Gare do Oriente, Lisbon

"Estação Oriente is one of the most notable symbols of Parque das Nações. Even if you don’t arrive by train, this work of architecture is a must-see while in Lisbon. Created by the architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava, the elevated station has an impressive glass roof and an access tunnel that allows you to take unique photographs. It is one of Lisbon’s main links to the rest of the country, as well as the city within a city that was erected after the World Oceans Expo and gave the Tagus a new lease of life." www.visitlisboa.com/see-do/heritage-culture/only-lisbon/o...

"The building, designed by the architect Charles Correa, seeks to raise architecture to the level of sculpture, sculpture to the level of beauty and beauty to the level of therapy – in order to honour the centre’s work." (www.visitlisboa.com/en/places/champalimaud-centre-for-the...)

Lisboa – Pavilhão Português

(Expo 1998), by Siza Vieira & Souto de Moura.

=> Picture of the whole pavilion.

The Portuguese pavilion was designed as an exhibition hall for the country of Portugal for the Expo 1998. For this behave the waterfront was completely renovated.

It represents a sheet of paper lying on two bricks. The enormous, 1400-ton prestressed suspended roof is considered a masterpiece of construction technology and has won international awards.

The above detail shows the connection of the thin concrete ceiling to the wall with a row of steel wires and bolts (south side).

July 10, 2023 - Torre de Belém (Belém Tower) "The Belém Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Lisbon’s most striking monuments and the icon of a country historically moulded by its proximity to the ocean and its maritime discoveries of new worlds.

Discoveries by Portuguese navigators transformed Lisbon into the world’s main trade hub in the 15th and 16th centuries.

To protect the city, King João II conceived a pioneer project to defend Lisbon from enemy ships, a work completed in 1514 and which included the building of the Belém Tower, designed by architect Francisco de Arruda.

The tower’s unique design includes a modern and heavily armed bastion, protruding over the river.

King Manuel I clearly wished the Belém Tower to stand as a lasting symbol of his powerful reign by depicting the royal coat of arms, the armillary sphere and the cross of the Order of Christ." Previous description: www.visitlisboa.com/en/places/torre-de-belem

But the biggest history lesson we can learn from this triumphal Arch is clearly visible in the inscription, in Latin, on its pediment: 'The Virtues of the Greatest, that they may be a lesson to all, mark for eternity the grandeur of the Portuguese soul and its achievements throughout the ages'." - from VisitLisboa.com, "Rua August Arch, Lisboa's triumph" (select language at the top of the page)
