A plausible theory states that the chapel would have been built around 996, under Otto III. He is said to have built it for his mother, Empress Theophanu, who died at Valkhof but was buried in Cologne.

Charlemagne's chapel in Aachen (now part of the Aachen cathedral) served as an example for the construction, which can be seen in the special sixteen-angled shape of the chapel. There is an open eight-sided space in the middle of the chapel. The chapel is the only remaining Romanesque central building in the Netherlands. Because of the similarities with the Aachen palatine chapel, the age of the Valkhof chapel was long overestimated; the chapel is said to date back to the 8th century, making it by far the oldest building in the Netherlands. The portal shows influences of Carolingian architecture and is probably the oldest part of the chapel. The wallwork on the outside of the chapel has been changed several times, while the eight-sided core of the building has been raised with a defense tower. On the Valkhof are also the remains of the apse of the Sint-Maartenskapel (Barbarossa ruin), built in the 12th century.

I'm so glad I went out to shoot yesterday! Because of the rain today, these amazing ice formations would have been gone forever had I not captured them yesterday. I would have liked to have something a little more prominent in the foreground, but the color was vanishing so quickly from the clouds that I didn't have time to even think about it. Your comments and critiques are welcome!

The Pilgrim's Church is the Protestant church of Vrouwenpolder in the Dutch province of Zeeland , located at Fort den Haakweg 2.

In 1314 a chapel was built in Vrouwenpolder (then: Polrekerc ), which was elevated in 1324 to a parish church, dedicated to Our Lady. The church was enlarged around 1340. This church came into possession of a painting by Our Lady of the Polder , to which miraculous properties were attributed. This painting is said to have been made around 1500 and is probably a copy of an older painting, which would then be the real miraculous painting, but which has been lost.

The legend dates from the beginning of the Vrouwenpolderse parish church, so early 14th century. A pious resident wanted to give the new parish church a bit more luster. He went to Middelburg with a blank panel to ask a painter, one master Willem, to paint an image of Our Lady on it. A little later the painter was visited by a young man who wanted to carry out an assignment, and was given the assignment to perform. The painting was completed a few hours later, and the young man disappeared. This was generally considered a miracle.

In 1572, during the Siege of Middelburg (1572-1574) , the church was almost completely destroyed, and devotion ended as a result of the Reformation. The painting seemed lost, but was found again in a private collection in the 20th century and has been in the Catholic Church of Middelburg since 1926, where the devotion regarding the painting revived from 1931 onwards.

The church, largely destroyed in 1572, was rebuilt in 1623, using parts of the wallwork of the older church. Now, however, a, smaller and lower, Reformed hall church was created, the same that is still present today. This church was restored in 1955.

It concerns a brick hall church on a rectangular floor plan under a gable roof. There is a square open roof rider on the roof. The entrance has a basket arch and a pointed arch window above. The walls have buttresses. The church is enclosed by a wall. The interior is covered by a flat ceiling, supported by beams.

The pulpit is from 1624 and the baptismal gate, the chandelier and the reading bench are from the same time. The baptismal basin is from 1718 and shows the inscription: O youthful flesh and blood, think you must die .

The neo-gothic organ dates from around 1910, but was placed in this church in 1938.

Yesterday as I was heading out to catch the sunset, it looked like it would be great. But by the time I got to where I had planned, a blanket of clouds had pretty much covered the sky. My only hope was that the sun might get through the cloud cover, as it often does, right before it sets. So I waited it out, and I guess luck was kind of on my side. The sun did show through for a few minutes, but it wasn't quite what I was seeking. However, the reds that shined through on a small portion of the clouds were quite intense. I didn't enhance the colors at all in this image. So, in the end it's not what I was hoping for when I set out, but it could have been worse...

Whenever a high-ranking dignitary visits a military installation, it is expected that the garrison will prepare a guard to greet the dignitary. As such, when the newly-elected President of West Terrastralia David Wallwork visited Fort Watson in early 2012, it was no surprise that the Fort had a formed guard ready to greet him on arrival.

My first post in several months, I've been pretty busy with work, so I haven't had much time until now to do any builds. Hopefully I'll be able to do a few more, but...Anyway, C&C welcome!

One of two new arrivals here is a(nother) gold Volvo 740GLE; having owned all but identical E113 MFK for seven years, my short notice requirement for a daily drive turned this example in Kilsyth which was collected today.

It was supplied new by John Wallwork Volvo, Liverpool.

Old couple still trundling about in this. I see it several times a week, in all areas of town. They certainly get about a bit in it.

I've also seen it being worked on at a local Volvo specialist garage.

This shot with the sunlight behind me and on the subject.

What a work of art this is, the characters of each of the figures is really special, and all projected in plain Steel plate uncoated, which I believe was probably CNC Water Jet Cut (Though of this I am not certain). The resultant patina that has been left to self perpetuate in the atmosphere is absolutely perfect for the Memorial piece.

See a fascinating article about his Marnhull pottery, where I did a studio practice, here www.alanwallwork.info/awinfo-studio-marnhull.php

TITLE: Sergeant R.C. Travis VC, DCM, MM

ARTIST: Richard A. Wallwork

MEDIUM/SUPPORT: Oils on canvas

DIMENSIONS: 1218 x 858mm

Richard Travis 9/523 received a posthumous Victoria Cross (VC) for his actions at Rossignol Wood on 24 July 1918. He was killed by shellfire the next day.

The citation published in the 27 September 1918 London Gazette reads as follows:

"For most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. During “surprise” operations it was necessary to destroy an impassable wire block. Sergeant Travis, regardless of

all personal danger, volunteered for this duty. Before zero hour, in broad daylight, and in close proximity to enemy posts, he crawled out and successfully destroyed the block with bombs, thus enabling the attacking parties to pass through. A few minutes later a bombing party of the right of the attack was held up by two enemy machine-guns, and the success of the whole operation was in danger. Perceiving

this, Sergeant Travis, with great gallantry and utter disregard of danger, rushed the position, killed the crew and captured the guns. An enemy officer and three men immediately rushed at him from a bend in the trench and attempted to retake the guns. These four he killed single-handed, thus allowing the bombing party, on which much depended, to advance. The success of the operation was almost

entirely due to the heroic work of this gallant non-commissioned officer, and to the vigour with which he made and used opportunities for inflicting casualties on

the enemy. He was killed twenty-four hours later when, under a most intense bombardment prior to an enemy counter-attack, he was going from post to post encouraging the men."

The portrait above forms part of the National Collection of War Art. Artist Richard Wallwork was born in England in 1882. He taught art at Canterbury College School of Art from 1911 to 1927, and was the Director of that institution from 1927 to 1946. Wallwork was commissioned to paint portraits of Victoria Cross recipients after the First World War.
