Recently, Apple filed a patent for an enhanced voice control system which will probably be implemented in the future iOS 5. This system would work by reducing the quantity of information users have to listen to when using their iPhones. Additionally, the system can get familiarized with a user’s preferences over time and deliver only the “tailored” information that he needs. This system, named “Adaptive Audio Feedback System and Method” would apply to alerts, menu navigation and prompts.

Since the purchase of Siri, a “personal assistant” for iPhone, who understands and answers voice commands like “Call me a taxi.” or “Where is the nearest Starbucks?”, Apple has been working hard to improve the voice control in its mobile gadgets. Some rumors say that the voice control will be “deeply integrated” in the next OS.

We can’t wait to see the alpha version of the iOS 5, but most of all, we can’t wait for the new iPhone 5 to be launched.

Then TYM's creative director airbrushed a cosmos mural that comes alive when the light hits it. The completed effect is a show-stopping statement--and it's where The StarLight Theatre gets its name.

My sweet husband stayed up until almost 2am last week to put in our pre-orders for iPhones. They came in the mail today, and we have been playing with them like kids in a candy store! We have never had iPhones before, so perhaps this behavior is justified:) We started playing each other in Scrabble right away, and Eric had fun programming the voice command to respond to him saying, "Call my wife." ;) We went to an art event tonight, so I just snapped this quickly when we got home. This guy is a certified handler and he had the most amazing 'gator I have ever seen. I think he said he's about 7, maybe 6' long, and he's had him since he was an egg. Buddy responds to hand and voice commands to do things like "stay" and "down", one of very few captive 'gators to do this.

He was perfectly happy just laying on the table but if he got bored he would nudge his trainer until he got picked up, just like a dog. He actually turns Buddy loose with his beagles to play with each other in the yard. Simply amazing to me . . .

I know this is just a lousy snapshot, and not something I would normally even post, but this alligator and his handler was just incredible to me!

A boatswain's call is a pipe used on naval ships by a boatswain. It is pronounced, and sometimes spelled, "bosun's call".

The pipe consists of a narrow tube (the gun) which directs air over a metal sphere (the buoy) with a hole in the top. The player opens and closes the hand over the hole to change the pitch. The rest of the pipe consists of a keel, a flat piece of metal beneath the gun that holds the call together, and the shackle, a keyring that connects a long silver or brass chain that sits around the collar, when in ceremonial uniform.

History and usage

Historically the boatswain's call was used to pass commands to the crew when the voice could not be heard over the sounds of the sea. Because of its high pitch, it could be heard over the activities of the crew and bad weather. It is now used in traditional bugle calls such as Evening Colors/Sunset, and in other ceremonies in most modern navies. It is sometimes accompanied by other auditive features such as ruffles and flourishes, voice commands and announcements, or even a gun salute.

Then TYM's creative director airbrushed a cosmos mural that comes alive when the light hits it. The completed effect is a show-stopping statement--and it's where The StarLight Theatre gets its name.

A rotary phone is an older style of telephone characterized by a circular dial with finger holes for each digit. To dial a number, the user would insert a finger into the hole corresponding to the desired digit and rotate the dial clockwise until it hit a stop. Upon releasing the dial, a spring mechanism would return it to its original position. During this return, the phone would generate a series of electrical pulses, with the number of pulses corresponding to the digit dialed. For example, dialing "5" would send five pulses to the telephone exchange, which would then interpret these pulses to connect the call. This "pulse dialing" method was a marvel of mechanical and electrical engineering for its time.

Rotary phones are no longer widely used today due to the advent of more efficient and versatile technologies. They were largely replaced by push-button telephones (also known as Touch-Tone phones) starting in the 1960s. Push-button phones use dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) signaling, which involves sending distinct audio tones for each number, making dialing significantly faster and more accurate than pulse dialing. Furthermore, the shift from analog to digital telecommunication systems made pulse dialing less compatible with modern infrastructure. The evolution continued with mobile phones and smartphones, which offer a multitude of features beyond basic calling, such as texting, internet access, and a vast array of applications.

The primary reasons today's young generation might struggle to operate a rotary phone stem from a lack of exposure and the significant difference in user interface. Growing up in an era dominated by touchscreens and intuitive digital interfaces, the mechanical and sequential nature of a rotary dial is completely alien to them. They are accustomed to instant feedback and immediate results from a simple tap, whereas a rotary phone requires a deliberate physical action for each digit, followed by a wait for the dial to return before the next digit can be entered. The concept of a "dial tone" itself might be unfamiliar, as modern phones typically connect instantly.

Moreover, the absence of visual cues like an on-screen keypad or immediate haptic feedback can be disorienting. Young people are used to visual prompts and the ability to correct errors easily. With a rotary phone, misdialing a single digit means the entire number has to be redialed, a stark contrast to the backspace or delete functions common on digital devices. The entire process of picking up a receiver, waiting for a dial tone, and then meticulously rotating a dial for each number is a foreign and seemingly cumbersome experience for a generation that interacts with technology through swipes, taps, and voice commands.

My foster Trooper is making some progress each and every day. His anxieties seem to be lessening, and his confidence grows. He can now shake a paw consistently. He is getting a little better walking on a leash - I only get dragged for half the walk instead of the full walk. And if I can get him into the sit position when people or dogs are passing by, he doesn't act like a complete maniac (he thinks barking and jumping at people is the appropriate response). For the most part, because of this - people stay very far away from him. But when I do see people that aren't intimidated by his size and behaviour, I ask them to meet Trooper - and once he settles and is acting properly, he gets affection from a the person. This works very well....but there are not many takers as most are afraid.

This evening I was less than pleased when he chomped Buster on the head, thankfully it wasn't hard. I think it started when Buster was eyeballing his new toy...they got into a stare down, and eventually Trooper went over to Buster and gave him a chomp. Needless to say, I am not impressed with this behaviour. I have seen this look in Troopers eye several times before, and when he moves towards Buster I have always called him off. But not knowing what his intent was, I decided to see what he was going to do when he made it to Buster...and my intuition was correct about it not being good ;( On the flip side, he backed off quickly at my voice command, and it was clear that he understood that what he did was unacceptable behaviour - and went almost immediately into a submissive position.
