If you are going out to the city to shoot this weekend, or wherever you may be going, you can improve your chances of getting new and interesting photos by choosing a theme. By choosing a theme for your adventure, your mind will be tuned into new possibilities.

For shooting in Chicago, there are a lot of different themes that you could choose. You could decide to focus your day’s shooting on abstract shots of buildings. You would spend the entire day looking for abstract reflections or interesting details in the city. If you go out searching for that one epic shot of Chicago, you never take the time to concentrate on those details. Your theme could be a color, a particular object, or a type of shot.

Some ideas: windows, doors, long exposures, car trails, shooting straight up, birds, people, statues, clouds, reflections, motion, patterns.

Next time you go out for a shoot, think about a theme. You just might get a shot that you wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. Good luck this weekend. Maybe I will see you downtown.

Do you have any other good ideas for a photo adventure theme? Let me know in the comments.
