why he didn't just pull the truck in front of the house instead of rolling this halfway down the block, i have no idea. maybe it's more fun this way.
This is a small video-diary from the time we had at ARS ELECTRONICA 2008. We had to speed it up cause we did so much.

“It is the obvious which is so difficult to see most of the time. People say 'It's as plain as the nose on your face.' But how much of the nose on your face can you see, unless someone holds a mirror up to you?”

I had dinner at KRAPOW! in Poblacion, Makati, Philippines, a couple of nights ago.
It's a narrow little street food style diner that serves super cheap Thai food.
I took all the still images and video clips with my 7artisans 12mm ultrawide and 25mm manual focus lenses so I could practice using manual focus lenses to shoot video footage.
After dinner, I walked around Poblacion and Rockwell for a bit taking photos with my 7artisans 25mm f/1.8 and 55mm f/1.4 lens.
Poblacion, Makati, is one of my favorite neighborhoods to photograph, especially at night.

Night Photgraphy in Poblacion, Makati, 3 Consecutive Saturday Nights
I went to Poblacion, Makati, Metro Manila, Philippines for three Saturdays in a row (March 19, 26, and April 2, 2022) to practice using my 7artisans manual focus lens (the 25mm f/1.8 and the 12mm f/2.8) at night.
Not every photo is a success, many are out of focus. That's why I practice. It's also trickier to use manual focus lenses in dim light.

I had an art filled week the final week of March 2022. On March 26, 2022, I went to Art Fair PH. This year's art fair was scattered over many galleries and venues. I chose to visit this open air venue in Ayala Triangle park, Makati, Metro Manila, Philippines.
A few days later, on March 31, 2022, I went to the Areté Ateneo Art Gallery in Diliman, Quezon City, with my friends.
After our gallery visit, we walked around the Ateneo De Manila University campus for a bit.
I used my early March 2022-acquired manual focus 7artisans manual lenses to take the photos in this slideshow. (25mm f/1.8, 12mm f/2.8).
Not everything turned out in focus, that's why I practice. I chose to concentrate on practicing shooting stills with the 7artisans manual focus lenses instead of dividing my attention and also taking video footage.

*Reconstructing events as drama*
Touching the Void is a reconstruction of the ill-fated climbing of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes by two men. One of them nearly dies but makes it back to base camp while his fellow climber thinks he has already died.
For the film, 70 Donkeys, carrying 6 tons of kit, 7 climbers, a film crew of 6, 12 Peruvian support staff and Joe and Simon themselves returned to the mountain. All landscapes and wide-shots were taken in Peru, all close-ups in the Alps with actors. This goes beyond re-enactment in the original sense because actors do part of the acting and new locations are used. Still the film is aimed at recreating a certain experience.
The film is made after the book of one of the climbers, Joe Simpson. In the bonus documentary on the making of the film, Joe Simpson says he thinks no one in the crew has the slightest idea of what he went through, of the experience they are trying to recreate with the film. He describes his experience himself as dying, as losing everything he was and wanted to be, and then it was given back to him. He wonders if any of the crew know how bad that is. After seeing the film however, he says it accurately reflects what he went through being alone on the mountain. He is fact surprised by what the film manages to bring across. In his video dairy Joe Simpson tells how uninterested he is at the beginning of the filming in Peru. The whole situation seems unreal and artificial to him, with the satellite phones, a generator to provide electric light and a film crew of art least thirty people on the spot where he almost died.
Simpson’s comments show how big the gap between reality and the reconstruction of reality can be. The filmmakers here did take a big detour to get to the original experience. The film crew is totally setup as for a fiction film, complete with actors and location scouting. The story is based on true events, and reflects these events well according to the person that has gone through them, but at the same time it uses all the Hollywood tricks to create drama. Something like this can only be made with super large budgets and equipment that gives the director total control over his scenes, directing them from first to last second. The only observational shots we get are from the mountains. The landscape and the weather cannot be directed.
This film shows that a full-blown professional film crew does not necessarily prevent the original experience from being recreated. The costs are enormous and not feasible for design research probably, but the results can be impressive and useful for design because these films work with scripting techniques that let the audience identify with the characters in the film in a way that makes a viewer feel as if s/he has gone through the experience her/himself.
It is not totally impossible to use professional feature film crews for design research. Designer Noam Toran uses professional film crews to make very short films of about one minute. Keeping the films short he does not need a very large budget.
