 1905. The lighthouse continues in operation since then and only its activity was interrupted during the Civil War.
La Farola has an altitude of 21 meters, with a spiral staircase of 98 steps and in its dome there is a reflector focus composed of three optical complexes, to which a watchmaker gives a rotating movement. The lighthouse emits a clear, unambiguous and unique message with a group of 3 white flashes every 8 seconds and has a nominal range of 19 miles (35,188 Km.)
This is my mothers birthplace. A little farm with breathtaking view. Here from a family outing in 2009. I have vivid memories from this place as a young boy. My grandfather was a farmer, watchmaker and and fiddle player with countless performances on national radio .
Breitling is a brand of Swiss watches from the Canton of Jura. The watchmaker offers Certified Chronometers designed primarily for aviation use, though most frequently worn as high-end luxury watches. Breitling's watches offer aviation functions, though their chronograph functions have become more of status symbols than practically applied tools. They typically have a large face (e.g. the Breitling for Bentley Motors edition has a 48 mm Case Diameter) for better visibility and to allow display of more information on the analog dials. Many other models feature an automatic winding mechanism that is purely mechanical. Many Breitling watches are equipped with additional functions such as the flyback function, split-second, moon phase, date display and other complications.
From artificial legs to power tools to aircraft, the Desoutter story is a strange one indeed.
Son of an immigrant French watchmaker, Marcel Desoutter learned to fly at the age of 17 in 1911, becoming an instructor, test and demonstration pilot. In 1913, he lost a leg in a plane crash and, dissatisfied with his wooden artificial leg, together with his brother, designed and fabricated one made of aluminium alloy. It was much lighter, and so successful, he was able to return to flying. He subsequently set up a company to manufacture aluminium alloy prosthetics. Business boomed due to the First World War, and the company also made its own portable pneumatic tools to aid production of the limbs. The tools were also incredibly successful and the Desoutter Company is still in business to this day, making industrial power tools.
In 1928, Marcel branched out into aircraft manufacture using his expertise in Duralumin and power tools. He licensed the Dutch Koolhoven F.K.41 design and produced around 40 aircraft, which were primarily used as trainers by National Flying Services Ltd, in whose orange and black livery this aircraft is painted.
Incidentally, one of this type (a Mk II) competed in the famous MacRobertson England to Australia Air Race of 1934, finishing in 7th place.
Marcel Desoutter went on to lead the development of Gatwick aerodrome into the major international airport it is today, passing away in 1952.

A kinetic watch that Mrs FW gave me some years ago has a certain six appeal. It needs some TLC, so I'll be taking it to a watchmaker for new glass over the summer.
