I went on a long and very steep and strenuous hike yesterday. Well worth the effort though. I took the South Skyline Trail from the top of North Ogden Pass. I didn't even come close to traversing the entire mountain range. I guess it's 9.5 miles from the Pass to Ogden Canyon (or vice versa). I only made it about 2 miles, near the top to the ridge. Unfortunately by the time I got there the skies were dull and mostly overcast, but still - what a view! I'll be sharing a few more images from the excursion.

This shot was taken on the way up the trail. I'm so glad I took it on the way up instead of on the way back, because it was totally overcast and starting to snow on the way down. It would have made quite an uninteresting photo. This view is more or less to the north, toward the Powder Mountain area.

EYE-DEE-QUE (Something Like an Asclepeion)

January 9 - February 13, 2016

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 9, 6-8pm

Baik Art presents EYE-DEE-QUE (Something Like an Asclepeion), a solo installation and series of events by Los Angeles artist Matt Wardell.

For the exhibition, Wardell will present an immersive environment of images and objects by channeling ‘something like’ an ancient Greek temple of healing. Using Baik Art’s unique architecture, viewers experience a literal (and perhaps figurative) katabasis (‘to go down’ as in a descent of some type), but more importantly, and ideally, a catharsis (‘cleansing’ or ‘purification’).

Numerous objects, found and constructed, engage with the verticality of Baik Art’s shaft-like space, surrounded by an installation of wall works including drawings, collages, and repurposed images. Several fabric sculptures fill the gallery functioning as apotropaic totems. These Guardian Figures suggest a ‘presence’, ideally something beyond the object.

Daytime and evening events will further activate the gallery a space for healing. Practitioners from a variety of fields will be on hand for consultation. Music for Healing or What You Need will present a sonic cleansing. Incubation and Dream Analysis will be an overnight event of guided sleep followed by dream analysis with a professional. Utilizing the healing properties of dog saliva, An Event for Wound Licking will be a participatory event pairing wounds with dogs. For the date and time of each event, please contact the artist at shonufwardell@hotmail.com.

In ancient Greece and Rome, an asclepeion was a healing temple, sacred to Asclepius, the Greek God of Medicine. These temples were places in which patients would visit to receive either treatment or some sort of healing, whether it was spiritual or physical. Epidaurus was the first place to worship Asclepius as a god, beginning sometime in the 5th century BCE.

Starting around 350 BCE, the cult of Asclepius became increasingly popular. Pilgrims flocked to asclepieia to be healed. They slept overnight (“incubation”) and reported their dreams to a priest the following day. He prescribed a cure, often a visit to the baths or a gymnasium. Since snakes were sacred to Asclepius, they were often used in healing rituals. Non-venomous snakes were left to crawl on the floor in dormitories where the sick and injured slept.

Matt Wardell seeks to prolong a sense of wonder while placing the viewer in a lingering position of active assessment. He is interested in how we choose to live and in introducing work that facilitates these investigations. Wardell enjoys walking on fences, answering wrong numbers, and giving directions to places he does not know. Uncomfortable laughter, confusion, and irritation tend to be the byproducts of Wardell’s works.

Wardell has exhibited his work at venues throughout the United States and Mexico, including the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco (SFMOMA), Claremont Museum of Art in Claremont, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), REDCAT, PØST, Human Resources, Black Dragon Society, Mark Moore Gallery, and Commonwealth and Council, all in Los Angeles. Wardell is a founding member of the artist collective 10lb Ape.

At 22:56 on 5 June, 1944, the six gliders towed by Halifax bombers took off from RAF Tarrent Rushton. Horsa number one, the first of the three headed for the Caen Canal, carried Major Howard with Lieutenant Brotheridge's platoon, number two bore Lieutenant Wood's platoon, and number three carried Lieutenant Smith's platoon. Captain Priday with Lieutenant Hooper's platoon made for the river bridge aboard number four. Horsa number five carrying Lieutenant Fox's platoon and was followed by number six bearing Lieutenant Sweeney's platoon. Each glider also carried five men from the Royal Engineers platoon.

Flying over the English Channel at 7,000 feet (2,100 m), the bombers crossed the Normandy coast at 00:07 on 6 June, 1944 and released their towed gliders. With Staff Sergeant Wallwork at the controls, the number one glider crashed into the barbed wire surrounding the canal bridge defences at 00:16. The other two gliders followed at one minute intervals. The number two glider broke in half and came to halt at the edge of a large pond.[41] One of the men fell into the water and drowned, becoming the first casualty of the operation. Lieutenants Brotheridge and Smith's platoons headed for the bridge, while Lieutenant Wood's platoon moved towards the trenches on its north east side.

It's often difficult to find a new angle or take on well-known photographic icons like Thor's Hammer in Bryce Canyon. As the warm morning sun lit the entire canyon, I saw this small pine and found what I thought was a new angle to shoot from to capture the ever-popular Thor's Hammer.

Many, if not most, people who live in Northern Utah have probably been to Temple Square in Salt Lake City. And most photographs from Temple Square tend to be pretty similar, especially around the holidays with the whole area covered in Christmas lights. My goal during the annual 2010 Temple Square photowalk was to come away with something a bit different. Did I accomplish that? I don't know. But I tried.

Shot with a Canon 5DII, 70-200mm f/4L, 0.6 sec, f/4, ISO 100.

If you're interested in photowalking with the rest of the group, check out Photowalking Utah.

Thank you to those who organized this event! It was good to get out and shoot, even if it was freezing cold!

This was taken just minutes before the sun set completely. Having a graduated neutral density filter really helped in this situation. All the bushes and lower rocky areas were already in shadow. By placing the edge of the GND filter just below the edge of the sunlight, I was able to bring out the lower third of the image to match the rest.

Even the door pockets on this Messerschmitt are trimmed in snakeskin. Love the steering yoke. Seen outside an Essex pub, The Gardener's Arms, this spring.

'fraid I can't tell for sure if this is an original cabriolet, a roadster or a later conversion, but say it is just what it seems to be on account of the trim which looks original and so lets say we call it a KR201, one of 300 made as opposed to , what, in excess of 25,000 KR200s, until someone tells us otherwise. For sure it is one of the tidiest I have ever seen.

To buy a KR210 at auction might set you back 30,000 euros, that's a lotta wonga.
