Prominent stone markers like this one can be found in perhaps a dozen spots along the road between Echizen-city and Sabae-city, a distance of maybe 5-6 km. Some declare a Buddhist phrase, like Namu Amida Butsu, but others commemorate devastating famines that killed many people in the 1800s. Between those disasters and today there have been many typhoons and the occasional great fire or damaging earthquake. But only with the silent witness of this marker are the lives lost many generations ago still remembered by a few people who are curious enough to stop and look or ask about them. Most everyone else is preoccupied with other concerns, like this truck driver eager to complete his trip.

I shot this on my way back from a record shopping trip in soho. I didnt have my tripod with me at the time so i had to shoot it at iso 1600, which means its very noisey.
