The Hanging Gardens of Marqueyssac (Périgord-France, overlooking the Dordogne-valley) are listed as a National Historical monument and offer more than 6 kilometers of shaded paths, adged withh 150 000 hand-pruned boxwoods aged over hundred years.

Die unglaubliche Geschichte von Marqueyssac ist zunächst einmal die eines Mannes namens Julien de Cerval, der auf seinem Anwesen in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jh. tausende und abertausende Buchsbäume pflanzen ließ.

Sie ist außerdem die Geschichte eines ambitionierten Projekts: Mitte der 90er Jahre des vergangenen Jahrhunderts kaufte Kléber Rossillon das 22 ha große Anwesen, um es 1997 der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen. Heute ist Marqueyssac der meistbesuchte Park des Périgord.

Marqueyssac ist ein Garten mit tausend Facetten. Die 150.000 hundertjährigen Buchsbäume werden von Hand zu weichen, fließend ineinander übergehenden und ebenso erstaunlichen wie eleganten Formen geschnitten. 6 km lang sind die mal gewundenen, mal wie mit dem Lineal gezogenen Wege durch den Park. Im Süden führt eine Promenade oberhalb des Felshangs, an dem Goldregen, Zypressen und Schirmpinien für Mittelmeer-Flair sorgen, zum 130 m hoch über dem Fluss gelegenen Belvedere, der eine herrliche Aussicht auf das Tal der Dordogne bietet.

Man kann auch den „Höhenweg“ einschlagen, auf dem man Hütten aus Trockenmauerwerk, kleinen Bächen und einem Wasserfall begegnet, sowie natürlich Steineichen, den Wahrzeichen des Perigords, die in diesem Teil des Parks allgegenwärtig sind.
