This is a lucky man as he got ASP's latest Sentry handcuffs which not only look pretty much cool but also wear surprisingly comfortable. The Martin chain around his waist allows him to be handcuffed in front, which is way better than being cuffed behind the back, especially for a longer period of time. And it might get a long day in court ...
You don't see green and white stripes that often, but they match perfectly with bright orange. In combination with full restraints, you will be easily recognizable as an inmate. Everyone will stare at you when you shuffle in that outfit to court. You are perhaps the most interesting person in the whole courtroom.
The purpose of the so-called Martin chain is to restrict movement when an inmate is handcuffed in front. While behind the back-cuffing should be pretty much standard for any arrest situations, front cuffing may be sensible for most transport or court setups. Therefore, the Martin chain is quite a clever device: It fits almost any waist, and it makes front cuffing way more secure. One may find it degrading to be put in chains like a dangerous animal, but that may also send a message to the public: If you break the law, you may end up in chains.
On this rather harmless looking guy, the chains may look exaggerated at first sight. The guards even had to wrap the spare end of the chain twice around the inmate's waist. But you should never judge a person by its looks. So full restraints are mandatory for all inmates, regardless if male or female, old or young, tall or small, slim or brawny, misdemeanor or felony.

When going to court, most people would dress in their best Sunday clothes. But as an inmate, you won't have a choice unless you actually face a jury. So you may be the only person in the whole courtroom wearing a bright orange jumpsuit. When you stand there in handcuffs, arms stacked and belted to your waist, you perhaps feel embarrassed. But you should not. You are perhaps the most interesting person in the whole courtroom. It makes you look tough.

Overall rating: Kind of overkill security. Restraining a man like this does not make any other sense than punishment.

Low-medium security inmates are normally spared the black box. But when a high security guy joins you for transport, be prepared to have your arms stacked in front. The reason for that: It's the highest security level that decides how all inmates in the van get restrained. Shit happens. But hey, it's al least a great experience: feeling like a felon.
You go to court with some of your fellow inmates, all of you in dark blue uniforms, handcuffs, waist chains and leg irons. You wait until your name is called, just to say these words your attorney told you to say. This would mean that due to a sentencing agreement, you get away with time served. But you won't be allowed to go immediately. You have to wait until the court session is over and then walk back to jail, still in your restraints, where you finally get released. Some of your fellow inmates aren't that lucky. Cuffs and chains will be part of their daily routine.
With the word INMATE printed on the back and the chains flashing on your waist, nobody would mistake you for a plumber in his boilersuit.
As there were some high security guys riding with you on the same bus, all inmates got high security restraints.
When being booked into San Diego Jail, you get a dark blue uniform and a set of Smith & Wesson m-1800 belly chains. When you haven't been in belly chains before, you may be somewhat frightened, not knowing to expect. But you will soon notice that they actually wear pretty comfy.
Close custody inmates are not allowed to wear t-shirts. They just get this incredibly hard wearing uniform. Full restraints whenever being moved outside won't add any comfort. It's used as a punishment for hardened felons, but also as a shock incarceration for first-time offenders. You hate it? Well, you should better bring your life back on track.
Green and white stripes stand for inmate trustees. That status may earn you some privileges, but nevertheless, every time you get moved outside the secured area of the facility, you'll be in full restraints for security reasons.
Don't expect much comfort while in segregation. You'll be locked in a spartan single cell for 24/7 except for shower and some time in the yard. Whenever leaving your cell, you'll be put in full restraints.
Once uopn a time, this guy was a cop. But then he got off track and ended up in prison. For his own safety, he is being held in protective custody/administrative segregation. In his active career, he arrested some of the inmates that are now serving time with him, so it's sensible that he has as little contact with other inmates as possible. The white jumpsuit signals his status. He spends most of his time in solitary confinement. When he is allowed to leave his cell, he is placed in full restraints. Four armed guards escort him wherever he needs to go. Think before you act. Crime does not pay.
For those inmates who need tighter restraints, these belly chains allow a high security restraint too. Congrats, you hit the jackpot, inmate!
If the guards prefer front cuffing: no problem. The empty cuffs on the sides provide additional ways of controling the inmate during escort.

It's not only dangerous felons who are remanded to the maximum security wing of the facility. Notorious troublemakers and other guys who think they are funny may be sent there too. What to expect there: A spartan cell where you will be locked in solitary confinement basically 24/7. No TV, not even radio. You may leave the cell for shower once and for one hour of exercise three times a week. Dark red jumpsuits will mark you as supermax inmate. When being moved outside the supermax wing, e.g. for court dates, you will be put in massive full harness restraints: handcuffs on a belly chain, connector chain and leg irons. Don't complain, inmate: you deserve it.
Smith & Wesson model 1 "universal" handcuffs are designed to fit both smaller and larger wrists. They go on not too tight, so they even make the infamous Black Box bearable. But it's still far away from what you would call comfortable.
These cuffs and chains look a bit exaggerated on a scrawny guy like me. The handcuffs have a special bow and therefore are universal so that they accomodate both bigger and smaller wrists. The waist chain does not have a snap hook for the spare end to be fixed behind my back, so they fixed it in front in the martin link. I'm in jail just for some minor infractions, but I accept that I need to be put in restraints both for my safety and the safety of the public. And I must admit it looks kind of cool. In civilian clothes, I might look like mister nice guy. In chains, I feel like taken seriously.
The D-ring in front allows to accomodate additional restraints. A connector chain makes walking in leg irons way more easy without any compromises as far as security is concerned. When shuffling to court in full restraints, you feel taken seriously. I may be in troubles, but it feels exciting.
Even medium and low security inmates get the black box for transport. The only difference to high security is in fact that the arms are cuffed in the parallel position which allows slightly more movement but still provides a rather strict restraint.
Looking at the gear lying empty and cold does not show you the power of the steel as seeing it in use does. Further, seeing it in use gives only a hazy impression of what it feels like to wear these restraints or to put them on another man. Still further, wearing them only briefly does not produce the same understanding that wearing them for hours or days does.
