McPolin Barn on McPolin Farm just inside the city limits of Park City Utah. The barn is celebrating its 100th anniversary, as it was put together by the McPolin family back in 1922. When the McPolin family erected the barn they fitted Timbers from old tailings mill without the use of nails. Now owned by Park City it is the most photographed barn in Utah, it welcomes visitors to Park City and is a focal point off of state route 224 of the valley exiting off of Interstate 80. My damsel and I need to make it a point to visit the barn on our next journey out.

Located just west of Salt Lake City in Magna Utah by the Great Salt Lake just off of I-80 is Kennecott Copper's Garfield Smelter smokestack the tallest free standing structure in Utah and in fact west of the Mississippi. Built in 1974 it stands 1,215 feet dwarfed from a distance by the 9,000 foot Oquirrh mountains that surrounds it but driving by the structure whose hexagonal base is an impressive 177 feet wide one realizes it scale is immense. The smelter that smokestack serves is one of the most efficient in the world capturing 99.9 of the sulphur gas released so it size is overkill but it was very expensive and costly to downsize. Besides it is used as a landmark for air, land and sea travel on the Great Salt Lake.

Update Nov 2009: I'll be getting on the road soon to head out for a workshop in Arches and Canyonlands National Parks Nov 11-14:
I can't wait!
We should be able to shoot the Northern Taurid meteor shower on Nov12.
Northern Taurids - Nov 12
"The NTA peak has only a waning crescent Moon, however. With near-ecliptic radiants, all meteoricists can observe these streams, albeit northern hemisphere observers are somewhat better-placed, as here suitable radiant zenith distances persist for much of the night, though from the southern hemisphere, a good 3-5 hours' watching around local midnight is possible with Taurus well above the horizon."

To go from the shining white granite of Yosemite and the Eastern Sierra to the glowing red rocks of Utah is a bit of a culture shock, but one that I was really looking forward to on this trip. Finally got to visit @cedarbreaksnps and loved every second- especially the fact that Bristlecone Pines are growing along the rim of the amphitheater, putting two of my favorite elements of two of my favorite national parks in conversation with each other- the hoodoos of Bryce and the Bristlecones of Great Basin. Cedar Breaks is a gem.

Evening storms rolled through Big Cottonwood Canyon, draping Storm Mountain in heavy clouds. Just as the day seemed ready to fade to gray, the sky opened. I watched as the last light of sunset poured in, igniting the clouds with deep purple, orange, and soft blues. The rugged quartzite walls glowed, the air felt fresh and cool, and for a few minutes, the whole canyon felt caught between the storm and the calm, painted in nature’s own colors.

Monument Valley isn’t just the iconic landscape of the American Southwest across history and pop culture, it is still a living and breathing and active community within the Navajo Nation- Tsé Bii’ Ndzisgaii, or Valley of Rocks.Traveling through this region is not akin to traveling through a National Park- you are often very close to homes and the patterns of everyday life in the Navajo Nation. Mindfulness of the privilege of being here is the way to go.
Across Utah and Arizona, you are in the Navajo Nation. In Navajo, sacred land is referred to as Diné Bikéyah. This land belongs to the people. Hopitutskwa, Pueblos, and Núu-agha-tʉvʉ-pʉ̱ (Ute) land is also found across these two states and at archeological sites. It is an honor to see them.
The historic Santa Clara Relief Society House is located on the historic Hug-Gluber property in Santa Clara in Washington County Utah. The Victorian Eclectic structure is the oldest remaining Latter Day Saint church building of the Santa Clara pioneer community. Used until 1949 by the LDS’s Relief Society which is akin to women’s auxiliary organization of the Mormon church. It also served as a schoolhouse (1908-13), the village’s makeshift clinic (1938-1950) and served as the local post office (1953-1963). Restored although damaged by an earthquake in 1992 after a local grass roots effort to prevent that was successful, it is now a museum of the Relief Society and LDS pioneer artifacts. One of the largest United States of America Flags ever flown hung in a 600-foot canyon in Snow Canyon State Park in St George Utah as it is every year in November in honor of Veteran’s Day. The flag measures 150 feet by 78 feet, an astounding 11,700 square foot area. I've had the pleasure of hiking the Narrows several times; I've also seen countless amazing shots of the reflected light casting its trademark warm glow on the canyon's distant walls. However, I don't recall ever seeing a scene like this one (whether live or in a photo). I was lucky enough to stumble upon this particular light show while hiking out of the Narrows during a November 2019 trip with Kevin Benedict and Sky Matthews.
While I cannot honestly say that this is the best of compositions, I can say that it is probably the best I could manage in my photogasmic panic that ensued once I stopped starring, closed my jaw and realized that I probably only had a few minutes at most to unpack my gear (which I had of course packed up thinking that I was done for the day) and set up before the lightshow disappeared for good.
All in all, I'm fairly happy that I was even able to fire off a few shots and get something in focus and usable. I cannot wait to see what surprises will be revealed the next time I have the opportunity to hike one of my all time favorite places.
I hope you enjoy the picture and as always, thanks for the time to look!

Traveling through a slot canyon is an exercise in light and texture. Most times, the light is muted and soft and ethereal, causing the whole environment to glow and be uniform. But other moments, where the walls either recede or extend in dramatic fashion, bend the light and throw perspective into sharp relief. That’s what you’re seeing here. Peekaboo Canyon is a delight.

Afternoon heat stirs the air, and by late day the sky starts to build. Towering clouds rise over the horizon, stacking higher and darker until they burst into summer’s show; rolling thunder, flickers of lightning, and the scent of rain on dry ground. By evening, the storm drifts on, leaving behind a washed sky and glowing light.
This was my first ever visit to Dead Horse Point State Park near Moab, UT and we had the whole place to ourselves! This is an awe-inspiring viewpoint of the Colorado River and the towering cliffs that rise above it. It was such a great morning of photography, and followed up by a trip to the Love Muffin Cafe in Moab.
