In this image film stills of the inside of a piano are combined with waveforms in an attempt to capture a visual representation of musical rhythms. This image relates to the work of experimental filmmaker Oskar Fischinger. In the 1930s Fischinger experimented with Ornament Sound, utilizing the optical sound track in a very unique way. He used graphical icons in place of the usual waveforms in the soundtrack area of the film, to create a "synthesized," or "pure" sound. His work raised questions about what sounds shapes might create.
