Using a cameraphone to view negatives ...

I've been meaning to write this trick up as a mini tutorial, but for now this little example will have to do.

Occassionally I'll be looking at a negative and want to get a quick feel for what it looks like. In the case of the image here, it was brought in by a visitor to the Who Do You Think You Are? Live show where I was working dating old photographs.

The trick is simple: on your cameraphone (or on most 'point and shoot' digital cameras) put the camera in 'negative' mode. This is often found in the 'options' or 'effects' menu. You'll see that the hand and all background objects (including the white sheet of paper it is being viewed against) now look odd, but the image itself is good enough for viewing.

A view over the Mojave from the North View Trail in Joshua Tree National Park.

The campground is located in a nice stand of trees just behind this view. The old road has not been in use for many years but makes an excellent trail. There are many trails to take in any direction from this spot. Tombstone Lakes, Rae Lake and more if you are really adventurous.

"Windows" is the subject of one of my friend's travelling art journal. Wasn't easy to make a page about it, and nothing was coming to my mind for few long weeks until I saw one of the most amazing views ever. But now I also know that it's not only about the view, but also about the person who's standing next to me.

More pictures and a little bit more about technique on my blog:

This is the view on the Gulf of Finland from my student halls balcony :) I took this shot about 14, after 15 the snow started to fall :)

Another from my trip to St. Michael's, Maryland. This was the pier at the house that we stayed at for the trip. The view we had was one of the reasons I fell in love with the area. The weather was perfect for our trip, not too humid. I just relaxed on the pier for hours enjoying the view.

Check out the pier on BLACK!
