I've been looking forward to shooting my son's senior portraits. Here are a few I shot yesterday. Fun.

Lighting Info: Key light (580 EX II strobe on 1/4 power) shot into a 43" umbrella camera left. 5-in-1 reflector camera right for fill. Mid morning natural light in the background.

So, I'm not big into country music, but I gotta admit, it sure is fun to listen to live, especially when people (other people to be exact) are out on the dance floor doing the Texas Two Step. That there feller is Mr. Dale Watson. Quite the entertainer he is. He plays his guitar "real good".

Dale and his band were one of many that performed at Precision Camera's "Ghost Town Hootenanny", a benefit concert for the ARC of Texas. I'm not sure what a Hootenanny is, but it was fun. As the name implies, the whatchamacallit was held in a ghost town about 30 minutes from Austin.

Being that the shindig was thrown by a camera shop, us photog types are competing for the best band shot (and $100 worth of prints). I may enter this one, or another one. We'll see.

Update: Turns out I won 2nd place which translates to $50 worth of prints at Precision. I'll take that.

Lighting: 7pm (golden hour!) sun light from behind the camera. Canon 580 EX II (off camera flash) on full power (fighting the sun) behind Mr. Watson triggered using Pocket Wizards. Love those things.

I had the privilege of shooting Westlake High School's production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

In this one I dragged the shutter to get the feeling of Belle being attacked by the wolves.

Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Oregon

www.washingtonpost.com/local/these-buildings-will-never-e...

Joe Heim, Washington Post, January 16, 2016

"The shout startles everyone: “Provocateur at the gate!”

A young man runs through the communal kitchen at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, two others fast behind. They are dressed in camouflage and pulling on military-style vests. All three wear black balaclavas as they rush outside and run to the front entrance of the headquarters that has been held by anti-government occupiers for the past two weeks.

The burst of turmoil interrupts an otherwise quiet afternoon. Several dozen armed men and women now control this federal facility in remote southeastern Oregon, a growing siege staged to protest the imprisonment of two local ranchers and a federal government that they say is out of control. They spend their days concocting strategies, meeting with reporters and well-wishers, and organizing mundane chore charts, all while remaining on hair-trigger alert to any effort to infiltrate their ranks or forcibly end the occupation.

...... LaVoy Finicum, a 54-year-old Arizona rancher and one of the group’s leaders, says the siege will continue until the federal government cedes control of the 187,000-acre refuge to Harney County.

“It needs to be very clear that these buildings will never, ever return to the federal government,” says Finicum, who wears a cowboy hat and a Colt .45 pistol holstered on his hip.

Thomas Boyd, The Oregonian/AP, February 11, 2016:

The last four occupiers of a Malheur National Wildlife Refuge surrendered to authorities. The holdouts were the last remnants of a larger group that seized the wildlife refuge nearly six weeks ago, demanding that the government turn over the land to locals and release two ranchers imprisoned for setting fires.

Tim Blount, Executive Director, Friends of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge:

July 12,2016

There are many questions about the expected opening of the Head Quarters of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. At this point, there is no date for the opening but there is an air of optimism that it may happen within the next two months, however, as we all know things can change. The Fish and Wildlife Service are making the safety and security of those that both work and visit the refuge as their top priority. To that end security measures have been reviewed and the changes needed have already started.

Tim Blount, Executive Director of Friends of Malheur NWR was asked to testify in front of the democratic side of the House Committee on Natural Resources by ranking members Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Arizona, and Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Mississippi as a representative of those that were directly impacted by the siege at Malheur NWR. This forum was held in the hopes that testimony received would open dialogue between both sides of the aisle. Click the URL to see the entire video from this forum.

Trial Verdict October 27, 2016"

The end of the six-week trial for seven people who took over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Oregon can be summed up in two words: not guilty.

A 12-person jury found occupation leaders Ammon and Ryan Bundy not guilty Thursday of the government's primary charge: conspiracy to impede federal officers by force, threat or intimidation. Their five co-defendants — Jeff Banta, Shawna Cox, David Fry, Kenneth Medenbach and Neil Wampler — have all been found not guilty as well.

Buildings and grounds are active work sites and are closed for safety reasons. We are pleased to open other portions of the refuge to visitors and we are working on a re-opening celebration for Refuge Headquarters set for the late summer/early fall.

The Center Patrol Road (auto tour route) and Krumbo Reservoir are open to the public. .

