"You laugh because I tell you that you have a 'vocation to marriage?' Well, you have just that: a vocation.
"Commend yourself to the Archangel Raphael that he may keep you pure, as he did Tobias, until the end of the way."
_________
The experience to which he refers is the surprise and confusion which greeted his conversations and his preaching in the 1930s when he spoke about a "vocation to marriage." In this point of 'The Way,' the surprise is expressed in juvenile laughter: they thought St. Josemaría was joking.
In those days having a "vocation" was practically equated a "vocation to be a religious" or a "vocation to the priesthood." "To have a vocation" was – and in the mentality of many, still is – to enter a convent or a seminary. Normal people said (or thought) that they did not have a vocation.
St. Josemaría: "Let them see the noble path of Christian parenthood, and how much we need parents with a manly piety; and how it most certainly requires a special vocation to be a parent – an idea many of them have never heard of before – and how they seem destined by God for that calling, if they struggle, and ennoble their lifestyle with that struggle..."
