This is my Bachelor Degree thesis book. The project I developed is a “visual book”, based on Juan Rulfo’s novel “Pedro Páramo”. A “visual book” is a graphic artefact that offers the reader an immediate key of interpretation of the text and allows him to comprehend the real meaning getting possession of the contents, without altering or twisting the features of the book as the author intended it.
Following the initial stage of research and selection of the concept I was going to base my work on, I set the aim of designing, through alterations both “micro-typographic” (parts of a letter, a whole letter or word...) and “macro-typographic” (page, book, binding, cover...), a new structure of meaning that should have enpowered the partial emptiness of the narrative and Rulfo's silence in the book. The resulting effect is an amplification of the disorientation that the book generates in the reader. I established a similarity between the narrative system and the book as an object, with all its components such as binding, cover, pages, sentences, words, parts of words.
There are some folding pages that can be opened through a kind of “wing”. The action of opening the folded page symbolizes a metaphor of desire of knowledge, of discovery, the same feelings that brought the main character, Juan Preciado, to undertake the trip to Comala looking for his father. Inside the folded pages, you can find either a blank space, again symbol of Rulfo's silence, or a sample of text that is the “echo” of the previous page, represented through a micro-typographical removal or dissection (breakdown of text into words, of words into letters, of letters into fragments).
The cover is based on a grid of seventy modules that correspond to the seventy parts of the book: within them I placed the letters concerning title and author of the book, according to a pattern that indirectly anticipates the content of the book. I thought to apply the theme of randomness (already used during the project for the folded pages) to the cover, changing the place of the letters within the seventy modules: in this way I managed to have various front covers, similar in the structure but different in the disposition of the letters. For this purpose, I presupposed the use of Processing in order to develop a script that, basing its computation on precise rules, is able to arrange the letters in a "random" order.

You can ‘Leave Your Mark’ in whatever way you want, ranging from drawing, writing, sewing, adding photographs, markings, printing and sticking. How you make your marks is entirely up to you. All we ask is that you have fun with the different themes.
45 Visual Library Books have been placed in Portsmouth Central Library and each has its own theme ranging from; Portsmouth, My City, When I Open My Eyes, Whilst I Was Waiting, Love, What’s in My Pocket and Memories. The intention is for you to feel free to explore the Visual Library Books and choose a theme that you like.

General Description:
The two storey Czechoslovakia Pavilion consisted of two buildings linked by an entrance hall. A simple, clear architectural strategy provided a harmonious backdrop for the exhibition's exciting displays. The first building featured two levels of exhibition space with a central courtyard which drew some of the largest crowds at Expo. Czechoslovakian art, technology and industry were presented to visitors through an attractive mixture of light, sound and video. The Hall of Centuries exhibit showcased texts and artifacts from ancient royalty. In the Hall of Tradition, visitors could find old and new glass and crystal and learn about their manufacturing processes. The World of Children enchanted the pavilion's younger visitors featuring puppet shows performing traditional tales. The second building featured four restaurants; Le Bistro served light snacks; the Bratislava Inn was a wine tavern; the Castle Restaurant featured fine Czechoslovakian cuisine; and the Prague was home to the famous pilsener Urquell beer. Offices, a gift shop and a theatre could also be found in this second Czechoslovakian building.

The artwork ‘Life’ is designed to enable people to contemplate their own personal journeys and reflect upon life on today’s planet that occurs in a single 24-hour period. The viewer is taken from Sunrise to Sunset, journeying through the beauty of planet earth, witnessing the sun, the oceans, and the clouds.
The second artwork - at Carlisle Castle is created from the textures and forms, and colours of human creativity. Developed from collections at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford the work is a celebration of the beauty of human life.
The artwork enables contemplation on our human existence in the creation of our planet and our human impact upon it, reflecting ecology, extinction, and the beauty of the world around us. The sounds and textures of humanity, extinction and time is portrayed.
Sounds heard are musical pieces composed by David Harper who has used within his works recorded anthropological soundtracks from collections of the Pitt Rivers Museum. The artwork and visual imagery is created by Artist Peter Walker who has interpreted collections from the Natural History Museum Oxford and the William Morris Museum, depicting nature and artistically highlighting core issues in the subject of life on earth.
