Finally, after what seems like a year without a break (ok it was about 2 months) me and Elena finally got some "Us time" and decided to hire a car for the first time ever!

I only passed my driving test 6 months ago, and haven't driven since then, so we really should have taken it easy, but we decided to head out of London to the West Country, trying to get deep into Devon and Cornwall.

As we only had 4 days and a hire car, we couldn't push too far, but our first stop was Bath, a beautiful little city in Somerset.

The most famous thing about Bath is the Roman baths, after which the city takes it's name. Legend has it that these were founded by Prince Bladud, son of King Lear, the dude that Shakespeare wrote about. He came back from Greece with leprosy and, after seeing some pigs bathing in hot mud and realising that they had no skin conditions, he decided to bath in the stuff himself and was cured of leprosy. He then went on to set up the city of Bath and had the baths of Aquae Sulis at the centre of it all.

For me as a paraglider, the legend of Bladud has a more interesting side. Apparently a fan of necromancy, Bladud also constructed a pair of wings for himself and tried to fly from London to Greece.

He didn't get that far, as he hit a REAL wall and fell and broke his neck.

So, in tribute to Bladud, whose likeness you can see, just behind Richard Canard's postcard, here's today's REAL wall over the historic Roman baths at Bath.

www.visitbath.co.uk says :

Around Britain's only hot spring, the Romans built a magnificent temple and bathing complex that still flows with natural hot water. See the water's source and walk where Romans walked on the ancient stone pavements around the steaming pool. The extensive ruins and treasures from the spring are beautifully preserved and presented using the best of modern interpretation.

Sally Lunn's is the oldest house in Bath (c.1482) and serves the most famous local delicacy; the Original Sally Lunn Bun. Sally Lunn, a French refugee, arrived 1680 and established her bakery. Today Sally Lunn's serve a menu based on the world famous Sally Lunn Bun during the day and are open for fine English food in the evening. Museum open daily, showing the original kitchen she used.

The city may be well known for relaxing spa breaks, but there are plenty of other exciting things to do in Bath too.

Shop until you drop at the city’s vibrant mixture of independent and established high street retailers; get the adrenaline pumping with a driving experience, horse racing or rugby match or learn to bake, cook or sew at a creative workshop.

If the outdoors is your kind of thing, you can always explore the countryside on a leisurely (or more challenging!) walk or cycle route; soak up the city’s historic atmosphere and beautiful architecture with a sightseeing tour; or make friends with the cheeky monkeys on safari at Longleat.

Whether you’re visiting to enjoy some time on your own, with the family for a fun day out or as a couple looking for a romantic escape, there’s such as wide range of different activities to choose from in Bath you’ll wish you could stay for longer!

Sheltering in a passage from the heavy rain, we noticed this attractive place, where we returned later for lunch.

Pulteney Bridge, together with the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, is one of the world's most beautiful bridges. Like the Ponte Vecchio it is one of a handful of historic bridges in the world with shops built into it.

Built for William Pulteney by Robert Adam, the bridge was an attempt to connect central Bath to land on the other bank of the River Avon and make Pulteney's fortune. In spite of its practical origins it is surely the most romantic bridge in the world, best viewed from Parade Gardens park by the crescent weir.

If you saw the movie "Les Miserables" then you saw this bridge. It's the location for Javert's suicide scene but it's in Bath Somerset not Paris France!!
