Every night (and morning) the military installation in Nyholm fires a cannon from Sixtus Battery. The morning cannon is at 8am to raise the flag, and the evening cannon is at sunset (around 9:20 these days) to lower the flag. We have the perfect view from the houseboat we are watching as it is just accross the canal from the cannons.
There is a certain inevitability that if people with mobile phones find themselves in a room full of projected selfies, they will take selfies of themselves against this background. In fact, these aren't selfie photos as such, but thousands of video diaries downloaded from the internet and projected as a cacophony of vloggers trying to be heard.

The phone rang a few minutes ago and I didn't answer it because it was an unknown number. I was sitting at my desk and Nano was sitting in his crate. When the phone rang, he went over to Stuart' office chair and jumped in it, and did THIS as the answering machine played my voice.
So you know of course I immediately recreated it for y'all.

My first place to live in Manhattan was a small room that I rented from a woman in Washington Heights on 181st street and Wadsworth. As part of my $120/week rent, she hand washed my clothes and cleaned my room.
The apartment building was primarily populated with Dominican families. I lived with Flore from August - December '05. At one point we were sharing that tiny apartment with her two sons and another renter. One night the roof of the bathroom caved in. For a few days we were forced to use a bucket. At that point I knew it was time to leave.

Looking at Plaza Independecia from our apartment at night. You can hear the drums of a carnaval group practicing a few blocks away. We listen to them every night.

The weather here in Montevideo is pretty amazingly beautiful. Every so often we get a storm though, and they can be humdingers! This video is looking out toward the bay but you can't even see that a bay exists there.

Day three of my self-enforced captivity. Today I let myself play in the garden for a few minutes, but no shoes yet. Cracks are beginning to show - at one stage I nearly made a break for the Fat Cat.
This morning, I actually managed a shower without getting my feet wet. I am ridiculously pleased with myself.