Malheur National Wildlife Refuge was established on August 18, 1908, by President Theodore Roosevelt as the Lake Malheur Reservation. Roosevelt set aside unclaimed government lands encompassed by Malheur, Mud and Harney Lakes “as a preserve and breeding ground for native birds.” The newly established “Lake Malheur Reservation” was the 19th of 51 wildlife refuges created by Roosevelt during his tenure as president. At the time, Malheur was the third refuge in Oregon and one of only six refuges west of the Mississippi.

In the late 1880s, plume hunters decimated North American bird populations in pursuit of breeding feathers for the hat industry. Hunters targeted large flocks of colonial nesting birds and shorebirds, killing birds indiscriminately and orphaning chicks. Eventually, the large numbers of colonial nesting birds on Malheur Lake were discovered by plume hunters. In 1908, wildlife photographers William L. Finley and Herman T. Bohlman discovered that most of the white herons (egrets) on Malheur Lake had been killed in 1898 by plume hunters. After 10 years, the white heron population still had not recovered. With backing from the Oregon Audubon Society, Finley and Bohlman proposed establishment of a bird reservation to protect birds, using Malheur, Mud and Harney lakes.

The refuge now encompasses 187,757 acres of wildlife habitat. The 65,000-acre Blitzen Valley was purchased in 1935 and added to the refuge to secure water rights for Malheur and Mud lakes. With the creation of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1933, the refuge was able to use this additional manpower to begin major improvements on the refuge in 1935.

The CCC constructed most of the infrastructure in the Blitzen Valley, including the Center Patrol Road which travels through the center of the refuge. The 14,000-acre Double-O Unit was added to the refuge in 1942 and provides important shorebird habitat, as well as waterfowl nesting areas. Malheur Refuge is situated within the Harney Basin in southeastern Oregon. Located in the Northern Great Basin, this portion of the State is lightly populated, generally arid with cold winters, and characterized by wide open spaces.

The refuge constitutes a small percentage of the Northern Great Basin’s total acreage but is a tremendously important source of wildlife habitat relative to other portions of the Northern Great Basin. The refuge represents a crucial stop along the Pacific Flyway and offers resting, breeding and nesting habitat for hundreds of migratory birds and other wildlife. Many of the species migrating through or breeding here are highlighted as priority species in national bird conservation plans.

Wamplers Lake, MI, October 8, 2016

Lincoln and I are both Portlanders. We spent Saturday basking in the slow Trout Lake life. Trout Lake is a town of a few hundred people at the base of Mt Adams.

Our friend Wampler's backyard is a great place to lounge. We ate canteloupe and drank beers and listened to music and played games and read and watched cows and sauna-ed and gazed at the mountain and glowed and grinned and shook our heads in amazement at it all. One of my favorite places on earth...Trout Lake, Washington

Actually, this is some sort of tram thing, although I never actually saw one. Taken 15 minutes or so after sunset in Irving Texas, which is north-west of Dallas.

My camera couldn't decide, and neither could I, how to adjust the white balance. I liked the purple sky though, so I kept it.

I corrected the perspective and lens distortion in Photoshop.

that hot tub was not hot. It was warmer than the air (thus the steam) but not warmer than our bodies which is sort of the point of a hot tub. There was some issues with the fire that heats the hot tub.

It was a warm tub, definitely not hot and even that was only the top 10 inches of the water. The bottom layers were quite chilly. We knew this before getting in but I still made the call that we should go for it. It'll be better next time I'm sure.

Shivering in the luke warm water with Kelly, Danny & Wampler.

We would make up for it the next morning with some time in the hot HOT hot sauna. sweet relief!

Studio Mancave as of 10-11-25

Since the last time I posted, I moved out of my parent's to the big city, closer to the hospital I was training in (before the operation that sidelined me).

My mancave turned into a music studio mancave, where, you guessed it, I write and record music. Not just myself, but have had several friends already come by and record their instruments as well.

I do have an attenuator for my amps and a decibel meter with alarm to warn me if I am playing to loud and disturb my neighbors in the condominium building. And I can also use plugins or use my amp modeller pedal if I choose to and use my headphones.

Of course, I am still into gaming, but had to leave my racing simulator PC at my parent's for the time being.

I still have most of my photography gear, and hope to start posting more again, even when I eventually return to medical training later this year.
