A little online research reveals that there are four types of lizard to be found on the isle of Sicily. Two, the Sicilian wall Lizard and the Italian wall lizard are very similar in appearance. As far as I can tell this example which was photographed at the wonderful Vendacari Nature Reserve is an Italian Wall Lizard. It's size for one thing, having a body (not including the tail) of around six inches was the most obvious factor in my decision process.

From what I have read, this species has been introduced widely in other countries ands has become an unwanted pest. It breeds quickly and outcompetes other local wildlife.

Hadrian's Wall, Steel Rigg, Northumberland. A really misty morning, with a gorgeous sunrise trying to burn its way through the thick mist.

Before I built a wall I’d ask to know

What I was walling in or walling out,

And to whom I was like to give offense.

Something there is that doesn’t love a wall,

That wants it down. - Robert Frost's Mending Wall

Hadrian's Wall is 1,900 years old this year. It was built in AD122 to guard the northern frontier of the roman empire.

A patchwork of fields and maze of dry-stone walls near Malham Cove in North Yorkshire. Dry stone walls are one of the Yorkshire Dales' most distinctive features, and are some of the oldest man-made landscape features.

It's believed there are over 5,000 miles (8,000 km) of dry-stone walls in the Yorkshire Dales. Not all of them are in tip-top condition, but most are well maintained.

In the foreground is one of the numerous squeeze holes to be negotiated when walking in the Dales. Just enough room to squeeze through the gap and narrow enough to keep sheep out.
