On the reverse Margery has written:
"This is Sam, Gertrude - my mother & my grandmother. I want this back one day". The c1910 is my addition, based on what I had been told but it's wrong - I now (2019) found Sam(uel) was born 23 Feb 1921.
Gertrude was Margery's eldest sister (b. 1884 B'ham), Sam is Gertrude's son. Sarah Coleman (b. 1862, Birmingham) is Gertrude and Margery's mother and Hannah Jacobs nee Goodman is their grandmother (born Dec 1839, Leeds and apparently referred to as 'Annie'. I believe she died in 1929.
Hannah and her sister Matilda (b. c 1845 B'ham) were apparently left as orphans in Cheltenham. Their father was Abraham Goodman. Their mother, Sarah Goodman, came from Amsterdam and was buried in the Jewish Burial ground Cheltenham aged 39 in 1854. The gravestone is marked as being erected by the two girls, who would have been about 9 and 14 (very approximately), suggesting that Abraham pre-deceased Sarah.
I never returned the photo to my grandmother and it's too late now.
One more play with this one. I created 3 different versions in Aperture then did some work with HDR. Got some depth and now light on the foreground.
