Painted in the 1480s. Scholars are unsure when and for whom this work by Renaissance artist Botticelli (c.1445-1510) was painted. Most agree, however, that it was painted in Florence in the 1480s, and that it was likely a gift to commemorate a wedding. The mythological lovers Venus and Mars lay languidly next to each other, while little satyrs play around with the armour Mars wears as the god as war.
